Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Documents
The voice outside the office door made everyone freeze.
“You should have left the past buried.””
For one second, nobody moved.
The locked room.
The hidden documents.
The voice of someone standing on the other side of the door.
Everything felt unreal.
Arthur slowly placed the paper back onto the desk.
“Who is there?””
No answer.
Only the sound of footsteps moving away.
Arthur rushed toward the door and pulled it open.
The hallway was empty.
The bright mansion lights reflected off the polished floor, but whoever had been standing there was gone.
Malcolm looked down the hallway.
“He knew we were here.””
Vanessa leaned against the wall, her face pale.
Arthur turned around.
“You knew about this room.””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was the one who locked it.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
I stared at her.
“You hid everything in there?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not everything.””
Arthur picked up the documents again.
“Then what did you hide?””
Vanessa looked at the papers.
“The evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She closed her eyes.
“The evidence that someone else was controlling everything.””
Malcolm stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop pretending you were only a victim.””
She looked at him.
“I made mistakes.””
“You helped cover it up.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know what I did.””
Arthur looked between them.
“Then start explaining.””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“When I met your first wife, she was already suspicious.””
Arthur’s face changed.
“Suspicious of who?””
Vanessa looked at the documents.
“Your business partner.””
Silence.
Arthur frowned.
“My business partner?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then said:
“Richard.””
The name landed heavily.
Arthur stepped back.
“No.””
Malcolm watched him carefully.
“You know that name.””
Arthur looked away.
Richard had been Arthur’s closest business partner for decades.
The man who attended family dinners.
The man who gave speeches at company events.
The man everyone trusted.
“He died ten years ago,” Arthur whispered.
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked confused.
“Then how could he be involved?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because some people don’t need to be alive to destroy your life.””
Arthur picked up the documents again.
Inside were old contracts.
Financial records.
Letters.
Proof of secret transactions.
His hands tightened.
“This…”
He stopped.
“This shows someone was moving money from my company.””
Malcolm nodded.
“Your first wife discovered it.””
Arthur looked at him.
“And Nia?””
Malcolm’s expression softened.
“Your wife discovered she was pregnant before she found the evidence.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Arthur.
He looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“She knew.””
Malcolm nodded.
“She knew Nia was your daughter.””
Arthur sat down.
His eyes filled.
“I missed everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing anyone could say.
I watched him.
A man learning he had lost twenty-four years with his child.
A father who never knew he was a father.
Then Arthur looked at Vanessa.
“And you helped hide her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought I was protecting my future.””
My chest tightened.
“You mean your marriage.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
Arthur stood.
“You let me believe my daughter didn’t exist.””
“I was afraid you would leave me.””
“And that was worth destroying her life?””
Vanessa cried silently.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“No, it wasn’t.””
Suddenly, Malcolm picked up one of the documents.
“There is something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed to a signature.
“This wasn’t Richard’s only connection.””
Arthur took the paper.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Malcolm looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Arthur’s voice became cold.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“The person who helped Richard…”
She paused.
“The person who kept the documents hidden…”
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked directly at Arthur.
“It was someone you trusted more than anyone.””
Arthur stared.
Then the office lights flickered.

The door behind us slowly opened.
And standing in the hallway was someone I never expected to see.
