Chapter 12: The Secret Lena Left Behind

Nobody spoke.

The photograph sat on the desk.

A piece of paper that changed everything.

Arthur stared at it like his eyes refused to accept what they were seeing.

Vanessa slowly reached for it.

Then stopped.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

Malcolm looked at the photograph.

“Who is that?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

I looked closer.

Three people stood together.

My mother.

Arthur’s first wife.

Vanessa.

And behind them…

Arthur’s brother.

The man everyone believed had died years ago.

“That’s impossible,” Arthur whispered again.

David watched their reactions.

“You spent years believing the wrong story.””

Arthur looked at him.

“My brother died.””

David smiled.

“Did you see the body?””

The question destroyed the room.

Arthur said nothing.

Because he hadn’t.

He had trusted what he was told.

Just like everything else.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“You knew.””

David looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You knew he was alive?””

“Yes.””

Her face filled with horror.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

David’s expression remained cold.

“Because you were never supposed to know everything.””

I looked at him.

“You used her.””

David glanced at me.

“Yes.””

The answer was so casual that it made me sick.

“She was easy to manipulate.””

Vanessa looked broken.

Arthur turned toward David.

“You ruined my family.””

David corrected him.

“No.””

He pointed at the documents.

“I revealed what your family was already hiding.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“You destroyed my wife.””

David smiled.

“Which one?””

The question was cruel.

And everyone felt it.

Arthur’s face hardened.

“Get out.””

David didn’t move.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

David looked at me.

“That Nia is the reason everything happened.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Arthur immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

David ignored him.

“Your first wife discovered she was pregnant. She discovered the financial crimes. She discovered Richard’s plan.””

He looked at me.

“And then she discovered you.””

I swallowed.

“She discovered me?””

David nodded.

“She realized your existence could expose everyone.””

Arthur’s voice shook.

“She was my daughter.””

“Yes.””

David looked at him.

“And that’s why they wanted her gone.””

The room became silent.

My mother’s face appeared in my mind.

Her tired smile.

Her late nights.

The way she always told me:

“Sometimes love means running.””

I had always thought she meant leaving.

Now I understood.

She meant surviving.

Arthur picked up the photograph.

“Where is my brother?””

David smiled.

“That’s the question.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“You said he was gone.””

“I said people believed he was gone.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“Where is he?””

David looked at the door.

“Closer than you think.””

The mansion suddenly felt colder.

Arthur looked around.

Every room.

Every hallway.

Every person.

Like he was seeing his own home for the first time.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A cane tapping against the floor.

Slow.

Steady.

Everyone turned.

A figure appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

Arthur stopped breathing.

“No…”

The man smiled.

“Hello, brother.””

Arthur stared.

The entire world seemed to stop.

Because the man standing there was supposed to be dead.

And he looked directly at me.

Then said:

“Nia.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know my name?””

The man smiled.

“Because I was there when you were born.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No…”

Arthur’s voice cracked.

“You’re alive.””

The man looked at him.

“Yes.””

May you like

A pause.

“And I’m the reason your daughter was hidden from you.””
