Chapter 6: The Hidden Hand
Nobody trusted anybody after that.
That was the thing about betrayal.
The person who causes the damage leaves, but the suspicion stays behind.
Every face starts looking different.
Every conversation sounds like a lie waiting to be discovered.
And standing in that foyer, surrounded by people I had known for years, I realized Michael had created exactly what he wanted.
Division.
“Don’t listen to him,” Arthur said.
Michael smiled.
“You always say that when you’re afraid.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“I’m not afraid of you.””
“No.””
Michael looked around.
“You’re afraid of what I know.””
I hated that part of me believed him.
Not because Michael was trustworthy.
He wasn’t.
But because there was something he understood about my family that I didn’t.
Secrets.
Everyone in that mansion had them.
The question was how deep they went.
Maria returned from upstairs.
She stood beside me.
“Lily is resting.””
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
She looked at Michael.
Her expression immediately changed.
“You.””
Michael looked at her.
“Hello, Maria.””
My eyes moved between them.
“You know him?””
Maria hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“How?””
She looked down.
“Years ago.””
Arthur turned.
“Maria.””
She looked at him.
“I think Daniel deserves the truth.””
The room became silent.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What truth?””
Maria took a breath.
“Before I worked for your family, I worked for Arthur’s parents.””
I frowned.
“I didn’t know that.””
“Most people don’t.””
Michael leaned against the wall.
“Because grandfather likes keeping history buried.””
Arthur looked angry.
“Careful.””
Maria continued.
“I knew Michael when he was young.””
Michael smiled.
“Everyone knew me when I was young.””
Maria ignored him.
“He wasn’t always like this.””
Michael’s expression softened for half a second.
Then it disappeared.
“You remember.””
“Yes.””
“And you still think I’m the problem?””
Maria looked at him.
“I think you were hurt.””
Michael laughed.
“That’s a nice way to say broken.””
“No.””
Maria shook her head.
“It’s a way to say hurt.””
The room became quiet.
For the first time, Michael looked less like a villain and more like a person carrying years of anger.
But then he looked at Lily’s bedroom door.
And that feeling vanished.
Because hurt did not excuse cruelty.
“You used a child,” I said.
Michael looked at me.
“I didn’t touch her.””
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“But it proves I’m not the monster you want me to be.””
I stared at him.
“You brought your sister into this.””
“Yes.””
“You manipulated her.””
“Yes.””
“You scared my daughter.””
Michael looked away.
Only for a moment.
But I saw something.
Regret.
Then he covered it.
“I needed access.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“You’re done.””
Michael looked at him.
“Am I?””
He pointed toward the folder.
“Because I don’t think you understand what’s inside.””
Arthur opened it.
His eyes moved across the papers.
Then stopped.
A strange silence followed.
“What?”” I asked.
Arthur didn’t answer.
“Grandfather?””
Michael smiled.
“There it is.””
I moved closer.
“What did you find?””
Arthur slowly closed the folder.
“This isn’t possible.””
Michael laughed.
“Except it is.””
Arthur looked at him.
“Where did you get this?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It does.””
“No.””
Michael’s voice hardened.
“What matters is that someone has been moving money from the family trust for months.””
The room exploded with whispers.
I looked at Arthur.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
And that was answer enough.
My chest tightened.
“Arthur?””
Finally, he spoke.
“I was investigating.””
Michael nodded.
“Investigating.””
He looked around.
“Or covering it up?””
Arthur’s face turned cold.
“I protected this family.””
Michael stepped closer.
“No.””
His voice dropped.
“You protected the family name.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the kind of accusation that hurt.
Not because it was necessarily true.
Because everyone wondered if it could be.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Arthur.
Then the closed folder.
My entire life, I believed my family was built on honesty.
Now I wasn’t sure if I had been protected from secrets…
Or protected by them.
Michael picked up his coat.
“I didn’t come here tonight to destroy your family.””
I almost laughed.
“Then why are you here?””
He looked at me.
“To show you that your family was already falling apart.””
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“One more thing, Daniel.””
I didn’t answer.
Michael turned.
“Ask your grandfather why he never told you about your father.””
My heart stopped.
The room went silent.
Because there was one thing Michael knew that nobody else did.
A secret about me.
A secret I had spent my entire life believing didn’t exist.
May you like
And when I looked at Arthur’s face…
I knew Michael wasn’t lying.
