Chapter 8: The Man Who Carried the Wrong Secret

Darius stood in the doorway of the ballroom, breathing heavily.

For a moment, nobody recognized the man who walked in.

Not because his face had changed.

Because everything we believed about him had.

The man who had always been Marcus’s strongest supporter now stood bruised and exhausted, holding an envelope like it contained the weight of the entire world.

Marcus didn’t move.

He just stared.

“Why does my wife’s hospital file have your name on my baby?””

Darius looked down.

A painful silence followed.

Then he closed the ballroom doors behind him.

“I knew this day would come.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew I would find out?””

“I knew someone would eventually.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You let me believe my wife betrayed me.””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Darius looked at me.

And his expression broke.

“I never believed that.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why?””

He looked back at Marcus.

“Because your family gave me a choice.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“My family.””

The words carried so much disappointment.

Darius walked closer.

“Marcus, you need to understand. Your mother and father weren’t trying to protect you.””

“Then what were they doing?””

Darius looked at the envelope in his hand.

“They were protecting their image.””

Brielle whispered:

“My parents…”

Darius looked at her.

“They were afraid everyone would find out what they did.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“What did they do?””

Darius hesitated.

Then handed him the envelope.

“This.””

Marcus didn’t take it immediately.

“What is it?””

“The truth.””

“About what?””

Darius looked at me.

“About the night Nia went to the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus noticed.

His eyes moved to me.

Then back to Darius.

“You know what happened?””

Darius nodded.

“I was there.””

The words hit the room like a crash.

Marcus looked at me.

“You said you were alone.””

I felt tears rise.

“I was.””

Darius immediately shook his head.

“Not completely.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

Darius looked down.

“It means I saw what happened.””

My voice trembled.

“Darius…”

“I’m sorry, Nia.””

The apology in his voice hurt.

Because it sounded like someone who had carried guilt for a long time.

Marcus looked between us.

“Someone please explain.””

Darius took a deep breath.

“Eleven months ago, Nia went to the hospital because she was scared something was wrong.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“She called Brielle.””

“I know.””

“She didn’t tell you because she didn’t want you leaving work and worrying.””

Marcus looked at me.

I looked away.

He remembered.

The night he missed my calls.

The night he arrived home and found me asleep on the couch.

The night I told him everything was fine.

Darius continued.

“But when Nia was at the hospital, your parents found out.””

Marcus frowned.

“How?””

“Because Brielle told them.””

Brielle looked down.

“I was scared.””

Marcus turned to her.

“You told them?””

“I thought they could help.””

Darius shook his head.

“They didn’t help.””

His voice became bitter.

“They saw an opportunity.””

My stomach tightened.

“What opportunity?””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“The opportunity to create doubt.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because they had been trying to convince you to move back home.””

Marcus went quiet.

I knew that was true.

His parents had always wanted him closer.

They talked about family traditions.

Family businesses.

Family expectations.

But I never imagined it went this far.

Darius continued.

“When they found out Nia was pregnant, they panicked.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would they panic?””

“Because they believed the baby would take you away from them.””

Brielle whispered:

“That’s why Mom said…”

Everyone looked at her.

She stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“Finish.””

Brielle swallowed.

“She said once Marcus had a child, his priorities would change.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s normal.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because she didn’t see it as normal.””

Brielle looked ashamed.

“She saw Nia as someone replacing us.””

The words hurt because they explained years of small moments.

The comments.

The cold smiles.

The little insults disguised as jokes.

I had always wondered why his mother treated my love like a competition.

Now I knew.

Darius opened the envelope.

Inside were printed messages.

Hundreds of them.

Marcus looked confused.

“What are these?””

“Messages between your parents.””

Marcus froze.

“You stole their messages?””

“No.””

Darius shook his head.

“I received them.””

“From who?””

Darius looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus unfolded the first page.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

I stepped closer.

The message was from James Carter.

To his wife.

*We need to make Marcus question the pregnancy before the child is born.*

My heart stopped.

Marcus read the next line.

*If he believes Nia lied, he’ll come home.*

His hands started shaking.

“No.””

Darius looked away.

“There’s more.””

Marcus kept reading.

The next message.

*Brielle is emotional, but she will cooperate. She always does.*

Brielle covered her mouth.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She cried.

“No.””

For the first time, I believed her completely.

She had made mistakes.

Huge ones.

But she had also been manipulated.

Marcus turned the page.

Then stopped.

His expression became confused.

“What?””

Darius looked nervous.

“What does it say?””

Marcus read silently.

Then looked up.

“Why is my father talking about a test?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel took the paper.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“The genetic test.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“Your father requested a private DNA test before the baby was born.””

My heart sank.

Marcus stared.

“He tested my baby?””

Darius nodded.

“He wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That the baby wasn’t yours.””

Marcus looked like he might break.

“But why?””

Darius’s voice became quiet.

“Because he already believed the lie.””

“What lie?””

Darius looked at me.

“The lie that you weren’t the only person involved in creating this pregnancy.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

I saw fear return to his eyes.

Not because he believed it.

Because he was afraid there was still something he didn’t know.

Darius quickly stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“No?””

“No, Marcus.””

Darius shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then what did?””

Darius looked at the envelope.

“The test results.””

Marcus froze.

“What about them?””

Darius took out one final document.

“The results came back.””

Nobody breathed.

“And?””

Darius looked at Marcus.

“The baby is yours.””

Relief hit me so hard my knees almost weakened.

But Marcus didn’t look relieved.

He looked confused.

“Then why hide that?””

Darius looked down.

“Because your parents changed the results before you saw them.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“They replaced the report.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is the original?””

Darius looked at the envelope.

“I have it.””

He pulled out another paper.

Marcus reached for it.

But before he could take it, the ballroom doors opened again.

A voice came from the entrance.

“You should have burned that.””

Everyone turned.

An older man stood there.

James Carter.

Marcus’s father.

Behind him was his mother.

Evelyn Carter.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus stared at them.

“You.””

James looked around the room.

The torn dress.

The documents.

The accusations.

Then he looked at his son.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Marcus laughed.

“No.””

His voice shook.

“I finally do.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen to us.””

He looked at her.

“The people I trusted lied to me.””

“Because we were trying to protect you.””

“No.””

He pointed at the documents.

“You were protecting yourselves.””

James’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand family.””

Marcus stared.

“Then explain.””

His father said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Explain why you changed my wife’s medical records.””

Silence.

“Explain why you tried to make me doubt my own child.””

Still silence.

Then Evelyn spoke.

A single sentence.

And it changed everything.

“We did it because the baby wasn’t the only thing we were afraid of losing.””

Marcus frowned.

“What else?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Her eyes were cold.

“We were afraid Nia would tell you what really happened that night.””

My blood ran cold.

Marcus turned toward me.

Again.

That question.

That same question.

“What happened that night, Nia?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I knew the truth.

And I knew once I said it, nothing would ever be the same.

Darius whispered:

“Marcus…”

But it was too late.

Everyone was waiting.

I looked at my husband.

And finally told him the secret I had buried for eleven months.

“I didn’t go to the hospital because I was sick.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why?””

I took a shaking breath.

“Because someone tried to hurt me.””

The room went silent.

Marcus’s face changed.

“Who?””

I looked at Evelyn Carter.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your mother.””
