Chapter 10: The Man Who Came Back for the Truth

The snow outside the clubhouse fell harder.

Each flake disappeared against the black surface of the SUV parked beyond the gate.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone inside understood one thing.

The past had finally arrived.

Bear stood near the entrance, staring through the window.

His reflection stared back.

A man with gray in his beard.

A man who had spent decades becoming untouchable.

And somehow, a single night had brought him back to the same place he had been twenty-five years ago.

Waiting.

Only this time, he wasn’t waiting alone.

Behind him stood Elena.

Behind her stood Maya.

And between them stood every unanswered question he had carried for half his life.

Marcus walked toward the window.

“Bear.””

Bear didn’t turn.

“Is that him?””

Marcus looked outside.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it carried fear.

Bear finally looked at him.

“You’ve seen him before.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Recently?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Bear’s eyes hardened.

“You were still talking to him.””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I was trying to keep him away.””

Bear shook his head.

“That’s what everyone says.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone is always trying to protect me.””

His voice grew colder.

“But nobody ever asks what I want.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Bear.””

He turned.

The anger in his face softened slightly when he saw her.

Not because the pain was gone.

Because it never would be.

But because after twenty-five years, he still couldn’t look at her without remembering who he used to be.

“What did Vincent mean?”” Bear asked.

Elena knew exactly what he meant.

“The message.””

She nodded.

“He wants Maya.””

Bear’s expression changed.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Final.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“He’s not taking her.””

“I know.””

Bear looked at Maya.

The little girl stood quietly beside the Christmas tree, watching all of them.

She looked brave.

But she was still seven.

Bear walked over and knelt.

“Maya.””

She looked at him.

“Are you scared?””

She thought about it.

Then nodded.

“A little.””

Bear looked down.

“I am too.””

The honesty surprised her.

“Really?””

Bear nodded.

“Really.””

She looked at him.

“My mom said you were the strongest person she knew.””

Bear glanced at Elena.

Then back at Maya.

“Your mom was wrong about one thing.””

“What?””

“I’m not strong because I’m not afraid.””

He paused.

“I’m strong because I don’t let fear decide what I do.””

Maya stared at him.

Then slowly nodded.

Like she understood.

Like she had been waiting to hear those words.

A loud engine sound interrupted them.

The SUV outside turned off.

The door opened.

One person stepped out.

Bear stood.

The clubhouse went silent.

Vincent Cross walked through the snow alone.

No guards.

No weapons visible.

No hesitation.

That was what made him dangerous.

He moved like a man who believed nothing could touch him.

The front door opened.

Cold air rushed inside.

Vincent stepped into the clubhouse.

Older than Bear remembered.

But exactly the same in his eyes.

Calm.

Controlled.

Certain.

He looked around.

At the Christmas decorations.

The motorcycles.

The brothers.

Then finally at Elena.

A small smile appeared.

“You look older.””

Nobody reacted.

Elena stared at him.

“So do you.””

Vincent smiled.

“Time does that.””

Bear stepped between them.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re here.””

Vincent looked at him.

And for a moment, he looked almost impressed.

“You still think you’re the man in control.””

Bear didn’t blink.

“You’re standing in my home.””

Vincent looked around.

“No.””

He smiled slightly.

“This was never your home.””

The brothers immediately reacted.

Bear lifted one hand.

They stopped.

Vincent looked at Maya.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“There she is.””

Maya moved closer to Elena.

Bear noticed.

And his entire body tightened.

“You don’t look at her.””

Vincent looked back at Bear.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That she was never the problem.””

Bear frowned.

Vincent pointed slightly toward Maya.

“She is the reason everything happened.””

Elena’s voice became sharp.

“Don’t.””

Vincent ignored her.

“She carries something that belongs to me.””

Bear stepped forward.

“She’s a child.””

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And she’s also the last piece of evidence.””

The room went quiet.

Bear looked at Elena.

“What evidence?””

Elena didn’t answer.

Vincent smiled.

“She didn’t tell you.””

Bear’s expression changed.

Elena looked away.

Vincent continued.

“Of course she didn’t.””

Bear turned toward Elena.

“What is he talking about?””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Bear…”

The pain in her voice told him enough.

There was another secret.

Another piece.

He hated that feeling.

The feeling of standing in the middle of his own life and realizing everyone had been holding pages from his story.

Vincent stepped closer.

“Maya was born with information.””

Bear stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Vincent smiled.

“It will.””

He reached into his coat.

Every person in the room reacted.

But Vincent only pulled out a small old device.

A recording player.

He placed it on the table.

“Elena found this before she disappeared.””

Elena’s face went pale.

“No.””

Bear looked at her.

“You know what that is.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“What’s on it?””

Elena whispered:

“The reason Vincent was willing to destroy everything.””

Vincent looked at the device.

Then at Bear.

“Your answer is inside.””

Bear stared at it.

Vincent stepped back.

“Play it.””

Nobody moved.

Bear looked at him.

“Why?””

Vincent’s smile disappeared.

“Because after you hear it, you’ll understand why Elena could never come home.””

The room stayed silent.

Bear slowly reached toward the recording player.

His fingers touched the button.

And before he pressed it…

Elena whispered:

“Bear, don’t.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because the voice you’re about to hear…”

May you like

A pause.

“Is someone you love.””
