Chapter 13: The Brother Who Never Died

The room went silent.

Not the quiet kind.

The kind of silence that comes when everyone realizes the world they knew was built on a lie.

Arthur stared at the man standing in the doorway.

His brother.

The man he had mourned.

The man whose death had shaped years of his life.

“You’re dead,” Arthur whispered.

The older man smiled faintly.

“I wanted you to believe that.””

My heart pounded.

Every instinct told me to step away.

But I couldn’t move.

Because this man knew my name.

He knew the moment I was born.

And he knew why I had spent my entire life without my father.

Arthur’s voice became colder.

“Who are you?””

The man looked almost offended.

“You know who I am.””

“No.””

Arthur shook his head.

“The brother I knew would never do this.””

The man’s expression hardened.

“You never knew me.””

The words cut through the room.

Vanessa looked at him with fear.

“You were supposed to disappear.””

He turned toward her.

“And you were supposed to keep quiet.””

Vanessa stepped back.

I looked between them.

They were connected.

Not like strangers.

Like people who had shared something terrible.

Arthur noticed too.

“You both knew.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Arthur…”

“No.””

His voice broke.

“No more excuses.””

He pointed toward the man.

“Start talking.””

The man walked slowly into the room.

His cane tapped against the floor.

“My name is Charles.””

Arthur stared.

“You let me bury you.””

Charles nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed freedom.””

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“Freedom?””

He looked around the mansion.

“You destroyed my family.””

Charles didn’t react.

“I protected what was mine.””

I felt anger rise.

“What was yours?””

Charles looked at me.

“The company.””

The answer was simple.

Cold.

Heartless.

Arthur’s face changed.

“You did all of this for money?””

Charles shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the documents.

“I did it because you always had everything.””

Arthur stared.

“What?””

“The respect. The family. The success.””

Charles stepped closer.

“Everyone saw you as the good brother.””

His voice became bitter.

“And I was always the one standing behind you.””

I understood then.

This was not about money.

It was about resentment.

A wound that had been growing for years.

But innocent people had paid for it.

My mother.

Arthur’s first wife.

Me.

“You ruined lives because you were jealous,” I said.

Charles looked at me.

“You sound just like your mother.””

The mention of Lena made my chest tighten.

“You knew her.””

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt her?””

Charles didn’t answer.

And that silence was worse.

Arthur moved closer.

“Did you?””

Charles looked at him.

“She made choices.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Charles sighed.

“Your wife was intelligent. Too intelligent.””

Arthur’s fists tightened.

“She was trying to protect my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she have to run?””

Charles looked at me.

“Because she found out too much.””

The room went cold.

My voice shook.

“You were afraid of her.””

Charles smiled slightly.

“She was dangerous.””

“No,” I said.

“She was brave.””

For the first time, Charles looked uncomfortable.

Arthur noticed.

“You knew where Lena went.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Charles looked at me.

“Alive.””

The word hit me harder than anything.

Alive.

My mother.

The woman I buried.

The woman I cried over.

The woman I thought I lost.

Arthur grabbed Charles’s arm.

“Where is she?””

Charles pulled away.

“You don’t get to ask that after all these years.””

Arthur’s face filled with rage.

“You took my daughter away.””

Charles looked at me.

“No.””

He pointed at Vanessa.

“She did.””

Vanessa flinched.

I looked at her.

The woman who had hidden the truth.

The woman who had been afraid.

Charles continued.

“She made the final choice.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I thought I was protecting him.””

Arthur looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought if you knew about Nia, everything would fall apart.””

Arthur whispered:

“It did.””

The words destroyed her.

Charles turned toward me.

“But there is something you still don’t know.””

I felt exhausted.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

“What now?””

Charles looked at the old photograph.

“Your mother didn’t leave because she was running from us.””

A pause.

“She left because she was protecting you from someone worse.””

Arthur looked confused.

“Worse than him?””

Charles nodded.

“Yes.””

Everyone froze.

“Who?””

Charles looked toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“The person who has been watching this house for years.””

A chill went through me.

“What person?””

Charles’s expression changed.

Fear appeared for the first time.

“He’s already here.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

May you like

And in the silence, a voice whispered from somewhere inside the house:

“Nia.””
