The Door Beneath the Mansion / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Trust

The photograph was old.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded.

But the people in it were clear.

My father.

James Whitmore.

And beside him…

Michael.

They were standing outside the family company building.

Both smiling.

Both looking younger.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was what they were holding.

A folder.

The same kind of folder Michael brought into the mansion.

The same kind of folder that started this entire nightmare.

I looked at Arthur.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

“Arthur.””

He took a breath.

“I haven’t seen that photograph in years.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at me.

“You’re right.””

Then he sat down.

“Your father and Michael were close.””

I frowned.

“Close?””

“Yes.””

“But you said Michael was reckless.””

“He was.””

“Then why was my father working with him?””

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“Because your father believed Michael could change.””

I stared at him.

“So everyone knew Michael except me?””

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

My voice rose.

“I knew my father through stories. I knew him through memories you chose to share.””

Arthur stayed quiet.

“And now I find out he was investigating something with a man who just tried to destroy our family?””

Arthur looked down.

“I never wanted this life for you.””

“But it’s my life.””

That was the truth.

Whether he wanted it or not.

Whether anyone wanted it or not.

I was standing in the middle of it.

Maria came closer.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“You knew too?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“A little.””

I laughed softly.

“Everybody knew.””

“No,” Maria said.

“Not everybody.””

Her voice was gentle.

“But the people who were trying to protect you did.””

I shook my head.

“Protect me.””

The phrase felt different now.

Like a door that had been locked for years.

Everyone kept telling me they were protecting me.

But nobody asked if I wanted to live in the dark.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Vanessa.

She stood at the doorway.

Her face looked different.

No makeup could hide exhaustion.

No expensive dress could hide fear.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“I need to tell you something.””

Arthur immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I can’t keep doing this.””

I stared.

“Doing what?””

“Lying.””

The word surprised me.

Because coming from her, it almost sounded impossible.

She entered the room slowly.

“I didn’t marry you because of your money.””

I didn’t react.

“Not at first.””

There it was.

The sentence I never wanted to hear.

She looked down.

“Michael contacted me before I met you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“He knew you were alone after your first wife passed.””

My jaw tightened.

“He chose me.””

Silence.

“He studied your life.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He knew what kind of woman you would trust.””

“And you agreed?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

“Why?””

She wiped her face.

“Because I thought I could control the situation.””

I stared at her.

“You thought you could use him.””

She nodded.

“I thought I could take what I needed and walk away.””

“And Lily?””

Her expression broke.

“I never wanted her involved.””

“But she was.””

“I know.””

The room went silent.

For the first time, Vanessa looked truly ashamed.

Not caught.

Ashamed.

“I was supposed to get the documents,” she said.

“What documents?””

“The original family trust records.””

Arthur’s face changed.

“You were searching for those?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Michael said they proved your father changed the inheritance.””

I looked at Arthur.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“Your father left something for you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Something Arthur never gave you.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

And suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t just about money.

It wasn’t even about power.

It was about something my father left behind.

Something hidden.

Something everyone had been fighting over.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Maria moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

Because a voice came from the foyer.

Michael.

“You finally found out.””

I stepped into the hallway.

He was standing below.

Looking up at me.

“You knew,” I said.

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“About my father?””

“Yes.””

“About what he left?””

His expression changed.

“More than anyone.””

I walked down the stairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

“What did my father leave me?””

Michael looked at Arthur.

Then back at me.

May you like

“The truth.””

And before I could answer, the lights in the mansion went out.
