Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Protected
The emergency lights turned on seconds later.
The dining room glowed faintly.
Everyone looked around.
But nobody was there.
The voice was gone.
Arthur immediately moved toward me.
“Stay close.””
I nodded.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel like I was facing the truth alone.
I had spent years believing I had nobody.
Now I had a father.
A complicated one.
A broken one.
But a father.
Charles stood near the doorway.
“You need to leave.””
Arthur looked at him.
“Why should we trust anything you say?””
Charles accepted the accusation.
“You shouldn’t.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“But you need to understand something.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother knew this day would come.””
I held the letter tighter.
“She planned everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Charles looked at Arthur.
“Because she knew the truth would destroy people.””
Arthur’s voice was quiet.
“She was protecting me.””
Charles nodded.
“She always did.””
That hurt.
Because I realized something.
My mother spent her entire life protecting everyone else.
Everyone except herself.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Approaching.
Arthur looked toward the door.
“Who is there?””
No answer.
Then a figure appeared.
Malcolm stepped forward.
Everyone looked surprised.
Because he was holding something.
An old recorder.
“I found this.””
Arthur stared.
“What is that?””
Malcolm looked at me.
“Your mother’s final message.””
My breath stopped.
“Final?””
Malcolm nodded.
“She recorded it years ago.””
He placed it on the table.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Where did you get that?””
Malcolm looked at her.
“You hid it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“You put it in the one place you thought nobody would look.””
Arthur looked at her.
“Where?””
Malcolm answered:
“The room where Nia worked.””
I froze.
My room.
The small room near the back of the mansion where I kept my cleaning supplies.
The room I had entered every day.
My mother’s message had been there.
All along.
Malcolm pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
“Nia.””
My knees almost gave out.
I grabbed the table.
My mother’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“If you are hearing this, then I know the truth has finally reached you.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Arthur looked away.
Even Charles seemed affected.
“I need you to know something.””
The recording continued.
“You were never a mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
“You were never the reason people suffered.””
A pause.
“You were the reason I survived.””
I cried silently.
My mother continued.
“Arthur, if you are listening…”
Arthur looked at the recorder.
“I’m sorry.””
His eyes filled.
“I should have fought harder.””
The recording continued.
“Vanessa…”
Everyone became still.
“You made choices out of fear.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“But fear does not erase what happened.””
A tear rolled down her face.
Then my mother’s voice became serious.
“There is one person you must never trust.””
Everyone looked at Charles.
But my mother said a different name.
“David.””
The room froze.
David.
The man who had already escaped.
The man who had manipulated everyone.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“He was the real mastermind.””
Malcolm nodded.
“I suspected.””
The recording continued.
“David was never working for Charles.””
Charles looked shocked.
“What?””
My mother’s voice shook.
“He was using all of you.””
The truth hit harder than expected.
Charles.
Vanessa.
Everyone.
Pieces of a larger plan.
Arthur looked around.
“Where is David now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Malcolm checked his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
Arthur grabbed it.
A message.
One line.
I FOUND THE GIRL.
My blood turned cold.
Arthur looked at me.
“He knows where you are.””
The mansion suddenly felt dangerous again.
But this time, I wasn’t the girl hiding from the truth.
I was the truth.
And David knew exactly where to find me.
Then another message appeared.
Not to Arthur.
Not to Malcolm.
To me.
May you like
A single sentence.
Your mother never told you what happened the night you were born.
