Chapter 1: The Wedding Dress Torn Apart

“Brielle, stop!”” I screamed as my sister-in-law ripped my maternity gown apart in the middle of her own wedding reception. I thought I was walking into a room full of people who loved me.

I thought my husband’s family had finally accepted me. Then my husband’s sister tore open the one thing I was wearing to protect the secret she begged me to hide.

The ballroom was glowing when everything fell apart.

Crystal chandeliers reflected across the polished marble floor. White roses covered every table, and hundreds of tiny lights shimmered above the guests like stars trapped inside glass. The music had just faded after the bride’s entrance, and everyone was still smiling.

Everyone except Brielle Carter.

She stood in front of me in her perfect white lace wedding gown, holding the edge of my light-blue maternity dress in her hands.

Her fingers tightened.

For one second, I didn’t understand what was happening.

Then she pulled.

The fabric ripped with a sharp sound that cut through the entire ballroom.

The torn piece fell onto the marble floor.

A wave of gasps moved through the crowd.

I froze.

My hands immediately covered my pregnant belly.

“Brielle!”” Marcus shouted from across the room.

My husband pushed through the guests, his black tuxedo jacket moving as he rushed toward us. His face had changed completely. A few seconds earlier, he had been smiling beside his family. Now his eyes were filled with disbelief.

Brielle looked at me like she had been waiting for this moment all night.

“You’re ruining my wedding!”” she snapped.

I stared at her, unable to speak.

The woman standing in front of me wasn’t just Marcus’s sister.

She was the person who had hugged me when I told her I was pregnant. The person who cried with me when I thought motherhood would never happen. The person who whispered that she would always protect me.

Now she was the one trying to humiliate me.

“Brielle, what are you doing?”” Marcus demanded as he stepped between us.

She lifted her chin.

“What does it look like?””

“It looks like you just attacked my wife,” Marcus said.

A few guests lowered their phones. Others looked away, uncomfortable. The photographer stood frozen near the stage, unsure whether to keep filming.

Brielle’s expression hardened.

“She shouldn’t have come here dressed like that.””

I looked down at the torn fabric hanging from my hands.

“What are you talking about?”” I whispered.

She gave a cold laugh.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Nia.””

My stomach tightened.

I had spent months trying to keep peace with this family. I had ignored the strange comments. The suspicious looks. The way Brielle’s smile disappeared whenever Marcus wasn’t watching.

But this was different.

This wasn’t jealousy.

This was fear.

Marcus looked from his sister to me.

“What did you do to my wife?””

Brielle’s confidence cracked for a moment.

Only for a moment.

Then she pointed at me.

“She started it.””

The entire room went silent.

I blinked.

“What?””

“She came here looking for attention,” Brielle said loudly.

“She always does. Everything has to be about her.””

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Marcus stepped closer to his sister.

“Brielle, you ripped her dress.””

“She pushed me first.””

“That’s a lie.””

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Brielle looked at me.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You really want to do this?””

I held her gaze.

“Yes.””

Because for the first time, I realized something.

Brielle wasn’t trying to embarrass me.

She was trying to stop me from revealing something.

My clutch slipped from my hand as I adjusted the torn fabric around my belly.

It hit the floor.

The small gold clasp popped open.

Everything inside scattered across the marble.

My lipstick rolled away.

My phone slid beneath a chair.

A few tissues fell near Marcus’s shoes.

Then something else landed in the center of the ballroom.

A sealed white envelope.

The room seemed to become quieter.

Marcus looked down.

I saw his expression change.

“Nia?””

My heart stopped.

“Marcus, don’t.””

He bent down anyway.

Brielle saw the envelope.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Afraid.

Marcus picked it up carefully.

The envelope had been folded inside my clutch for weeks. I had carried it everywhere because I didn’t know what else to do.

I wasn’t ready.

Not yet.

Marcus turned it over.

His eyebrows pulled together.

“What is this?””

I swallowed.

“Marcus…”

He looked at the front.

His face slowly lost color.

The writing was clear.

CONFIDENTIAL — BRIELLE CARTER.

Marcus looked at his sister.

Then back at the envelope.

Then at me.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody moved.

The bride who had just been smiling for hundreds of guests suddenly looked like she wanted to disappear.

“Give me that,” Brielle said.

Marcus didn’t move.

“Why does my pregnant wife have a hospital file with your name on it?””

A whisper moved through the crowd.

Brielle stepped forward.

“Marcus, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“It’s not what you think.””

“Then what is it?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I watched my husband’s face break with confusion.

He had spent his entire life trusting his sister. He had defended her when people questioned her choices. He had helped her through every difficult moment.

And now she was standing in front of him, hiding something that had been inside my purse.

I looked at the envelope.

I remembered the night Brielle came to my house.

The night she held my hands and cried.

The night she made me promise.

“Please, Nia,” she had whispered.

“Marcus can never know.””

At the time, I thought she was asking me to protect her feelings.

I was wrong.

I was protecting a secret that could destroy everything.

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia, what did she tell you?””

My eyes filled with tears.

I didn’t want to say it.

Not there.

Not in front of her family.

Not at her wedding.

But Brielle had forced this moment.

“She told me never to show you.””

Brielle’s face went completely pale.

“Stop.””

I looked at her.

“You should have thought about that before you tore my dress in front of everyone.””

Marcus held the envelope tighter.

“What’s inside?””

Brielle rushed forward.

“Marcus, please.””

He stepped back.

“Please what?””

Her voice dropped.

“Please don’t open it.””

That sentence was enough.

Because people don’t beg you not to open something unless they already know what you’ll find.

Marcus stared at his sister.

The music had stopped.

The guests were silent.

The bride stood in the middle of her own wedding reception, no longer looking powerful.

She looked terrified.

Marcus slowly lifted his hand toward the envelope seal.

Brielle whispered his name.

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

And then he opened it.

Inside was a single hospital document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Once.

Twice.

Then he stopped breathing.

“Why…” he whispered.

I watched his fingers begin to shake.

“Why is my name on this?””

My heart dropped.

Because that was the one thing I was afraid of.

Not Brielle’s anger.

Not the ruined wedding.

Not the judgment of every person in that room.

I was afraid of the moment Marcus would finally see the truth.

Brielle stepped closer, tears forming in her eyes.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

Marcus looked up.

“What wasn’t supposed to happen?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

And the fear in her eyes turned into something else.

Desperation.

“Nia,” she whispered.

“Tell him the rest.””

I felt every person in the ballroom staring at me.

Marcus looked between us.

“Tell me what?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit walked inside carrying another sealed envelope.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped on Marcus.

“I’m sorry to interrupt,” he said.

“But I was told this needed to be delivered before anyone found out the truth.””

He held the envelope out.

The name printed on the front made Marcus freeze.

May you like

Because it wasn’t Brielle’s name this time.

It was mine.
