Chapter 11: The Truth Behind the Cancellation
The room exploded into silence.
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
Maya stared at him.
“They said someone contacted the venue and requested the wedding payments be frozen.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn’t me.””
The coordinator looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry, Maya. The request came from an authorized contact.””
Everyone looked at Denise.
Then at me.
Then at Daniel.
Nobody knew what to believe.
Maya’s face hardened.
“Who has access?””
The coordinator checked the paperwork.
“Your mother was listed.””
Denise went completely still.
“What?””
Maya looked at her.
“Mom?””
Denise’s lips parted.
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, I would never.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Denise, what did you do?””
The accusation was immediate.
And I saw the pain on her face.
Not anger.
Pain.
Because everyone had spent the last day searching for someone to blame.
But sometimes the person in the middle was just someone who had been afraid.
“Stop,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I walked toward the coordinator.
“Show us the request.””
She hesitated.
“It contains private information.””
“I’m the person who paid the expenses.””
She looked at Maya.
Maya nodded.
“Show him.””
The coordinator opened the email.
The sender information appeared.
My eyes moved across the screen.
Then stopped.
Because the name wasn’t Denise.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was a company.
A legal office.
Maya frowned.
“What does that mean?””
I read the message.
The request wasn’t to cancel the wedding.
It was a temporary hold.
A review.
Someone had questioned the financial agreement.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What financial agreement?””
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly, everyone looked at me.
Maya noticed.
“Marcus?””
I looked at the email again.
Then I understood.
Someone had found the loan documents.
Someone knew about the money I borrowed.
And someone was trying to make sure the wedding couldn’t continue until the debt issue was addressed.
“I need to make a call,” I said.
Maya grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“Not this time.””
“What?””
“You don’t get to protect everyone alone.””
The sentence surprised me.
Because it sounded like something I had told her years ago.
She turned toward Daniel.
“You know something?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
She studied him.
And this time, she believed him.
Then she looked at Denise.
“Mom?””
Denise took a deep breath.
“There is something I need to tell you.””
Everyone became still.
Denise sat down.
“I was the one who asked Marcus not to tell you everything.””
Maya looked hurt.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Denise looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
Maya frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Denise wiped her tears.
“When Daniel left, I was broken. Marcus became your guardian. He became the person you depended on.””
She looked at Maya.
“And I was afraid one day you would realize I couldn’t give you what he gave you.””
Maya’s expression softened.
“Mom…”
“I made mistakes.””
Denise looked down.
“I let Marcus carry too much because I knew he would.””
I looked away.
Because that was true.
She continued.
“When the wedding planning started, I saw how much Marcus was spending.””
Maya looked at the statement.
“And?””
“I wanted to help.””
Denise swallowed.
“But when Daniel came back, everything became complicated.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Complicated?””
Denise looked at him.
“You came back and wanted your place again.””
Daniel went quiet.
“And Maya was happy to have you.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know where I belonged anymore.””
Maya stared at her.
That was the first time she saw her mother not as a parent.
But as a person.
A person who had been scared.
The coordinator quietly left the room.
Giving the family privacy.
Maya walked toward Denise.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Denise cried.
“Because I was afraid you would see all the ways I failed.””
Maya hugged her.
And for a moment, the room softened.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
Maya noticed.
“Who is it?””
Daniel answered.
A few seconds passed.
Then he looked at me.
“Marcus…”
I stood.
“What?””
Daniel lowered the phone.
“The legal office isn’t investigating the loan.””
Everyone froze.
“Then what are they investigating?”” Maya asked.
Daniel looked at her.
“They’re investigating who actually paid the wedding deposit.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because the payment didn’t come from your account.””
Maya looked confused.
“Then whose account did it come from?””
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
May you like
And said:
“Mine.””
