Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath Her Dress

Daniel replayed the office footage three times.

The first time, he stared at the figure.

The second time, he checked the timestamp.

The third time, he recognized the watch.

It belonged to his younger brother, Christopher.

“That's impossible,” Daniel muttered.

Vanessa was still on the floor, one hand resting over the fake belly beneath her dress. Evelyn stood several feet away, silent and pale.

“What is it?”” Evelyn asked.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

On the screen, Christopher entered the office carrying a leather folder. He closed the door, glanced toward the ceiling, and walked directly to the locked filing cabinet beneath Daniel's desk.

He knew where the spare key was hidden.

Daniel watched his brother open the cabinet.

Christopher removed a blue envelope, photographed its contents with his phone, and placed everything back exactly as he had found it.

Then he turned toward the camera.

He smiled.

Not nervously.

Not apologetically.

He smiled as if he knew Daniel would eventually watch the footage and wanted him to understand that he had been outsmarted.

“Christopher,” Daniel whispered.

Evelyn moved closer.

“What has your brother done?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone a shade paler.

“You know something about this.””

It wasn't a question.

Vanessa shook her head too quickly.

“Daniel, please. You're upset, and I'm scared, and the baby—”

“Stop saying that.””

She flinched.

Daniel pointed at her abdomen.

“Take it off.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?””

“The belly. Take it off.””

“Daniel, how can you be so cruel?””

He let out a humorless laugh.

“Cruel? You just accused my mother of trying to kill a child that doesn't exist.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

For the first time, she seemed to understand the full meaning of what they were seeing.

Vanessa pushed herself upright.

“I'm not taking anything off in front of her.””

“Then take it off in front of me.””

“I won't!””

Daniel's voice rose.

“Then I'll call the police and let them do it.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

The tears returned, but they no longer looked convincing.

“You wouldn't dare.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You don't know me at all.””

He called the police and requested an ambulance, explaining that his wife had staged an apparent fall and that the security footage showed a possible attempt to frame his mother.

Vanessa began screaming before he had finished the call.

“You're going to destroy my life over a misunderstanding!””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No, Vanessa. You nearly destroyed mine.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You miserable old woman! You were always waiting for a chance to get rid of me!””

The insult hung in the foyer.

Evelyn didn't respond.

She simply looked at the young woman she had welcomed into her home, the woman whose favorite meals she had learned to cook and whose birthday she had celebrated with a diamond bracelet.

“I defended you when my friends questioned your intentions,” Evelyn said softly.

“I told my son that you loved him.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Then you should have minded your own business.””

Daniel stared at his wife.

There it was.

The truth without its costume.

He stepped away from her.

“Who are you?””

Vanessa's expression crumpled.

“I'm your wife!””

“No. My wife wouldn't do this.””

“You don't know what I've been through!””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at him for several seconds.

Her breathing grew uneven.

Finally, she whispered, “I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So you decided to make me believe my mother was a criminal?””

“I needed you to choose me!””

“I chose you when I married you.””

“You still chose her every time she criticized me!””

“She never criticized you for anything except spending money you didn't have.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“That was none of her business!””

“You used my mother's credit card to buy a forty-thousand-dollar necklace.””

“You gave me access to the account!””

“For emergencies.””

“I was your wife!””

“And you were supposed to be my partner.””

The sirens sounded outside.

Vanessa looked toward the front door, then back at Daniel.

For a moment, something calculating moved behind her eyes.

“Fine,” she said, wiping her cheeks.

“You want the truth? I'll give it to you.””

She gripped the hem of her dress and pulled it upward.

Beneath it was a flesh-colored silicone prosthetic, secured with a wide elastic harness around her waist and lower back.

The fake belly had a small tear along one side where the impact had shifted it.

Evelyn turned away.

Daniel felt sick.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa dropped the dress.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes!””

“I bought it online.””

“Why?””

She stared at him.

Then she said something that made the entire house seem to go silent.

“Because you were going to leave me.””

Daniel's anger faltered, replaced by disbelief.

“What are you talking about?””

“Three weeks ago, I found the email from your attorney.””

He frowned.

“What email?””

“The one about the postnuptial agreement. The one saying that if we divorced, I wouldn't automatically get half of everything.””

Daniel stared at her.

He had asked his attorney to draft the agreement after discovering several unexplained withdrawals from their joint account. He had intended to discuss it privately with Vanessa.

He had never sent her the email.

“How did you get that document?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Christopher showed me.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

His brother had known about the agreement.

His brother had given it to Vanessa.

And now Christopher had been caught entering the office to photograph Daniel's medical records.

“What did Christopher tell you?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“He said you were planning to divorce me. He said your mother was helping you.””

“That isn't true.””

“He said you were going to have me removed from the house before I could claim anything.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She shook her head.

“I knew nothing about this.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don't care what you believe anymore,” Daniel said.

The front door opened.

Two paramedics entered with a stretcher, followed by a uniformed police officer.

Daniel explained what had happened and handed over the security footage. The paramedics checked Vanessa's vital signs and asked whether she had sustained any injuries.

She insisted she was fine.

The officer, a broad-shouldered woman named Detective Harris, listened without interrupting.

Then she crouched beside Vanessa.

“Ma'am, did you tell your husband that you were pregnant?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Yes.””

“Do you have medical documentation confirming the pregnancy?””

Vanessa's silence answered the question.

Detective Harris glanced at the prosthetic beneath the dress.

“I'm going to need you to explain why you were wearing that.””

Vanessa began crying again.

This time, nobody rushed to comfort her.

While the officer documented the scene, Daniel returned to the office recording.

He downloaded the file and opened the blue envelope Christopher had examined.

The first page was a report from a private investigator Daniel had hired two weeks earlier.

He had suspected someone was siphoning money from his company.

The report included bank transfers, photographs, and a list of shell companies.

But one line made Daniel's hands tremble.

*Subject: Christopher Whitmore. Suspected diversion of company funds: $2.8 million.*

Daniel read it again.

Then he opened the final attachment.

It was a photograph taken outside a hotel six days earlier.

Christopher stood beside Vanessa.

Her hand rested on his chest.

His arm circled her waist.

They were kissing.

Daniel's throat tightened.

He looked toward the foyer, where his wife was speaking quietly with Detective Harris.

Then he looked at the photograph again.

His brother hadn't simply helped Vanessa stage the fall.

They had been together.

And the money missing from Daniel's company had been disappearing for months.

Daniel enlarged the photograph.

On Vanessa's wrist was a distinctive silver bracelet.

He had bought it for her anniversary.

On Christopher's wrist was the matching one.

Daniel had bought that for his brother, too.

His phone buzzed.

A new text appeared from an unknown number.

*Don't believe everything you see on camera, Danny. Ask your mother what happened the night Dad died.*

Daniel read it twice.

Then he looked up at Evelyn.

She was standing by the broken teacup, staring at the floor.

When she noticed him watching, she closed her eyes.

“Mom,” Daniel said slowly.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

May you like

Evelyn's face crumpled.

And for the first time that afternoon, she looked more frightened than Vanessa.
