Chapter 9: The Wife Who Was Never His
Daniel sat in a private hospital room with his shoulder bandaged and his father's photograph resting on the bedside table.
Across from him, Lily stared through the window at the city lights.
Neither had spoken for nearly ten minutes.
Their father had been taken to another room for medical evaluation. Detective Harris had requested formal statements from everyone involved, and Michael Reed was on his way with the legal documents that could determine the future of the Whitmore company.
But Daniel couldn't focus on any of it.
Vanessa was Eleanor Ashford's daughter.
The woman he had married had entered his life under circumstances that might have been planned years before they met.
“Do you think she knew?”” Lily asked.
Daniel looked at her.
“About her mother?””
“About us. About Dad. About the money.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I don't know.””
Lily turned from the window.
“Christopher said she was involved. He said she knew exactly what she was doing.””
“Christopher lies whenever it suits him.””
“So does Vanessa.””
Daniel had no argument.
He remembered their wedding day, the way Vanessa had cried during his vows, the way she'd whispered that she had never felt so safe with anyone.
He remembered the first time she'd met Evelyn. She had arrived with flowers and a homemade cake, insisting that she wanted to become part of the family.
Had any of it been real?
His phone vibrated.
Detective Harris had sent a message.
*Vanessa has agreed to speak with you. Interview room three. Ten minutes.*
Daniel stood.
Lily caught his wrist.
“Don't let her manipulate you again.””
He looked at his sister.
“I won't.””
The interview room smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee. Vanessa sat at a metal table wearing a plain gray sweatshirt borrowed from the police station. Her hair was tied back, and without makeup, she looked younger than Daniel remembered.
She rose when he entered.
“Daniel.””
He remained standing.
“Sit down.””
She obeyed.
For several seconds, she studied his bandaged shoulder.
“Are you hurt?””
“Don't pretend you care.””
Her lips trembled.
“I do care.””
“Then why did you fake a pregnancy? Why did you accuse my mother of pushing you? Why did you help my brother steal millions of dollars?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I never wanted things to go this far.””
“That isn't an answer.””
She clasped her hands together.
“My mother told me that if I married you, everything would finally be corrected.””
Daniel felt a chill spread through him.
“Your mother?””
“Eleanor.””
“Did you know who I was before we met?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed something inside him.
“How long?””
“My mother introduced me to your family through a charity event. She knew you would be there. She told me to make a good impression.””
Daniel stared at her.
“So our first meeting wasn't an accident.””
“No.””
“And the second?””
“She arranged that, too.””
He pulled out the chair opposite her.
“Tell me everything.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“My mother said the Whitmores had stolen money from her family. She claimed your father had taken funds from a joint investment and used them to build his company. She said he had also ruined her sister's life by refusing to return Lily.””
“That's not what happened.””
“I know that now.””
“When did you learn the truth?””
Vanessa looked at the table.
“Three weeks ago.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Christopher showed you the postnuptial agreement.””
She nodded.
“He told me you were preparing to divorce me. He said your mother was helping you remove me from the estate before I could claim anything.””
“So you decided to fake a fall.””
“I panicked.””
“You bought a prosthetic belly, wore it under your dress, and deliberately threw yourself down a staircase. You screamed that my mother tried to kill your unborn child.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I thought if you believed she was dangerous, you'd finally cut her out of your life.””
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
“You were willing to send an innocent woman to prison.””
“I didn't think you'd actually call the police.””
“Of course you didn't. You thought I'd do what you wanted because I loved you.””
She wiped her face.
“I did love you, Daniel.””
He looked away.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you lie to me about everything?””
Vanessa's shoulders shook.
“Because my mother told me the truth would destroy us all.””
“What truth?””
She lifted her eyes.
“She said your father had another child. She said he had hidden money in a trust and that the Whitmores had stolen it from her family. She wanted me to marry you, gain access to your financial records, and help Christopher recover the assets.””
Daniel felt sick.
“You married me for the company.””
“At first.””
“And later?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I fell in love with you.””
He let out a bitter laugh.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you've been playing a role for years.””
She reached across the table.
Daniel pulled his hand away.
Vanessa recoiled.
“My mother said the company should have belonged to the Ashfords,” she continued.
“She said your father had manipulated everyone. Christopher believed her. He told me that if I helped him get control of the shares, we'd both be protected.””
“Protected from what?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“From the people who wanted the original documents.””
Daniel's pulse quickened.
“What documents?””
“The ones your father left behind. The documents proving that Eleanor had diverted money from the Ashford family trust before she married Richard.””
