Chapter 12: The Doctor's Last Confession

Dr. Samuel Whitmore lived in a large brick house on the east side of town.

The property was surrounded by tall hedges, and a stone pathway led to the front entrance.

When we arrived, the front door was already open.

Bear immediately looked around.

"Nobody gets out of the vehicle until I check.""

He stepped onto the pavement.

Linda followed him.

Sophie and I waited inside.

A minute passed.

Then two.

Finally, Bear returned.

"Come on.""

We entered together.

The house smelled of coffee and antiseptic.

A television played quietly in the living room.

But there was no sign of the doctor.

"Dr. Whitmore?"" Sophie called.

A faint noise came from upstairs.

We followed it.

At the end of the hallway was a study.

The door stood slightly open.

Inside, an older man sat behind a desk.

He had silver hair, tired eyes, and a white shirt with the top button undone.

He looked up when we entered.

"Maya. Sophie.""

I stopped.

"How do you know us?""

He gave a sad smile.

"Because your mother talked about you constantly.""

Sophie folded her arms.

"Then you should have protected her.""

The doctor's expression fell.

"You're right.""

He stood slowly.

"I should have.""

I placed the hospital documents on his desk.

"Did you change my mother's medication?""

He looked at the papers.

Then he removed his glasses.

"No.""

"Then who did?""

He took a breath.

"Vanessa requested the change. She told me your mother was experiencing severe pain and that Richard had approved additional medication.""

"Did you verify it?""

He hesitated.

"Not properly.""

I felt my anger rising.

"Why not?""

"Because I trusted Richard. He was listed as her medical representative. And Vanessa presented documents that appeared to authorize the change.""

"Did you sign them?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

Sophie stepped forward.

"You signed a prescription without examining the patient?""

"I believed I was following the appropriate procedure.""

"That isn't an answer.""

He looked at her.

"I know.""

I picked up the medication chart.

"Patricia said the dosage was changed.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know it was dangerous?""

He sat down.

"I knew it required careful monitoring.""

"Was my mother monitored?""

He looked away.

"No.""

The silence was unbearable.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Then why did you approve it?""

His voice became quiet.

"Because Vanessa told me Evelyn was refusing treatment. She said your mother had become difficult and was making accusations against everyone.""

"Did you believe her?""

"At the time, yes.""

I stared at him.

"You believed a woman who wasn't even your patient.""

He didn't defend himself.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a small digital recorder.

"I have something you need to hear.""

Sophie looked at me.

The doctor placed the device on the desk.

"Your mother gave me this on October 21. She asked me to keep it safe.""

I stared at it.

"The original recording?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother's voice appeared.

"Samuel, I need you to listen carefully.""

The doctor looked down.

My mother's voice continued.

"I have reason to believe Vanessa has been replacing my medication.""

A second voice answered.

Dr. Whitmore.

"That's a serious accusation, Evelyn.""

"I know.""

"Have you told Richard?""

"Richard knows more than he's admitting.""

There was a pause.

Then my mother continued.

"I found the bottle in Vanessa's handbag. It wasn't the prescription you gave me.""

The doctor answered.

"Did you keep it?""

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

"In the blue room.""

I glanced at Sophie.

The recording continued.

My mother spoke again.

"Samuel, if something happens to me, I need you to tell my daughters the truth.""

The doctor answered.

"Your daughters?""

"Both of them.""

I felt tears gather.

My mother continued.

"I don't believe Vanessa is acting alone. Richard is involved, but I think there's someone else helping her.""

A door slammed in the background.

Then a man's voice spoke.

"Who are you talking to?""

My father.

My mother's voice became tense.

"Samuel is checking my medication.""

Dad answered.

"You're becoming obsessed with this.""

"I'm becoming afraid.""

The doctor spoke quickly.

"Richard, perhaps we should discuss this when Evelyn is rested.""

My father's voice grew louder.

"Stay out of my marriage.""

There was a thud.

Then the recording ended.

I stared at the device.

"Why didn't you give this to the police?""

The doctor lowered his head.

"Because Vanessa threatened me.""

Sophie shook her head.

"Another person who chose silence.""

He nodded.

"I know how that sounds.""

