Chapter 14: The Promise He Couldn't Keep

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Bear walking away with the detectives.

The man who had stood outside my graduation ceremony.

The man who had carried my mother's letter.

The man who had promised to protect me.

Now his name was connected to the investigation into her death.

Linda sat beside me in the police station waiting room.

Sophie was across from us, holding the photograph of Evelyn and the newborn baby.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Finally, I asked the question that had been tearing through my mind.

"Do you think he did it?""

Linda looked at me.

"No.""

"How can you be sure?""

"Because I knew your mother. And I knew Daniel.""

"People keep saying they knew each other. That doesn't mean anything.""

Linda nodded slowly.

"You're right. But I also know what happened after Evelyn died.""

She leaned forward.

"Daniel disappeared for almost a year. He stopped leading rides. He stopped attending charity events. He barely spoke to anyone.""

"Why?""

"Because he blamed himself.""

"For what?""

Linda looked down.

"He had promised Evelyn he would protect you. He believed he had failed.""

Before I could respond, Detective Harris entered.

"Mr. Mercer has agreed to speak with you, Maya. But only with an officer present.""

I stood immediately.

"Can I see him?""

"Yes.""

She led me into a small interview room.

Bear sat at the table.

Without his leather vest, without the familiar group surrounding him, he looked older.

He raised his eyes when I entered.

"Maya.""

I sat opposite him.

"Tell me everything.""

He nodded.

"Your mother came to me six years ago. She said someone was using the hospital to change her medication. She had discovered the connection to Northstar.""

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I did. I gave them what I had.""

"Then what happened?""

"Nothing. The evidence was incomplete. Northstar claimed the payments were legitimate consulting fees. The hospital denied any unauthorized medication changes.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know about the prescription?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know Mom was afraid?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you stay with her?""

His expression crumpled.

"Because I wasn't there when it mattered.""

He explained that on the night Evelyn died, he had received a message from her asking him to come to the hospital.

But before he could arrive, a second message came from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Maya outside her school.

Underneath it were the words:

Stay away, or the child becomes part of this.

I felt sick.

"They threatened me?""

Bear nodded.

"I believed they were serious. I thought if I stayed away, they would leave you alone.""

"So you abandoned Mom.""

"I thought I was protecting you both.""

"Did you know she died?""

"Linda called me the next morning.""

I looked at him.

"And you never told me about the threat?""

"I couldn't. I didn't know who sent it. I was afraid they were still watching.""

I sat back.

"Why did the doctor say your name?""

Bear took a breath.

"Because I met Helen Price.""

"The investigator?""

"Yes. She found out Northstar was using a shell company to move money. She wanted me to help identify the people involved.""

"Did you?""

"I did. But before she could give me the full report, she disappeared.""

My heart pounded.

"Disappeared?""

"She left town. Nobody knew where she went.""

Detective Harris entered the room.

"Mr. Mercer, we found something in the evidence you provided six years ago.""

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Bear standing outside the hospital.

The date was October 22.

The morning after my mother's death.

I stared at him.

"You were there?""

He nodded.

"I arrived too late.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I found something in the parking garage.""

He took a small breath.

"A hospital access card. It belonged to someone from Northstar.""

Detective Harris placed another photograph beside it.

A woman stood beside a black sedan.

The same blonde woman from the investigator's report.

"Do you recognize her?"" she asked.

Bear studied the photograph.

Then his face changed.

"That's Helen.""

I stared.

"But you said she disappeared.""

"She did.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"We located her this morning.""

My heart began pounding.

"Where?""

"She has been living under a different name in another state. She agreed to speak with us.""

"Can we see her?""

"Not yet. But she has already provided a statement.""

Detective Harris opened a folder.

"Helen says she was hired by Evelyn to investigate the trust. She discovered Vanessa's connection to Northstar, but she also found that the company had another client.""

"Who?""

The detective looked at me.

"Your father.""

I closed my eyes.

Dad had admitted signing the transfers.

But this was different.

"What was he paying them for?""

"According to Helen, Richard paid Northstar to obtain private information about Evelyn's medical treatment. He claimed he wanted to protect his wife.""

I looked at Bear.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

Detective Harris continued.

"Helen also says she saw Richard meeting a Northstar representative on the evening Evelyn died.""

My throat tightened.

"Did she see what happened?""

"She says she saw him enter the hospital. She didn't witness the medication being administered.""

The detective closed the folder.

"We are reviewing all of this. It is important not to assume we know who caused Evelyn's death until the evidence is examined.""

I nodded.

Then Bear leaned forward.

"Maya, there's something else.""

I looked at him.

"Your mother left me a final message. She said if you ever discovered the truth, I should tell you that the money wasn't the real reason she was killed.""

"What was?""

He reached into his pocket and removed a small envelope.

It was old, creased, and sealed.

"Evelyn gave this to me two days before she died.""

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Daniel,

If they discover what I found, they will come after Maya. The money can be replaced. The truth cannot.

The person who arranged the medication change believes I never discovered the second account.

But I did.

It belongs to someone who has been using my name for years.

I looked up.

"Whose account?""

Bear pointed to the bottom.

There was a bank account number and a name.

*CARTER FAMILY FOUNDATION.*

I frowned.

"That's the charity Mom helped create.""

Bear nodded.

"Yes. But someone continued using it after her death.""

Detective Harris looked at the page.

"Do you know who controlled it?""

I shook my head.

Then Linda spoke from the doorway.

"I do.""

We all turned.

She was holding a printed statement.

"I found this in Evelyn's old charity files. The foundation's account was transferred three days after she died.""

"To whom?"" I asked.

Linda handed me the paper.

The new administrator was listed beneath the transfer date.

My eyes moved across the page.

And stopped.

*SOPHIE BENNETT.*

I looked at my sister.

She had gone completely pale.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

The detective took the document.

"Miss Bennett, did you ever authorize this transfer?""

Sophie shook her head.

"No. I was twenty-one. I didn't even know this foundation existed.""

I stared at the paper.

Someone had used her name.

Someone had made it look as though she had received control of the charity.

And then I remembered the clause in Mother's trust.

If evidence of financial exploitation involving either beneficiary was discovered, all distributions would be suspended.

Someone had been trying to make Sophie look guilty.

Someone wanted us to lose the inheritance.

And someone had known exactly how to separate us.

Sophie reached for my hand.

"Maya, I swear I didn't do this.""

I squeezed her fingers.

"I believe you.""

Detective Harris looked toward the door.

"We need to investigate this transfer immediately.""

Then her phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed.

"What do you mean the foundation account was emptied?""

She looked at us.

"How much?""

A pause.

"All of it?""

She ended the call.

"The account was emptied this morning.""

I stared at her.

"By whom?""

She looked at the statement again.

"The withdrawal was authorized using a digital identity linked to your father.""

I felt the room go silent.

Richard had confessed to signing documents.

He had admitted knowing about the money.

But now he had emptied the account while everyone was looking elsewhere.

May you like

And when Detective Harris called his phone, it went straight to voicemail.

My father was gone.
