Chapter 8: The Room Nobody Mentioned
The clubhouse had never felt this small.
Bear stood across from Marcus.
The man who had been beside him for decades.
The man he trusted with his life.
The man who now seemed like a stranger.
“The second hospital room.””
Bear repeated the words.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like saying them too quickly would make the truth arrive faster.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“Bear…”
“No.””
Bear shook his head.
“You don’t get to start with my name.””
Marcus looked down.
Bear stepped closer.
“What happened in that room?””
Nobody spoke.
The bikers nearby stayed silent.
Even Daniel looked away.
Because he knew.
He knew something else was coming.
Maya stood beside the Christmas tree, holding onto the edge of her coat.
Bear noticed.
He walked over and placed himself between her and the adults.
Whatever happened next…
She didn’t need to carry it.
“Tell me,” Bear said.
Marcus finally looked up.
“There was another patient.””
Bear waited.
“Who?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Elena’s father.””
The answer confused him.
“What?””
“He was in the hospital that night.””
Bear frowned.
“I didn’t know that.””
“No.””
Marcus looked away.
“That was the point.””
Bear stared.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus sat down slowly.
His strength seemed to disappear.
“Your relationship with Elena was never accepted by everyone.””
Bear’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Bear already knew.
“Vincent.””
Marcus nodded.
“Vincent knew Elena was going to leave with you.””
“So?””
Marcus looked at him.
“So he knew she was taking something with her.””
Bear looked at Maya.
His heart tightened.
“Her.””
Marcus nodded.
“And the information she found.””
Bear felt anger rising.
“What information?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel spoke.
“Vincent had been using the hospital for illegal operations.””
Bear frowned.
“Illegal operations?””
Daniel nodded.
“Elena found records.””
“What records?””
“Records showing people were being moved. Hidden.””
Bear’s expression darkened.
“People?””
Daniel nodded.
“People Vincent wanted gone.””
The room became colder.
Bear looked at Maya.
A child.
A daughter he never knew existed.
A daughter who had spent her life carrying secrets meant for adults.
“Elena found out.””
Marcus continued.
“She wanted to expose him.””
“And Vincent stopped her.””
“Yes.””
Bear looked at Marcus.
“And you?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I tried to help.””
Bear laughed bitterly.
“Tried?””
Marcus looked broken.
“I got there too late.””
The words changed something.
Because for the first time, Bear saw the guilt.
Real guilt.
Not an excuse.
Not a lie.
Marcus had been carrying something too.
“What happened?””
Marcus stared at the floor.
“Elena escaped the first time.””
Bear froze.
“The first time?””
Marcus nodded.
“She made it out.””
“Then why didn’t she come to me?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because she wasn’t alone.””
Bear looked toward Maya.
His breath stopped.
“She had her.””
Marcus nodded.
“Elena was injured. Scared. And she knew Vincent would come after you if he found out about the baby.””
Bear’s voice broke.
“She protected me.””
Marcus nodded.
“She protected you.””
Bear turned away.
Twenty-five years.
He had thought Elena left because he wasn’t enough.
But she left because she loved him.
The realization hurt worse.
Because love had been the reason he lost her.
Maya quietly spoke.
“My mom said she wanted me to meet you.””
Bear looked back.
“When?””
“She said when I was old enough.””
Bear frowned.
“Old enough for what?””
Maya looked down.
“To know the truth.””
The clubhouse door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Wearing a long dark coat.
Snow covered her shoulders.
Nobody recognized her.
Except Daniel.
His face changed immediately.
“No…”
Bear noticed.
“Who is that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The woman stepped inside.
Her eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped on Bear.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“Bear.””
His entire body went still.
Because that voice…
That voice was impossible.
The woman looked at Maya.
Then back at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Bear couldn’t speak.
The woman took one step forward.
“I tried to come back.””
His heart stopped.
Because he knew.
He knew before she said it.
Before anyone confirmed it.
“Elena…”
The woman nodded.
May you like
And the entire world changed.
“I’m here.””
