Chapter 5: The Secret Denise Kept Buried

The reception hall had never felt so quiet.

Not even the music playing softly from the speakers could cover the tension.

Maya stood between three people who had shaped her entire life.

Her mother.

Her biological father.

And me.

The man she had just called her stepdad.

Daniel placed the envelope on the table.

“I think Maya deserves to know.””

Denise shook her head.

“Not like this.””

Maya turned toward her.

“Not like what?””

Nobody answered.

That was when Maya stopped being confused.

She became angry.

“What is everyone hiding from me?””

Her voice filled the room.

“Maya,” Denise said softly.

“No.””

She stepped back.

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You came here saying people are lying.””

Then she looked at me.

“You came here saying I don’t know the truth.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“So tell me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel took a breath.

“Your wedding was paid for.””

Maya frowned.

“Yes. Marcus told me.””

Daniel nodded.

“But he didn’t tell you everything.””

I watched him carefully.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was another document.

He placed it beside the expense statement.

Maya picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s a loan agreement.””

The room changed instantly.

Maya looked confused.

“A loan?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your stepfather didn’t just pay for the wedding.””

He paused.

“He borrowed money.””

I stayed silent.

Because it was true.

And because I knew exactly where this was going.

Maya looked at me.

“Marcus?””

I didn’t look away.

“Yes.””

Her voice became softer.

“You borrowed money for me?””

I nodded.

“I wanted you to have the wedding you dreamed about.””

She stared at the paper.

“But why?””

I smiled sadly.

“Because you dreamed about it since you were little.””

Daniel interrupted.

“And because he wanted everyone to think he was the one who made your life possible.””

My eyes moved toward him.

There it was.

The real reason he came.

Not closure.

Not love.

A competition.

“That’s not what happened,” I said.

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

“Isn’t it?””

Maya looked at me.

“Marcus?””

I stepped closer.

“No one forced me to do anything.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Of course you’d say that.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why are you talking like that?””

He looked surprised.

“Like what?””

“Like you’re fighting him.””

Daniel looked away.

For a second, he looked embarrassed.

Then his expression changed.

“Maya, I’m just trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“You’re trying to protect your image.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know me.””

“You’re right.””

I nodded.

“I don’t.””

I pointed toward the papers.

“But I know what I see.””

I looked at Maya.

“I see a man who came back the week before your wedding.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And I see a man who wants to control his daughter with money.””

The words hit the room.

Maya looked at me.

Then at the statement.

Then at the loan agreement.

I could see her trying to put everything together.

Finally, she whispered:

“Did you ever regret it?””

The question surprised me.

“What?””

“Paying for everything.””

My heart sank.

Because after all these years, that was what she wondered.

I looked at her.

“No.””

She looked down.

“Not even now?””

A long silence followed.

Then I answered honestly.

“Not the money.””

Her eyes lifted.

“But I regret that you thought love had to come with a receipt.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Daniel was quiet.

For a moment, I thought maybe the truth had finally reached her.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” Denise asked.

Maya didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the phone around.

The message was short.

*“Ask Marcus why he never told you what happened the night your father left.””*

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked at me.

And this time, he wasn’t smiling.

May you like

Maya looked up.

“What happened that night?””
