Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
Marcus didn’t move.
Not when I said it.
Not when everyone in the ballroom heard the accusation.
Not even when his mother’s expression changed.
He just stood there.
Like his mind was trying to reject what his heart already understood.
“Your mother.””
The words remained between us.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Evelyn Carter stared at me.
Then she laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she couldn’t believe I had finally said it.
“You’re really going to do this?””
Her voice was calm.
Almost disappointed.
Marcus looked at her.
“Mom.””
She turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
One word.
One warning.
But Marcus wasn’t the same man who walked into that ballroom hours earlier.
He had spent the night losing every illusion he had about the people closest to him.
He had no reason left to stay silent.
“No,” he said.
His voice was steady.
“You don’t get to tell me not to ask questions anymore.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Marcus, you are emotional.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m finally awake.””
His father stepped forward.
“This has gone too far.””
Marcus looked at James.
“Did you know?””
James didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You knew.””
James sighed.
“We were trying to protect you.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around the room.
“My sister.””
“My parents.””
“My best friend.””
“All of you keep saying you protected me.””
His eyes filled with anger.
“But nobody ever protected me from the truth.””
I felt tears forming.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
He wasn’t only talking about tonight.
He was talking about years.
Years of people deciding what he could handle.
Years of people controlling his choices.
Evelyn looked at me.
“You don’t understand what you walked into.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She stepped closer.
“You came into this family and changed everything.””
Marcus immediately moved between us.
“Stop.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I’m just telling the truth.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You’re blaming her.””
“I’m explaining.””
“You’re blaming her.””
The room went quiet.
For the first time, Evelyn looked uncertain.
Because Marcus had always defended her.
Always.
Until now.
I looked at Darius.
He stood silently near the table.
Waiting.
Like he knew this moment had been coming.
Marcus turned to me.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“What happened that night?””
I took a breath.
The memory I had buried for months returned.
The hospital lights.
The fear.
The shaking hands.
The feeling that something was wrong.
“It started at your parents’ house.””
James looked away.
Evelyn didn’t move.
Marcus frowned.
“What happened there?””
I swallowed.
“You remember the family dinner?””
“Yes.””
“The night we announced the pregnancy.””
He nodded.
“I remember.””
Everyone had been smiling.
Everyone had congratulated us.
Everyone had acted happy.
But later that night, after Marcus went outside to take a phone call, Evelyn found me alone.
“She asked me to talk privately.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“About what?””
“About the baby.””
Evelyn’s expression remained cold.
“And?””
“She told me I was making a mistake.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What?””
I nodded.
“She said having a baby would ruin your future.””
“That’s not true.””
“I know.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“But she believed it.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“I was worried.””
“You were cruel.””
“I was honest.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were trying to scare me.””
Marcus looked between us.
“What did she say?””
I remembered every word.
Because some words stay with you.
“She told me your family had expectations.””
Marcus frowned.
“She said I didn’t understand what it meant to be a Carter.””
His face darkened.
“What else?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“She told me if I really loved you, I would leave.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked horrified.
“She said that?””
Evelyn didn’t deny it.
Instead, she said:
“Because I knew you were throwing your life away.””
Marcus stared.
“My life?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“Before her, you had plans.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Before her?””
“Yes.””
His mother stepped closer.
“You were focused. Ambitious. You had direction.””
“And after I met Nia?””
“You changed.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s the point.””
“What?””
“I changed because I was happy.””
The sentence hurt Evelyn.
I could see it.
She had never considered that possibility.
That losing control over him could look like him finding happiness.
I continued.
“After she talked to me, I left.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Alone?””
I nodded.
“I didn’t want to fight with your family.””
“And then?””
“I started feeling sick.””
My hands touched my stomach.
“I thought it was stress.””
Darius looked down.
“But it wasn’t.””
I nodded.
“When I got to the hospital, the doctor told me my blood pressure was dangerously high.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your mother called me.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“After I arrived.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“You called her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
I did.
“She wanted me to come home.””
Marcus frowned.
“And?””
“She said if I caused a scene, things would get worse.””
The anger in Marcus’s face was terrifying.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“It means she knew I was scared.””
Evelyn’s expression finally cracked.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“You knew she was in the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I thought you needed time.””
Marcus stared.
“Time?””
His voice broke.
“My wife was in the hospital.””
“She was okay.””
“That’s not the point.””
His anger filled the room.
“The point is you made that decision for me.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I was protecting our family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at his parents.
“You were protecting your version of our family.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s still one thing we need to understand.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The forged documents.””
Marcus nodded.
“Right.””
Daniel looked at James and Evelyn.
“Who actually changed the records?””
James remained silent.
Evelyn looked away.
Then Darius spoke.
“I know.””
Marcus turned.
“You do?””
Darius nodded.
“I found out tonight.””
“Who?””
Darius looked at Evelyn.
Her face went pale.
Marcus whispered:
“Mom?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I did not do it alone.””
James looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at her husband.
For the first time, they looked afraid of each other.
Not united.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who helped you?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Then her eyes moved.
Slowly.
Toward Brielle.
Everyone froze.
Brielle shook her head.
“No.””
Evelyn whispered:
“You need to tell him.””
Brielle backed away.
“No.””
Marcus looked at his sister.
“What?””
Tears filled Brielle’s eyes.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew something.””
She covered her face.
“Yes.””
The confession broke something inside Marcus.
“How much?””
Brielle cried.
“I knew they were changing things.””
Marcus stared.
“You helped them?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I tried to stop them.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Mom threatened me.””
“With what?””
Brielle looked at Evelyn.
And whispered:
“She said she would destroy the one thing I had left.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Brielle looked at me.
Then at him.
“My chance to become a mother.””
My breath caught.
Marcus went still.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The records.
The treatment.
The pregnancy.
The lies.
But there was still one missing piece.
Daniel looked at the final document.
“There is one more file.””
Marcus turned.
“What file?””
“The original genetic report.””
Darius handed it over.
“I kept it hidden because I knew someone would destroy it.””
Marcus opened it.
Everyone watched.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at the report.
Then at me.
Then at Brielle.
“This isn’t possible.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Marcus slowly turned the paper around.
At the bottom was the final result.
The truth.
The answer everyone had been fighting over.
And when I saw the name written there, I felt the world go silent.
Because the baby was mine.
The baby was Marcus’s.
But the person who ordered the test had not been trying to prove who the father was.
They had been trying to prove something else.
Something much more dangerous.
Marcus whispered:
“The test wasn’t ordered to identify the father.””
He looked at his family.
“It was ordered to identify the mother.””
Nobody spoke.
Then he looked at me.
“Nia…”
His voice broke.
“The original report says your DNA was compared against the baby.””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“But the result says…”
He stopped.
Unable to finish.
I took the paper from his hand.
And read the final line.
My hands started shaking.
Because the report confirmed something I had never known.
Something nobody had told me.
Something that changed everything.
*The unborn child was genetically connected to Nia Carter.*
*But the pregnancy sample originally submitted was not from Nia.*
I looked up.
Confused.
Terrified.
“What does this mean?””
Darius whispered:
“It means someone used another woman’s pregnancy sample.””
Marcus stared.
“And whose was it?””
Nobody answered.
Until Evelyn finally spoke.
Her voice barely audible.
“The woman who was supposed to carry the child.””
My blood ran cold.
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
May you like
And she said the one name none of us expected.
“Brielle.””
