Chapter 9: My Father's Confession
I couldn't move.
The words on the camera screen seemed to burn into my eyes.
*RICHARD'S CONFESSION.*
My father stared at the device.
Vanessa had stopped struggling.
Even Bear had gone completely still.
I pressed play.
A video appeared.
The camera showed my mother sitting at the same desk.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied loosely behind her head, and a blanket covered her shoulders.
"October twenty-first," she said quietly.
"If anything happens to me, this is what I want Maya to understand.""
She paused.
Then she looked toward someone outside the frame.
"Richard, sit down.""
My father's voice answered.
"I don't want to do this.""
"You need to.""
The camera shifted slightly.
Dad appeared.
He was younger, wearing a blue shirt I remembered from family photographs.
He looked nervous.
My mother placed a folder on the desk.
"Tell Maya what you signed.""
He stared at the folder.
"Evelyn, please.""
"Tell her.""
He lowered his head.
"I signed the authorization.""
My stomach tightened.
"What authorization?"" I whispered.
Bear placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Keep watching.""
On the screen, my mother continued.
"The education trust?""
Richard nodded.
"And the insurance policy?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Did you know Vanessa had already taken money from Maya's account?""
"Yes.""
My father covered his face.
"How much?"" my mother asked.
"About eighty thousand.""
"About eighty thousand?""
He nodded.
My mother stood.
"Richard, there was one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in that account.""
"I know.""
"That money was for our daughter!""
"I know!""
His voice broke.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then my mother asked a question I would remember for the rest of my life.
"Did you ever love Maya enough to protect her from the person you married?""
My father looked directly at her.
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you?""
He had no answer.
The video paused briefly.
My mother adjusted the camera.
Then she continued.
"Tell her about the night you came to my room.""
Dad looked toward the camera.
His face had gone pale.
"Evelyn, I don't think this is necessary.""
"It is.""
He took a breath.
"I told you I wanted to move the remaining money.""
"And?""
"You refused.""
"And what did you say?""
He looked down.
"I said I would do whatever was necessary.""
My mother nodded.
"Exactly.""
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
My father stood behind us.
His breathing was uneven.
I turned slowly.
"Was that real?""
He wiped his face.
"Maya—"
"Was that real?""
He nodded.
I felt something inside me collapse.
"You signed away my education money.""
He said nothing.
"You knew Vanessa was stealing.""
He nodded again.
"And you threatened Mom?""
"I didn't mean it the way it sounded.""
I laughed bitterly.
"How was it supposed to sound?""
He stepped closer.
"I was under enormous pressure.""
"From whom?""
He looked toward Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
"Richard, don't.""
I turned to her.
"Don't what?""
She raised her chin.
"Don't twist things. Your father was making decisions for this family.""
I stared at her.
"Which family?""
She blinked.
"The Carter family.""
I pointed toward the photographs scattered across the floor.
"My mother built that family. You stole from it.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Your mother was never as innocent as you think.""
Bear moved forward.
"Careful.""
But Vanessa ignored him.
"She was controlling. She treated Richard like a child. She made everyone believe she was some kind of saint.""
I looked at her.
"She was dying.""
"And she still wanted to control everything!""
My father suddenly spoke.
"Vanessa, stop.""
She turned toward him.
"No, Richard. I'm done protecting you.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Ask your father what happened to the insurance money.""
I looked at him.
He closed his eyes.
"Richard?""
He finally spoke.
"The policy paid out.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Two million dollars?""
He nodded.
"And where is it?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She smiled coldly.
"Some of it paid for this house. Some went into investments.""
"Whose investments?""
"Mine.""
The word hung in the air.
I stared at her.
"You took my mother's life insurance money, too?""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Your father signed the documents.""
I turned toward Dad.
"How much did I inherit?""
He didn't answer.
"How much?""
His voice was barely audible.
"Nothing.""
I stared at him.
"Nothing?""
"Your mother changed the beneficiary before she died. But the change was disputed.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"By whom?""
He looked toward Vanessa.
She folded her arms.
"By me.""
I couldn't believe it.
"You challenged Mom's final wishes?""
"Your mother wasn't competent.""
"Then why did she have a lawyer?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
My father sat down on the edge of the bed.
"Maya, please. I know I've made mistakes.""
I looked at him.
"These aren't mistakes.""
He began crying.
"I loved your mother.""
"Then you should have protected her.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
He stared at the floor.
Vanessa suddenly answered.
"Of me.""
Everyone turned.
She laughed quietly.
"Your father was terrified of losing his comfortable life. He knew about the transfers. He knew about the insurance. He signed everything because I told him what would happen if he didn't.""
Dad stood.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Don't you dare pretend you were innocent.""
Bear moved between them.
"Enough.""
I looked at my father.
"Did you know she was changing Mom's medication?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you?""
He swallowed.
"I knew Vanessa was arranging the prescriptions.""
My stomach dropped.
"Arranging?""
"She said Dr. Whitmore was helping manage your mother's pain.""
"Did you know the dosage was changed?""
He nodded slowly.
I stepped away from him.
"Did you know Mom was afraid?""
He covered his face.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to spin.
I had spent six years waiting for my father to come home and tell me everything would be okay.
Six years hoping he would remember that I was his daughter.
And now I knew.
He had watched my mother become frightened.
He had watched her fight for me.
And he had chosen silence.
I reached for the camera and stopped the video.
"You're coming with me.""
Dad looked up.
"What?""
"You're going to tell the police everything.""
Vanessa burst out laughing.
"You think the police will believe you?""
Bear took out his phone.
"They don't have to believe us. They can examine the documents.""
Vanessa's smile vanished.
She looked toward the door.
Linda stepped into the room.
She had arrived quietly and was holding a small envelope.
"Before anyone leaves," she said, "Maya needs to see this.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a letter from my mother.
It was addressed to a judge.
The letter requested that I be placed under the guardianship of a trusted family friend if anything happened to her.
The name appeared beneath the request.
*DANIEL MERCER.*
I looked at Bear.
He nodded slowly.
"Your mother wanted us to take care of you.""
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
"But why didn't you?""
His expression became painful.
"Because the court never received this letter.""
"Who stopped it?""
Linda looked toward Vanessa.
"Someone filed a different guardianship request three days after Evelyn died.""
I looked at the document.
The signature at the bottom was Richard Carter's.
But the person named as the recommended guardian wasn't my father.
It was Vanessa.
I looked up.
"Why?""
My father finally spoke.
"Because Vanessa said she would take care of you.""
I stared at him.
"And you believed her?""
He lowered his head.
Then Vanessa said something that made everyone turn toward her.
"Enough pretending, Richard. Tell her why you really agreed.""
Dad looked at her.
"Don't.""
"Tell her!""
He shook his head.
Vanessa stepped closer to me.
"Your father didn't choose me because he trusted me, Maya.""
She smiled without warmth.
"He chose me because I had something that could destroy him.""
My heart began racing.
"What?""
She reached into her handbag.
For a moment, I thought she was reaching for her phone.
Instead, she removed a small photograph.
She placed it on the desk.
It showed my mother standing beside a newborn baby.
A baby I had never seen before.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
The truth about Maya's real inheritance begins here.
I looked at my father.
His face had turned completely white.
"Who is that baby?"" I whispered.
He didn't answer.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Your father has been lying to you about something much bigger than the money.""
She pointed at the photograph.
"Because the little girl in this picture isn't your sister.""
She paused.
"She's the reason your mother changed her will.""
May you like
And just as I reached for the photograph, my father whispered:
"Maya, there's something about your birth that you were never supposed to know.""
