Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The stranger’s words hung in the air.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Bear stared at him.

The Christmas lights reflected in his eyes, but there was no warmth left.

Only questions.

Only anger.

Only twenty-five years of unanswered pain.

“Come inside,” Bear said.

The man hesitated.

“Bear…”

“Come inside.””

The command was calm.

That made it more frightening.

The stranger stepped through the doorway.

Several bikers immediately moved closer, watching him.

Bear noticed.

“Everyone stays back.””

The brothers stopped.

They trusted Bear.

Even when they didn’t understand.

The stranger removed his coat.

He looked older than Bear expected.

Late sixties maybe.

Tired eyes.

A face that looked like it had spent years avoiding mirrors.

“My name is Daniel.””

Bear didn’t blink.

“Daniel what?””

“Reed.””

Marcus suddenly reacted.

A small movement.

But Bear saw it.

And that was enough.

Bear turned.

“You know him.””

Marcus looked away.

“Bear…”

“You know him.””

Marcus said nothing.

Bear looked back at Daniel.

“Why does he know you?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because I was there.””

The room became colder.

Bear stepped closer.

“At the hospital?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Bear’s jaw tightened.

“Then you know what happened.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

Then at the drawing.

“Yes.””

Bear’s voice became dangerous.

“Talk.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Not because he was afraid of Bear.

Because he was afraid of the memory.

“That night, Elena wasn’t leaving the hospital alone.””

Bear frowned.

“What?””

“She was going to meet you.””

The words struck him.

Bear looked down.

All these years, he had believed he was waiting outside for someone who had decided not to come.

But she had been coming.

She had been trying.

“She called me,” Daniel continued.

Bear looked up.

“Who are you?””

“I worked there.””

“At the hospital?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was security.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“You never told him everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I tried.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Bear turned toward Marcus.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I stopped him.””

The confession landed hard.

Bear stared.

“You stopped him?””

Marcus nodded.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Of what would happen if Bear knew.””

Bear’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you?””

Marcus had no answer.

Daniel looked between them.

“There was someone powerful involved.””

Bear laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the room.

“Someone powerful. Someone dangerous. Someone I shouldn’t know about.””

His eyes locked on Daniel.

“Say the name.””

Daniel stayed silent.

Bear stepped closer.

“Say it.””

Daniel whispered:

“Vincent Cross.””

The name meant nothing to most people.

But Marcus reacted instantly.

Bear noticed.

“Who is Vincent Cross?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Bear looked at him.

“Marcus.””

Marcus slowly sat down.

The strongest man in the room suddenly looked defeated.

“Vincent was different.””

Bear frowned.

“Different how?””

Marcus looked at the Christmas tree.

“He didn’t threaten people.””

A pause.

“He made them disappear.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel continued.

“Elena discovered something she wasn’t supposed to know.””

Bear’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

The little girl held onto Bear’s vest.

“She found evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Something Vincent had been hiding for years.””

Bear felt his stomach tighten.

“And Elena was going to tell me?””

Daniel nodded.

“She believed you could protect her.””

The words hurt.

Because Bear had spent years believing he failed her.

Now he was hearing that she had trusted him.

“I was outside that hospital,” Bear whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Waiting.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she come out?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she tried.””

Bear stopped.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She reached the exit.””

A pause.

“Then Vincent’s people found her.””

Maya covered her mouth.

Bear felt rage rising.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I can’t tell you everything.””

Bear’s eyes turned cold.

“Why?””

“Because Elena made me promise.””

That surprised him.

“Promise what?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“That if anything happened to her, I would keep Maya safe.””

Bear looked at the little girl.

His expression softened for a moment.

Then hardened again.

“Where is Elena now?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Bear slammed his hand against the table.

The sound shook the room.

“Everybody knows something except me.””

Nobody answered.

His breathing grew heavier.

Twenty-five years of grief.

Twenty-five years of believing he wasn’t enough.

And now every answer created three more questions.

Maya stepped closer.

“Bear.””

He looked down.

“My mom said not to hate them.””

“Who?””

“The people who lied.””

Bear frowned.

“Why?””

Maya’s voice became quiet.

“Because she said hate makes people stay trapped.””

Bear stared at her.

A child repeating words from a woman he thought he lost forever.

Elena’s words.

Her wisdom.

Her heart.

Still reaching him after all this time.

Daniel slowly reached into his pocket.

Bear immediately reacted.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel carefully pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Bear looked down.

The photo showed Elena.

Older.

Alive.

Standing beside a small house.

And beside her…

Was a man.

A man Bear had never seen before.

But someone he recognized immediately.

Because the man was wearing the same silver ring Vincent Cross was known for wearing.

Bear’s blood ran cold.

Daniel whispered:

“She wanted you to see this before anything else.””

Bear stared at the photograph.

Then noticed something written on the back.

A date.

A location.

And one sentence.

“Do not trust the man who says he saved me.””

Bear slowly turned toward Marcus.

Because for the first time that night…

May you like

He wondered if the person who protected Elena…

Was the same person who destroyed them.
