Chapter 4: The Daughter They Buried in Silence
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing in his ears.
“My sister?”” he repeated.
Evelyn nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“Your father had a daughter before you were born. Her name was Lily.””
Daniel stared at the photograph again. His father looked younger in it, perhaps thirty-five, with his arm around a dark-haired woman wearing a hospital gown. The newborn lay against the woman's chest, wrapped in a white blanket.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
Beneath the message, another line had been written in smaller handwriting.
*If she ever comes looking for us, tell her the truth.*
“Where is she?”” Daniel demanded.
Evelyn pressed her trembling fingers against her lips.
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I've never met her.””
“You signed documents that helped someone steal my father's company. You knew about this baby. And you're telling me you don't know where my sister is?””
“Daniel, please listen to me.””
He slammed the photograph onto the workbench.
“No! I've spent my entire life believing Dad had one child. You let me believe that. You let me grow up without a sister, without knowing she existed!””
Evelyn flinched.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From my own family?””
She lowered her head.
The silence that followed was worse than any explanation.
Daniel paced across the garage, dragging both hands through his hair. His mind kept returning to the same questions. Why had his father hidden a daughter?
Why had Evelyn kept the secret? And what did any of it have to do with Christopher stealing millions from the company?
“Start at the beginning,” Daniel said.
“And don't leave anything out.””
Evelyn sat on the edge of the workbench.
“Your father met Lily's mother, Margaret, before he met me. They were young. They loved each other, but Margaret's family disapproved of him. They wanted her to marry someone wealthy, someone from their own social circle.””
“So Dad walked away?””
“No. Margaret left town when she discovered she was pregnant. Your father didn't know about the baby until months later.””
“Then what happened?””
“He found her. He wanted to marry her, but her family threatened to destroy his business before it had even started. They told him that if he pursued her, they would make sure neither of them ever saw the child again.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who was her family?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“The Ashfords.””
The name meant something to him. Everyone in the city knew the Ashfords, a wealthy family whose investments stretched from real estate to private hospitals. Their daughter, Victoria Ashford, had recently appeared in business magazines as the new chairwoman of the family foundation.
Daniel had met her twice at charity events.
She had been polite, reserved, and strangely interested in his father's company.
“Why would they threaten Dad?””
“Because Margaret's father had arranged another marriage for her. Your father was a young mechanic with no money, no connections, and no family name worth mentioning. They believed he would ruin her life.””
“So he let them take his daughter?””
“No.”” Evelyn shook her head sharply.
“He fought them. He hired lawyers. He tried everything.
But Margaret's family had money, Daniel. More money than your father could imagine.””
“And Lily?””
“Margaret eventually married the man her parents chose. He agreed to raise the baby as his own, but only if your father stayed away.””
Daniel looked down at the photograph.
“Did Dad agree?””
“He thought he had no choice. He believed Lily would have a better life if she remained with her mother.””
“That doesn't sound like him.””
“It wasn't easy for him. He sent letters. He tried to establish a trust. Most of them came back unopened.””
Evelyn reached into her cardigan and produced another folded document.
“Your father never stopped looking for her.””
Daniel unfolded it.
It was a bank statement dated twenty years earlier, showing a transfer into a trust account established in Lily's name.
The balance was substantial.
“Where did the money go?””
“I don't know. Your father discovered that someone had been accessing the trust shortly before he died. He thought it was someone from Margaret's family.””
“And Christopher?””
Evelyn's eyes filled again.
“Christopher found out about the account. He was only seventeen, but he'd already started gambling. Your father caught him taking money from the company and threatened to report him.””
Daniel remembered the recording.
Christopher came to see me tonight.
“He threatened Dad,” Daniel whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father told me Christopher had become involved with dangerous people. He wanted to give him one last chance to make things right. He planned to meet with his lawyers the following morning.””
“But he never made it.””
“No.””
Daniel gripped the workbench.
“Did Christopher cause the accident?””
Evelyn looked away.
“I don't know.””
“Mom!””
“I don't know!”” she cried.
“I suspected it, but I had no proof. The police said the brakes failed. Christopher said your father had been drinking. He told everyone that your father was exhausted and careless.””
Daniel felt sick.
“And you believed him?””
“I was terrified. Christopher told me that if I questioned the accident, he'd tell the police your father had been stealing from his own company. He had documents, Daniel. Documents with your father's signature.””
“Were they real?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel stared at her, struggling to reconcile the woman before him with the mother he thought he knew.
“Why did you sign the witness statement against me?””
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
“Christopher came to me last month. He said someone had discovered the old trust account. He threatened to expose what I'd signed twenty years ago unless I helped him.””
“What did you sign?””
“A statement saying your father had been mentally unstable before his death. He told me it was needed to settle an old insurance matter.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You signed a document that could destroy my company.””
“I didn't know he intended to use it against you.””
“You didn't ask?””
“I was afraid!””
Her voice cracked.
“I have been afraid for twenty years, Daniel. Every time I thought about telling you, I remembered your father's funeral. I remembered how Christopher stood beside you and promised he'd always protect you. I couldn't bear the thought of losing both my sons.””
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, he understood that his mother had been carrying more than grief.
She had been carrying a secret that had grown heavier with every passing year.
But understanding her fear didn't erase what she'd done.
“Where does Victoria Ashford fit into this?”” he asked.
Evelyn looked confused.
“Who?””
“She's the current head of the Ashford foundation. I've met her. She looks about my age.””
“I don't know anyone by that name.””
Daniel took out his phone and opened the photograph again.
“The baby's mother was Margaret Ashford. If the family raised Lily, Victoria might know something.””
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Then her expression changed.
“Oh, Daniel.””
“What?””
“Margaret had another child.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“A son. Christopher was born two years after Lily, but Margaret never told your father about him until much later.””
Daniel's stomach tightened.
“Are you saying Christopher is—”
“No.”” Evelyn shook her head.
“Your brother is your father's son. But Margaret's husband adopted him after Margaret's second marriage. The families were connected long before any of us understood how.””
Daniel stepped backward.
It was too much to process.
Christopher had stolen from their father, possibly threatened him, and helped Vanessa frame Evelyn. Now he appeared to be connected to the same family that had taken Daniel's sister away.
His phone rang.
Michael Reed's name flashed across the screen.
Daniel answered.
“Tell me you found something.””
“I did,” Michael said.
“I checked the documents Christopher filed. The transfer of shares is based on an old trust agreement. If it stands, he could claim controlling interest in the company.””
“How is that possible?””
“Because the beneficiary listed in the agreement isn't Christopher.””
Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.
“Who is it?””
Michael paused.
“Lily Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“That's my sister.””
“Yes. And according to the paperwork, she has been receiving dividends from your father's company for years.””
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Where have those dividends gone?””
Michael's answer came quietly.
“Into an account controlled by Christopher.””
Before Daniel could respond, another notification appeared on his phone.
An email from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line contained four words.
*I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.*
Daniel opened it.
There was no greeting, no explanation.
Only a photograph of a woman standing outside a courthouse, holding a manila folder.
Beneath it was a single sentence.
*My name is Lily Whitmore, and your brother has been stealing from me since the day I was born.*
At the bottom of the email was a meeting address.
May you like
And a warning.
*Come alone. If Christopher sees you first, neither of us will get the truth.*
