Chapter 12: The Truth Elena Hid
The lights came back on.
But something had changed.
The clubhouse was no longer a safe place.
Not anymore.
The Christmas decorations still hung from the walls.
The tree still glowed.
The motorcycles still lined the windows.
But the warmth was gone.
Because everyone knew the same thing.
Vincent had come prepared.
Bear stood in front of Maya.
Nobody was getting past him.
Nobody.
Vincent watched him carefully.
“You really haven’t changed.””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
“Neither have you.””
Vincent smiled.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
He looked at Elena.
“Everyone changes.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Leave her out of this.””
Vincent’s expression softened.
Almost.
“You still protect her.””
Bear looked at Elena.
Protect her?
The words echoed.
There was so much he still didn’t know.
So much she had carried alone.
Vincent continued.
“That was always your weakness.””
Elena stared at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That was always your mistake.””
Vincent smiled.
“You think love makes people strong.””
A pause.
“It makes them predictable.””
Bear stepped forward.
“And fear makes you weak.””
Vincent looked amused.
“You always did like pretending you were different.””
Bear didn’t respond.
Because something else was bothering him.
The recording.
Maya.
The evidence.
The truth about her father.
He turned to Elena.
“Tell me.””
She looked at him.
“Tell you what?””
“The truth.””
Her face fell.
Bear’s voice softened.
But only slightly.
“No more secrets.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I know.””
She looked at Maya.
Then back at him.
“You deserve to know.””
Maya held Elena’s hand.
Elena took a breath.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified.””
Bear looked down.
“You didn’t tell me.””
“I tried.””
The words hurt.
“I called you.””
Bear froze.
“What?””
Elena nodded.
“The night before everything happened.””
Bear searched his memory.
The night before the hospital.
The night everything changed.
He remembered waiting.
He remembered the phone never ringing.
“I never got a call.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Elena looked at Vincent.
Because the answer was obvious.
Vincent smiled slightly.
“He intercepted it.””
Bear’s face changed.
“You?””
Vincent shrugged.
“It was necessary.””
Bear stepped forward.
But Elena stopped him.
“Wait.””
He looked at her.
She shook her head.
“Not yet.””
The words surprised him.
Because Elena was afraid.
But she was still choosing control.
She continued.
“I went to the hospital because I was having complications.””
Bear listened.
“I thought I would see you there.””
A tear moved down her cheek.
“I thought you would be holding my hand.””
Bear looked away.
The image hurt.
“Instead, I saw Vincent.””
Vincent remained silent.
“And Marcus.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Elena looked at him.
“I knew something was wrong.””
Marcus whispered:
“Elena…”
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice wasn’t angry.
Just tired.
“You need to hear this too.””
Marcus nodded.
Elena continued.
“They told me Bear had been hurt.””
Bear frowned.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“They told me your motorcycle crashed.””
Bear’s expression changed.
“That never happened.””
“I know.””
She looked at Vincent.
“They lied.””
Bear felt the anger returning.
“They made you think I was dead?””
Elena nodded.
“For a few hours.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
Elena looked at Maya.
“Because they needed me scared enough to leave.””
Bear understood.
They didn’t just separate them.
They broke their trust.
They created a world where neither person knew the other was fighting.
Elena continued.
“When I realized the truth, I tried to get back to you.””
“But you couldn’t.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
She looked at Maya.
“Because I had her.””
Bear looked at his daughter.
“And you chose her.””
Elena nodded.
“Every time.””
The answer hurt.
But he understood.
Because he would have chosen her too.
Vincent interrupted.
“And that’s why she failed.””
Everyone looked at him.
Vincent stepped forward.
“She thought hiding the evidence inside Maya would protect her.””
Elena’s face changed.
“But she didn’t know…”
Vincent smiled.
“She didn’t know what?””
The silence was terrifying.
Bear looked between them.
“What?””
Vincent looked at Maya.
“The evidence isn’t inside her.””
Bear frowned.
“Then where is it?””
Vincent smiled.
“It’s in her memory.””
Nobody spoke.
Bear stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Elena shook her head.
“No.””
Bear looked at her.
She whispered:
“Vincent used experimental memory techniques to hide information from witnesses.””
Daniel looked sick.
“That’s why the hospital records disappeared.””
Elena nodded.
“Maya was there when I hid the final proof.””
Bear looked at his daughter.
“She was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“How could she remember?””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Because she wasn’t supposed to remember.””
A pause.
“But something went wrong.””
Vincent smiled.
“Something went right.””
Bear’s expression darkened.
“What are you saying?””
Vincent looked at him.
“I’m saying Maya has been carrying the truth her entire life.””
Maya looked frightened.
Bear immediately turned toward Vincent.
“Enough.””
Vincent ignored him.
“The question is…”
He stepped closer.
“Who does she remember?””
Bear stared.
“What?””
Vincent smiled.
“Because the person who was with Elena that night…”
A pause.
“Was not me.””
The room went silent.
Bear looked at Elena.
Her face changed.
Because she knew what was coming.
Vincent finished:
“It was someone Bear trusts more than anyone.””
Everyone slowly turned.
Toward Marcus.
Marcus looked horrified.
And Bear realized…
May you like
The biggest secret wasn’t who took Elena.
It was who was standing beside her when she disappeared.
