Chapter 3: The Conversation Nobody Expected

The next ten minutes felt like an entire lifetime.

Denise stood near the windows, phone pressed against her ear.

Maya watched her mother’s every expression.

I watched Maya.

Because even after everything, I still knew her.

I knew the way she tapped her fingers when she was anxious.

I knew the way she avoided eye contact when she was scared.

And right now, she was scared.

Finally, Denise ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

“Maya?”” I asked.

She looked at her mother.

“What did he want?””

Denise slowly put the phone down.

“He wants to come by tonight.””

Maya blinked.

“Tonight?””

“He said there are things he needs to explain.””

A bitter feeling moved through my chest.

Things.

That was always the word people used when the truth became inconvenient.

Maya looked at me.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

She studied my face.

And for the first time that day, she believed me.

The room became quiet again.

Then Maya looked down at the expense statement.

“Did you really pay for all of this?””

I nodded.

“Almost everything.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I smiled sadly.

“Because parents don’t keep receipts for love.””

That sentence made her look away.

For a moment, she looked like the little girl I remembered.

But then her phone buzzed.

She checked it.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

Denise stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Maya didn’t answer.

She just turned the phone around.

A message appeared on the screen.

From her biological father.

“I’m bringing something tomorrow that will change everything.””

Denise covered her mouth.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Maya looked at me.

“Do you think he’s trying to ruin the wedding?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

And that was the truth.

I didn’t know what he wanted.

I didn’t know why he came back now.

I didn’t know why after years of silence, he suddenly wanted a place in her biggest moment.

But I knew one thing.

Tomorrow was not going to be the simple wedding everyone imagined.

Maya walked toward the gift table.

She picked up the statement again.

Her thumb moved across the printed total.

Forty thousand dollars.

A number she had never asked about.

A number she had never thought about.

“Marcus,” she said quietly.

I looked at her.

“Yes?””

Her voice was different now.

Not cold.

Not confident.

Confused.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me how much you sacrificed?””

I looked at the flowers.

At the decorations.

At the room built from years of my work.

“Because I didn’t want you to love me because you owed me something.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

Before she could respond, the doors of the reception hall opened.

A man stood there.

Everyone froze.

Maya slowly turned around.

I knew who he was before she said his name.

“Dad?””

The man smiled.

And in his hand was a small envelope.

He looked directly at Maya.

Then at me.

Then at the wedding statement still sitting on the table.

“I think we need to talk about who really paid for this wedding.””

Nobody moved.

And then he said my name.

“Marcus…”

The way he said it told me everything.

This wasn’t a friendly conversation.

May you like

It was a challenge.

And inside that envelope was something he believed could change the entire story.
