Chapter 12: The Child Who Never Existed

Daniel read the birth certificate again.

The hospital number matched Lily's records. The date was identical. The mother's name was Margaret Ashford.

But the child's name had been crossed out and replaced with a different identity.

The certificate listed the father as Daniel's father.

And beneath the altered name was a notation:

*Twin birth — second infant transferred to private care.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you find this?””

“In my mother's safe.””

“Why would she keep it?””

“Because she wanted to control whoever the child became.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Give me that document.””

Vanessa held it tighter.

“No.””

“You have no idea what you're interfering with.””

“Then explain it.””

Eleanor's face flushed.

For the first time, the polished philanthropist looked old and furious.

“You think you can judge me? You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep this family together.””

“You separated children from their parents,” Vanessa said.

“You stole inheritances. You manipulated people into marriages. You even helped cover up a murder.””

Eleanor's expression turned cold.

“And you staged a pregnancy to destroy an innocent woman. Don't pretend you're morally superior.””

Vanessa recoiled.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough. We need to know who the second child is.””

Eleanor looked at him for several seconds.

Then she sat down.

“The second child was born with a serious medical condition. Margaret was exhausted, frightened, and struggling to survive the delivery. The doctors told her one baby might not live.””

Daniel's throat tightened.

“What condition?””

“I don't know the exact diagnosis. The hospital records were altered shortly afterward.””

“Who made the decision to transfer the child?””

Eleanor looked away.

“I did.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“You stole a newborn?””

“I arranged for the child to receive treatment in a private facility. Margaret was told the baby had died.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Did my father know?””

“Not at first. When he found out, he tried to take the child back. But by then, the records had been changed, and the family who had taken the baby refused to cooperate.””

“Who was the family?””

Eleanor's fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.

“The Whitmores.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Your father and Evelyn were told that the child was abandoned. They were offered the opportunity to adopt her. Evelyn wanted another child, but she had suffered several miscarriages before you were born.””

Daniel's mind raced.

His mother had never mentioned adopting a child.

He had never seen evidence of another sibling.

“Did they adopt her?””

Eleanor nodded.

“For a short time.””

“Then where is she?””

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“She's been living under another name for thirty years.””

Daniel felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

“Who?””

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the front door slammed.

A man shouted from the hallway.

“Police! Nobody move!””

Detective Harris entered with several officers, followed by Martin Cole.

Daniel spun toward him.

“You knew about this?””

Cole's face was grim.

“I knew about the adoption records. I didn't know about the second child.””

Eleanor stood abruptly.

“This is private property. You have no warrant.””

Harris held up a document.

“We have a warrant for your arrest on suspicion of fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and involvement in the disappearance of multiple children.””

Eleanor laughed.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.””

Harris stepped forward.

“I know exactly who I'm dealing with.””

An officer moved toward Eleanor.

She suddenly reached into her handbag.

Daniel saw the metallic flash.

“Gun!””

The officer lunged.

A shot rang through the sitting room.

Glass shattered behind Daniel.

Vanessa screamed and dropped to the floor. Cole tackled Eleanor against the sofa, wrenching the weapon from her hand as two officers rushed forward.

For several seconds, the room dissolved into chaos.

Then Detective Harris stood over Eleanor, who lay pinned against the carpet, her silver hair disheveled.

“It's over,” Harris said.

Eleanor spat at her.

“You think arresting me will solve anything? There are people in this city who will make sure you regret this.””

Harris nodded to the officers.

“Take her away.””

As Eleanor was handcuffed, she turned toward Daniel.

“You should have left the past buried.””

Daniel watched her being led out.

“No,” he said quietly.

“You should never have buried it.””

When the house finally fell silent, Vanessa remained on the floor, trembling.

Daniel offered her a hand.

She stared at it.

“Why are you helping me?””

“I'm not forgiving you.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“But if you're telling the truth, we need to find that child.””

Vanessa accepted his hand and stood.

“I think I know where to start.””

She opened the folder and removed a second document.

It was an old adoption record from a private clinic that had closed twenty-eight years earlier.

The adoptive parents' names had been blacked out.

But the child's temporary name remained visible.

*Baby Whitmore — Female — Twin B.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Transferred to St. Agnes Children's Home, October 14.*

Daniel recognized the name.

St. Agnes had been a children's home on the outskirts of the city. It had closed years ago after a financial scandal, but some of its former residents had gone on to become successful professionals.

Lily leaned over his shoulder.

“Do you know anyone who lived there?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Cole examined the record.

“St. Agnes kept handwritten intake ledgers. If the archives survived, they may contain the child's real name.””

“Where are they?””

“In the basement of the old administration building. The property was sold, but the records were never digitized.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Can you get us access?””

She hesitated.

“My mother owned the property through a foundation. I may still have the original access codes.””

“Then we go tonight.””

Cole shook his head.

“Not without backup. If Eleanor was involved in a network this large, she probably wasn't working alone.””

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Stop looking for the second twin. She doesn't know who she is, and she must never find out.*

Another message followed.

It contained a photograph of a woman standing outside a hospital.

She had dark hair, gray eyes, and a small scar above her left eyebrow.

Daniel stared.

The woman looked remarkably like Lily.

Beneath the photograph was a name.

*Dr. Rachel Morgan — St. Agnes Medical Center.*

Lily took the phone from his hand.

“Rachel,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“You know her?””

“She was my doctor when I was a teenager. She helped me after my stepfather died. She told me once that she had grown up in foster care.””

Lily's hands began to tremble.

“She said she never knew her biological parents.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Rachel Morgan.

A doctor who had grown up without a family.

A woman whose records traced back to St. Agnes.

A woman who shared Lily's eyes.

“She's our sister,” Daniel whispered.

Cole looked at the photograph.

“Maybe. But we need proof before we approach her.””

Daniel's phone rang.

The caller ID showed St. Agnes Medical Center.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

“This is the hospital security office. Dr. Morgan asked us to contact you if anyone came looking for her.””

Daniel's heart hammered.

“Why?””

The man on the other end hesitated.

“Because she believes someone has been following her for several days.””

“Where is she now?””

“She left the hospital about twenty minutes ago. She said she was going to meet a family member.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Who?””

The answer came quietly.

“Dr. Morgan said she was meeting her mother.””

Daniel went cold.

“Her mother is dead.””

“That's what we thought, too.””

A pause.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's something else. Before Dr. Morgan left, she asked us to give you a message if you called.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What message?””

The man took a breath.

“She said, 'Tell Daniel that the woman who raised me isn't my mother. And if he wants to know why his father died, he needs to find the woman who gave birth to us.''”

The line went dead.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Lily looked at him, terrified.

Their mother had supposedly died decades ago.

Their father was either dead or missing.

Their uncle had stolen their identities.

And now a woman they had never met was claiming that the person who raised her wasn't her real mother.

Daniel looked toward the dark windows of the Ashford estate.

Somewhere in the city, Rachel Morgan was meeting a woman who might hold the final piece of the truth.

But the question that haunted him was no longer who had killed his father.

May you like

It was whether his father had ever truly known how many children he had.

And whether the woman who gave birth to them had been hiding in plain sight all along.
