Chapter 13: The Person Behind It All

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Vanessa's document lay on the desk between us.

My father's signature was still visible on the investigator's report, but I couldn't stop looking at the words she had just spoken.

The person who really ordered Evelyn's death is still alive.

"Who?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at Richard.

"Tell her.""

Dad shook his head.

"Not here.""

"Of course not here," Vanessa snapped.

"You've spent six years making sure nobody ever hears the truth.""

I stepped between them.

"Enough. I'm done listening to half-truths. Who was responsible for Mom's medication?""

Dr. Whitmore slowly removed his glasses.

"Vanessa requested the medication change. Richard authorized the financial transactions. But neither of them had the medical authority to order what happened afterward.""

"What happened afterward?""

He looked at the document.

"The medication was supposed to be administered under supervision. The revised prescription required monitoring. But the records show that the medication given to Evelyn on her final night was not the same as the medication listed on the chart.""

Sophie covered her mouth.

"Someone substituted it?""

"That's what the evidence suggests.""

I felt cold.

"Who had access?""

The doctor looked toward Vanessa.

"Several people.""

"Names.""

He hesitated.

"Vanessa. Richard. Hospital staff. And the person who arranged the prescription.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Don't look at me. I didn't work in the hospital.""

"No," I said.

"You just made sure the right people did what you wanted.""

Her face hardened.

"You have no idea what your mother was like at the end. She was suspicious of everyone. She accused people of trying to poison her.""

"Because someone was changing her medication.""

"She was sick!""

"And you used that sickness to silence her.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely angry rather than merely irritated.

"You think Evelyn was innocent? You think she never manipulated anyone? She built her little charity empire, made everyone worship her, and left me to clean up the mess.""

"You stole from her.""

"I took what I was owed.""

"You stole my education money.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Your mother promised me a future when she married your father. Then she spent every waking moment making me feel like an outsider.""

I stared at her.

"So you punished a child?""

Her lips parted, but no answer came.

Dad finally spoke.

"Vanessa, stop. Maya deserves the truth.""

She turned on him.

"Now you care about what Maya deserves?""

He looked at me.

"The woman in that photograph was named Helen Price. She worked for Evelyn as a private investigator. She discovered that Vanessa had been using a company called Vantage Lifestyle to move money out of the education trust.""

I remembered the bank statements.

"She found the transfers.""

"Yes. But she also discovered that Vantage was connected to a second company. That company received payments from a hospital supply contractor.""

Dr. Whitmore nodded.

"I recognized the contractor's name.""

He took the document from Dad.

"Northstar Medical Services.""

Sophie frowned.

"What does a supply company have to do with my mother's medication?""

The doctor looked sick.

"Northstar supplied the hospital with several medications. It also had a private consulting arrangement with a foundation controlled by Vanessa.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You paid the hospital?""

"I donated to a foundation.""

"Through a company that supplied medication?""

She said nothing.

Dad rubbed his face.

"Helen found the connection. She told Evelyn that someone was paying for access to the hospital's medication records and staff schedules.""

"Who?""

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"She believed Vanessa was working with someone inside Northstar.""

The doctor slowly sat down.

"That explains why the pharmacy records were altered.""

A sudden knock came from downstairs.

Bear moved toward the hallway.

"Everyone stay here.""

A man's voice called from the entrance.

"Police! We need everyone to remain where they are.""

I looked at the doctor.

He had already contacted them.

A moment later, two officers entered the study.

One was a middle-aged woman with short hair.

"I'm Detective Harris," she said.

"Dr. Whitmore called us. He told us he had evidence relating to Evelyn Carter's death.""

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

"This is ridiculous. I have done nothing wrong.""

Detective Harris looked at the papers.

"That's something we'll determine.""

She instructed everyone to remain in the room while officers collected the documents, recorder, and medication records.

Then she turned toward my father.

"Mr. Carter, we need to speak with you about your financial authorizations.""

Dad nodded.

"I understand.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.

"I'm leaving.""

An officer stepped in front of her.

"Ma'am, please remain here.""

"You can't detain me.""

"We haven't said you were under arrest. We are asking you to stay while we clarify the situation.""

She looked at me.

"This is your fault.""

I didn't answer.

She leaned closer.

"You have no idea what you've started.""

Detective Harris stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

While the officers spoke to Dr. Whitmore, another detective approached with a laptop.

"We recovered a message from the doctor's old email account," he said.

"It appears to be part of the correspondence surrounding the prescription change.""

He turned the screen toward Detective Harris.

There was a message dated October 21.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was an address belonging to Northstar Medical Services.

The subject line read:

*FINAL DELIVERY CONFIRMATION.*

The message contained one sentence.

Make sure the replacement is delivered before midnight. Richard has already approved the payment.

My stomach tightened.

"Does that prove she did it?""

Detective Harris shook her head.

"It proves we have more to investigate. We need the original records, the people involved, and forensic analysis. We won't jump to conclusions.""

Then she looked at the doctor.

"Who was the contact at Northstar?""

Dr. Whitmore stared at the screen.

"I never met him.""

"Did Evelyn?""

He hesitated.

"She said she had.""

"Did she give you a name?""

The doctor closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

I stepped forward.

"What name?""

He looked at me.

"Your mother said the person responsible was someone she had known for years.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Who?""

He spoke quietly.

"Daniel Mercer.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I turned toward Bear.

He stood completely still.

Linda, who had entered behind the officers, looked as though she had been struck.

"No," she whispered.

I stared at the man who had stood beside me through every discovery.

The man who had brought my mother's letter.

The man who had protected me when I had nowhere else to turn.

"Bear?""

He looked at me.

"Maya, listen.""

Detective Harris immediately stepped between us.

"Mr. Mercer, I need you to come with me.""

Bear didn't resist.

But before the officers led him away, he looked directly at me.

"Your mother knew I was investigating Northstar. She knew I had found something.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

His eyes filled.

"Because I promised her I would keep you safe.""

I shook my head.

"From what?""

He hesitated.

May you like

Then he said the words that shattered everything.

"From the truth about the night she died.""
