Chapter 5: The Man Who Wanted Everything
Michael Voss walked into the mansion like he owned it.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not his expensive coat.
Not the confidence in his eyes.
Not even the way Arthur’s expression hardened the second he saw him.
It was the way Michael moved.
Like he wasn’t entering someone else’s home.
Like he was returning to something that had always belonged to him.
I stepped farther in front of the staircase.
A small movement.
But Michael noticed.
His eyes dropped briefly toward where Lily had gone.
Then back to me.
“You’re protective,” he said.
I didn’t answer.
“Good,” he continued.
“A father should be.””
The words sounded respectful.
But something about them felt wrong.
Like a compliment from someone holding a knife behind his back.
Arthur walked forward.
“You have no right to be here.””
Michael smiled.
“You always did know how to make people feel welcome.””
“This is my house.””
“No.””
Michael looked around.
“This is the family house.””
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“Leave.””
Michael laughed softly.
“After all these years, that’s all you have to say?””
“You broke into my family’s life.””
Michael tilted his head.
“Your family?””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“Interesting choice of words.””
Vanessa looked away.
I watched her carefully.
A few hours earlier, I thought she was the villain of this entire nightmare.
Now I wasn’t sure anymore.
She had done terrible things.
There was no excuse for what happened to Lily.
But the fear on her face when Michael arrived wasn’t the fear of someone seeing their partner.
It was the fear of someone who knew exactly what that person was capable of.
“You used her,” I said.
Michael looked at me.
“Excuse me?””
“You used Vanessa to get inside this family.””
He smiled.
“You say that like she had no choice.””
Vanessa flinched.
“Michael.””
He ignored her.
“People always want to pretend they were forced into their decisions.””
His eyes returned to me.
“But everyone makes choices.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“You’re talking about choices after your sister locked my daughter in a cellar?””
Michael’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A moment of irritation.
Not guilt.
I stepped closer.
“That’s what bothers you, isn’t it?””
He stared at me.
“You don’t care about what happened to Lily.””
Silence.
Then Michael smiled again.
“You’re emotional.””
I almost laughed.
“Yeah. I’m emotional about my child.””
“That’s your weakness.””
Arthur interrupted.
“Enough.””
Michael looked at him.
“You still think you’re in control.””
“I am.””
“No.””
Michael walked toward the center of the room.
“You’re not.””
He looked around at the guests who were still standing there.
“At some point, every powerful family learns the same lesson.””
Nobody spoke.
“Money doesn’t protect you.””
Michael looked directly at Arthur.
“Blood doesn’t protect you.””
Then he looked at me.
“And trust definitely doesn’t protect you.””
I wanted to hit him.
Not because of pride.
Not because he insulted me.
Because he looked at my family like we were a puzzle he had solved.
Like our pain was just part of his plan.
Arthur stepped closer.
“You’re angry because you believe you were denied something.””
Michael’s smile faded.
“Was I?””
The question surprised everyone.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“You know why.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice became sharper.
“I know the story you told everyone.””
The room went quiet.
“You told them I was reckless. You told them I wasn’t responsible. You told them I couldn’t handle power.””
Arthur said nothing.
“Maybe I couldn’t,” Michael continued.
His voice lowered.
“But you never gave me a chance.””
I looked at Arthur.
For the first time that night, I wondered if there was a part of this story nobody knew.
Arthur had always been a strong man.
A provider.
A protector.
But strong people could make mistakes too.
“I made mistakes,” Arthur finally said.
Michael laughed.
“That's all?””
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
Arthur looked at him.
“The truth is that you were given opportunities. You wasted them.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“And there it is.””
He shook his head.
“You still don’t see it.””
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
I moved instantly.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a folder.
A simple folder.
He placed it on the table.
“What is that?”” Arthur asked.
“Proof.””
Nobody moved.
Michael opened the folder.
“No papers. No dramatic reveal.””
He looked at me.
“Just facts.””
I hated how calm he was.
“What facts?””
“That Vanessa wasn’t the only person who had access to this family.””
Arthur stared.
“What are you saying?””
Michael looked at him.
“I’m saying someone else inside this house has been helping you.””
My stomach tightened.
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael smiled.
“Now the question is…”
May you like
He looked around the room.
“Who?””