"How did she threaten you?"" I asked.

He looked toward the window.

"She had evidence that I had approved the medication change without proper verification. She said she would report me for professional misconduct if I ever spoke about the case.""

"Was she telling the truth?""

"Yes.""

He swallowed.

"I was negligent. I was afraid of losing my license, so I kept quiet.""

I looked at him.

"My mother died.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"And you protected your career.""

He nodded.

"I did.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the doctor opened another drawer.

He removed a thick envelope.

"This contains the original medication bottle, the pharmacy records, and a statement I wrote after Evelyn died.""

I stared at the envelope.

"Why give it to us now?""

"Because yesterday Vanessa came to my house.""

Bear straightened.

"What did she want?""

"The recording.""

"Did you give it to her?""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"She told me that Richard had already spoken to you. She said you were planning to destroy the family.""

I almost laughed.

"She really thinks we're still a family.""

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

Then he said something that made Sophie step backward.

"There's another reason I agreed to meet you.""

He reached into his desk and removed a printed photograph.

It showed Vanessa outside the hospital.

She was speaking to a man in a dark suit.

I recognized him.

My father.

But there was someone else in the photograph.

A third person.

A woman with short blonde hair.

I stared at the picture.

"Who is she?""

The doctor shook his head.

"I don't know her name.""

"Then how is this important?""

He turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten note.

Payment received. Final authorization confirmed.

Beneath it was a bank reference number.

Sophie looked at the doctor.

"Where did you get this?""

"It was attached to a document Vanessa asked me to sign. I kept a copy because I was concerned about the transaction.""

Bear examined it.

"That looks like a payment confirmation.""

The doctor nodded.

"I believe it was.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Who paid her?""

The doctor took a breath.

"That's what I was hoping you could find out.""

Suddenly, a loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Bear moved toward the study door.

"Stay here.""

He stepped into the hallway.

Then we heard a woman's voice.

"Samuel!""

My blood turned cold.

Vanessa.

She had found us.

The doctor stood abruptly.

"How did she get in?""

A second voice answered.

Richard.

"Vanessa, wait!""

Footsteps climbed the stairs.

Bear turned back toward us.

"Nobody moves.""

The study door swung open.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her white coat was gone. She wore a black dress and held a folder against her chest.

Behind her stood my father.

She looked at the recorder.

Then at the envelope on the desk.

"Give me those.""

I stepped forward.

"No.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Maya, you don't understand what you're holding.""

"Then explain it.""

She pointed at the doctor.

"Ask him what really happened that night.""

"I already did.""

"No. You heard what he wanted you to hear.""

She turned toward my father.

"Richard, tell her.""

Dad looked at me.

His eyes were filled with tears.

"Vanessa, stop.""

She laughed.

"You're going to let her destroy us?""

He shook his head.

"We need to tell her.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.

"Don't you dare.""

Dad took a step toward me.

"There's something else I never told you, Maya.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"The woman in that photograph wasn't working for Vanessa.""

He looked toward the doctor.

"She was working for your mother.""

I felt my heart pound.

"What?""

Dad reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.

"Your mother hired a private investigator before she died.""

He placed it on the desk.

"She knew Vanessa was stealing. She knew about the medication. But she had discovered something even worse.""

I opened the document.

It was a report containing photographs, bank records, and a list of names.

At the bottom was a final statement.

Subject identified: Vanessa Carter. Additional beneficiary discovered. Financial connection to Richard Carter confirmed.

I looked at my father.

"What additional beneficiary?""

He closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

"The person who helped Vanessa change your mother's medication was being paid from an account in your name.""

I stared at him.

"My name?""

He nodded.

"And the person who authorized those payments...""

He looked toward the open doorway.

"...wasn't Vanessa.""

He turned the document around.

The final signature belonged to someone I had trusted my entire life.

*RICHARD CARTER.*

And just as I began to understand what that meant, Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a second document.

"There's no point hiding it anymore," she said.

She placed it beside the recorder.

"Because the person who really ordered Evelyn's death is still alive.""

Her eyes moved toward the doctor.

Then toward my father.

May you like

Finally, she looked directly at me.

"And that person knows you're here.""
