Chapter 7: The Person Standing Behind Me
The phone slipped slightly in Marcus’s hand.
Not enough to fall.
Just enough for me to notice.
A tiny movement.
A tiny sign that the words had reached somewhere deeper than anger.
“The baby’s real father is someone standing in that ballroom with you right now.””
Rachel’s voice remained on the line.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The ballroom felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing around us.
Marcus looked around slowly.
His eyes moved from me.
To Brielle.
To Daniel.
Then back toward the empty entrance.
Searching.
Calculating.
Terrified.
“Rachel,” he said quietly.
“Tell me you’re wrong.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“I wish I was.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Who is it?””
A pause.
Then Rachel said:
“I can’t say it over the phone.””
His expression changed.
“Why?””
“Because he may be listening.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately looked toward the ballroom doors.
Brielle whispered:
“Listening?””
Rachel continued.
“Marcus, you need to understand something. Darius wasn’t trying to prove he was the father.””
“Then what was he doing?””
“He was covering up the truth.””
Marcus looked at me.
My heart was pounding.
Because suddenly every person in that room looked like a possibility.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had lied.
“Rachel,” Marcus said, “you called me. You knew this day would happen.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was part of it.””
The words shocked all of us.
Marcus stepped back.
“What?””
“I helped create the documents.””
My breath caught.
Daniel immediately moved closer.
“What documents?””
Rachel ignored him.
“I thought I was helping my family.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“Your family?””
“Yes.””
“Who is your family?””
Silence.
Then Rachel answered:
“The Carters.””
Brielle went pale.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know her?””
Brielle looked away.
That was all the confirmation we needed.
“Brielle.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She’s my cousin.””
The room went silent.
Another secret.
Another person connected to the lies.
Marcus laughed quietly.
“I don’t even know my own family anymore.””
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But every word felt too small.
Because Marcus wasn’t just discovering a betrayal.
He was discovering a pattern.
A family that had spent years making decisions for him.
Without him.
Rachel’s voice came through again.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“I’m listening.””
“Darius found out about the original file.””
“How?””
“Because he was looking for proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That the story your mother created wasn’t true.””
Marcus frowned.
“What story?””
Rachel took a breath.
“The story that Nia cheated on you.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Even hearing it said aloud hurt.
Marcus looked at me.
“I knew she didn’t.””
His voice was quiet.
But firm.
“I know.””
Rachel continued.
“Darius knew too.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why put his name as the father?””
“Because someone forced him.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“Who?”” Marcus asked.
Rachel hesitated.
“Your mother.””
Brielle closed her eyes.
Marcus looked like he had been punched.
“My mother forced Darius?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don’t know all the details.””
Rachel’s voice became lower.
“But I know she threatened him.””
“With what?””
“His career.””
Marcus stared.
“What does my mother have on him?””
“I don’t know.””
A pause.
“But Darius was scared.””
Marcus looked down.
“So he changed the records?””
“No.””
Rachel’s answer came quickly.
“He changed one thing.””
“What?””
“He changed the father name.””
The room went still.
Marcus looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to protect someone.””
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Who?””
Then Rachel whispered:
“Nia.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
Rachel continued.
“Darius knew your mother was trying to destroy Nia’s life. He changed the record because he thought if he made himself the father, the investigation would stop.””
Daniel frowned.
“That makes no legal sense.””
“I know.””
Rachel sounded exhausted.
“He panicked.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So Darius sacrificed himself?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because your mother made sure he couldn’t.””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“Did you know this?””
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
For once, I believed her.
She looked as shocked as everyone else.
Marcus put the phone on speaker.
“Rachel, if you know all this, why wait until now?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because tonight was the first time I saw Darius scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“He found out someone was going to expose the original file.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Rachel’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Your father.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Marcus’s face changed.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Brielle whispered:
“Dad?””
Rachel continued.
“Your father knew everything.””
Marcus looked like he couldn’t process another betrayal.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
His voice grew louder.
“My father wouldn’t do this.””
Rachel didn’t respond.
Because she didn’t need to.
Marcus knew.
Somewhere inside him, he knew.
Daniel stepped forward.
“We need to verify this.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How?””
Daniel checked his phone.
“The hospital security footage.””
“Of what?””
“The person who attempted to delete the file.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel opened the video.
A grainy image appeared.
A person walking through the hospital records department.
The quality wasn’t perfect.
But the shape was clear.
The person was tall.
Wearing a dark suit.
Holding a folder.
Marcus stared.
“No.””
The figure stopped near the computer.
Turned slightly.
The face became visible.
Even from the small screen, we could recognize him.
Marcus’s father.
James Carter.
My stomach dropped.
Brielle covered her mouth.
“No…”
Marcus didn’t speak.
He just stared.
The man who had taught him honesty.
The man who gave speeches about family values.
The man who hugged me and called me his daughter.
Was the same man who had entered hospital records and tried to erase my child’s truth.
Daniel paused the video.
“There’s more.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Daniel opened another file.
“This footage was taken two hours before the records were changed.””
A new image appeared.
A meeting.
Inside a hospital office.
James Carter.
Darius Cole.
And someone else.
Someone sitting with their back to the camera.
Marcus leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Daniel zoomed in.
The person turned slightly.
And my blood went cold.
Because I knew that face.
Marcus knew it too.
“No.””
His voice broke.
Because the third person wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t a distant relative.
It wasn’t a hospital employee.
It was someone who had held my hand.
Someone who had cried when she heard my baby’s heartbeat.
Someone who had told me she loved me.
Brielle stared at the screen.
“Mom…”
Marcus looked at the three people in the video.
His father.
His mother.
His best friend.
All together.
All hiding something.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
Marcus read it silently.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He turned the phone around.
The message was short.
But it destroyed the last bit of certainty we had.
*Stop looking for the truth, Marcus.*
*Because the truth will hurt your wife more than it hurts you.*
A second message appeared.
*Ask Nia what happened the night she went to the hospital.*
Marcus slowly looked at me.
And my heart sank.
Because I knew what he was going to ask.
The question I had prayed he would never ask.
“What happened that night, Nia?”” he whispered.
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
A man stepped inside.
Darius Cole.
His face was bruised.
His clothes were torn.
And he was holding something in his hand.
A small envelope.
He looked directly at Marcus.
“I can explain.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Start with one thing.””
Darius swallowed.
“What?””
May you like
Marcus stepped forward.
“Why does my wife’s hospital file have your name on my baby?””