Daniel went still.
His father had been accused of stealing money from the Ashfords, but perhaps he had actually discovered that Eleanor was the one taking it.
“Why would she need you to marry me?””
“Because she believed your father had hidden the evidence inside the Whitmore company records. She thought marrying me into the family would give her access.””
“And Christopher?””
“He wanted the money for himself. He told her he would help recover the documents, but he planned to keep the company.””
Daniel leaned back.
Two people had been using each other.
Christopher wanted the company.
Eleanor wanted the evidence.
Vanessa had been caught between them, though she had willingly helped them both.
“Did Eleanor know Christopher was planning to kill my father?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Did you know?””
“No!””
Her answer came too quickly.
Daniel stared at her.
“Vanessa, my father survived the accident. Someone has spent twenty years keeping him hidden. Someone killed Richard Ashford.
Christopher kidnapped my sister. How can you expect me to believe you know nothing?””
She covered her face.
Then she whispered, “Because I wasn't supposed to marry you.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“My mother originally wanted me to marry Christopher.””
The room seemed to contract around them.
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“She believed he could control the company more easily if he married into the family. But Christopher was already involved with other women, and he refused to settle down. Then my mother discovered that you were the legal heir.””
Daniel stared at her.
“So she changed the plan.””
“She told me to get close to you. I thought it would be temporary. I thought we'd marry, I'd gain access to your accounts, and then I'd leave.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Because you were kind to me. Because you trusted me. Because for the first time in my life, I felt like someone wanted me for who I was.””
Daniel felt no satisfaction in hearing it.
If her feelings had been real, they had existed alongside calculated deception.
He couldn't separate one from the other.
“Did my mother know about the plan?””
“No. She genuinely believed I was pregnant when I first told her.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You told her, too?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wanted to buy baby clothes. She started knitting a blanket.””
For a moment, Daniel saw Evelyn sitting beside the fireplace, carefully working the needles through pale blue wool. She had shown him the unfinished blanket only two weeks earlier, smiling as she imagined holding her first grandchild.
Vanessa had stolen that joy from her.
Daniel stood.
“We're finished.””
“Daniel, please.””
He reached the door.
“There's one more thing,” Vanessa said urgently.
He stopped.
“My mother has the original documents. She knows your father is alive now. And she knows Lily has the trust records.””
Daniel turned.
“What is she planning?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She told Christopher that if the documents aren't recovered by tomorrow morning, she'll release something that will destroy your company permanently.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“Your father admitting that he stole the Ashford money.””
Daniel's mind raced.
“Is it real?””
“I don't know.””
She leaned forward.
“But there's something else. My mother said that after tomorrow, it won't matter who owns the company.””
“Why?””
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because she plans to reveal that the man who came back from the dead isn't your father at all.””
Daniel stared at her.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he remembered the photograph of his father at the hospital, the original accident report, the scar on the older man's face, and Christopher's terror when the man had entered the warehouse.
Someone had returned from the dead.
But what if the person standing beside Lily wasn't Daniel's father?
What if the entire reunion had been another carefully staged deception?
Daniel walked out of the interview room and called Martin Cole.
“Where is my father?””
“At the hospital,” Cole replied.
“Don't let him leave.””
A pause.
“Daniel, what's happened?””
“Vanessa says Eleanor Ashford plans to prove that the man who returned isn't my father.””
Cole said nothing.
“Martin?””
When he finally answered, his voice sounded strained.
“Daniel, there's something I should have told you before you went to the warehouse.””
“What?””
“The man who entered that building wasn't the only person who survived your father's accident.””
Daniel's blood turned to ice.
“Who else survived?””
Cole exhaled slowly.
“The driver. The man officially recorded as dead.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Where is he?””
“He's been living under a new identity for twenty years.””
“Who is he?””
Cole's answer was almost inaudible.
“Your father's twin brother.””
Daniel stopped walking.
His father had never mentioned having a twin.
Not once.
And if the man in the warehouse wasn't his father, then someone had spent twenty years preparing a deception so elaborate that even Daniel's own eyes could no longer be trusted.
At the end of the hallway, Lily appeared.
She held a document in one hand.
“Daniel,” she said, her voice trembling.
“I found something in the trust records.””
He turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at the page, then at him.
“The man who raised me after my mother died wasn't my stepfather.””
Daniel stared.
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
“He was the man who was supposed to have died in the car accident.””
And behind her, at the far end of the corridor, the hospital room door slowly began to open.
