Chapter 12: The Money Nobody Knew About

Nobody moved.

The room felt like it had stopped.

Maya stared at Daniel.

“Your account?””

Daniel nodded.

“I know how it looks.””

She laughed quietly.

“How does it look?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Like he had been secretly helping.

Like he had been the one behind everything.

Like the entire story had changed again.

Maya looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“After I came back, I wanted to help.””

“You didn’t tell me.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He looked away.

And that hesitation returned.

Maya noticed.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“After the wedding.””

The disappointment on her face was immediate.

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t want you to think I was trying to buy my way back into your life.””

The irony was painful.

Because everyone had spent the last day talking about money.

But money was never the real issue.

It was what people used it to avoid saying.

Maya looked at me.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“I kept it private.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He gave a small, bitter smile.

“Because I knew if you found out, you would think I was competing with you.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Were you?””

He looked down.

“At first.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he admitted:

“When I saw how much you had done for her, I felt ashamed.””

Maya looked between us.

“So you paid part of the wedding?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Twenty thousand.””

The number hung in the air.

Half.

Half of what I had paid.

Half of the wedding.

Half of the cost.

But not half of the years.

Maya looked overwhelmed.

“I don’t know what to do with this.””

I walked toward her.

“You don’t have to do anything.””

She looked at me.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I spent my whole life thinking people wanted something from me.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You wanted forgiveness.””

She looked at Denise.

“You wanted me not to see your mistakes.””

Then she looked at me.

“And you wanted nothing?””

I smiled sadly.

“I wanted you happy.””

Her eyes filled.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because everyone wants something.””

I thought about that.

Maybe she was right.

Maybe everyone did want something.

But wanting someone to be happy wasn’t the same as wanting control over them.

I looked at her.

“I wanted one thing.””

She waited.

“I wanted you to know you were loved.””

The room became quiet.

Then Maya turned toward Daniel.

“I need to ask you something.””

He nodded.

“Anything.””

“If Marcus never paid for this wedding…”

Daniel waited.

“Would you still have come back?””

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Maya closed her eyes.

That answer hurt.

But it was honest.

And honesty was something she had been missing.

The next morning arrived too quickly.

The wedding day.

The reception room was full of people.

Family.

Friends.

Guests who had no idea what happened behind closed doors.

Maya stood in the bridal suite.

The dress was perfect.

Her hair was perfect.

But she looked nothing like the confident woman from two days earlier.

She looked like someone who had finally learned the difference between appearances and truth.

A knock came at the door.

She opened it.

I stood there.

“Maya.””

She smiled slightly.

“Are you ready?””

I almost laughed.

“I think that’s my question.””

She looked down.

“I made my decision.””

My heart stopped.

She took a breath.

“I know who I want beside me.””

Outside the room, the wedding music began.

The doors were about to open.

And everyone was waiting to see who would take the first step beside the bride.

Maya reached for the handle.

Then she whispered:

“But there’s something I need to tell you first.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She opened the door halfway.

And standing outside was someone nobody expected.

May you like

Someone who had not been invited.

Someone holding a document that could change everything.
