Chapter 11: The Connection Nobody Saw
The photograph shook in my hand.
Not because I didn’t recognize Jordan.
Because I did.
That was the problem.
The picture showed him standing beside Adrian outside a restaurant.
Both of them smiling.
Both of them looking like they knew each other well.
Too well.
I looked at Marcus.
“When was this taken?””
“Three months ago.””
My stomach dropped.
Three months.
The same time Adrian had suddenly appeared in my life.
The same time he started asking questions about the wedding.
About my future.
About my family.
I looked around the reception hall.
Jordan was laughing with my cousins near the dance floor.
He looked happy.
Normal.
Safe.
My entire body felt cold.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus’s expression was complicated.
“Because I wasn’t sure what it meant.””
“You kept another secret?””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
He accepted it.
“I did.””
I looked away.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was scared.
“I thought we were done with secrets.””
“So did I.””
“Then explain.””
Marcus nodded.
“After I left the bridal suite, I contacted Daniel.””
“The attorney’s son?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He sent me this.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Why would Adrian meet Jordan?””
Marcus was silent.
That silence answered before words did.
“I don’t know.””
I felt my heart racing.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“What?””
“I need to ask him.””
“Maya—”
“I need to hear it from him.””
Marcus nodded.
Because he knew.
He knew I had spent my whole life without answers.
And I was done accepting guesses.
I found Jordan near the dance floor.
“Can we talk?””
His smile faded immediately.
“Sure.””
We walked toward a quiet hallway.
Away from the music.
Away from the guests.
Away from everyone pretending this was a normal wedding day.
I held up the photograph.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
And that hurt more than anything.
“Where did you get that?””
I stared at him.
“That’s your first question?””
Jordan looked down.
“Maya…”
“How long have you known my father?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“How long?””
“A few months.””
I felt like the floor moved.
“You knew him before the wedding?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another “later.””
“What did he want from you?””
Jordan rubbed his face.
“He contacted me.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to understand your life.””
I stared.
“That’s what he told you?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
Jordan looked hurt.
“Maya, I didn’t know everything that was happening.””
“But you knew enough to hide it.””
That landed.
He didn’t argue.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more.
“Why didn’t you?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because he asked me not to.””
My chest tightened.
“He asked you to keep secrets from me?””
Jordan nodded.
“He said you were emotional. He said he wanted to fix things with you before anyone complicated it.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that sounded exactly like him.
Always deciding what I could handle.
Always controlling the timing.
Always believing he knew better.
“What else?””
Jordan hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“What else did he tell you?””
“He asked about the wedding.””
My face went cold.
“Of course he did.””
“Maya—”
“Did he ask how much Marcus paid?””
Jordan looked guilty.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
The noise from the reception felt distant.
Like I was underwater.
“Why?””
Jordan looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
But then his expression changed.
Like he remembered something.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Maya…”
“What?””
“He said something strange.””
My heart pounded.
“What did he say?””
Jordan swallowed.
“He said Marcus had spent years building something that belonged to him.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Jordan shook his head.
“I thought he meant your relationship.””
I looked back toward the reception hall.
Toward Marcus.
The man who had never asked for anything.
The man who had never claimed me.
The man who had spent years giving without demanding.
And suddenly I understood.
Adrian didn’t just want my forgiveness.
He wanted the proof that he still mattered.
The title.
The recognition.
The place beside me.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Maya Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Evelyn Brooks.””
I froze.
“Daniel’s mother?””
“Yes.””
Her voice was trembling.
“I need you to know something about Marcus.””
I looked toward him.
“What?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The adoption paperwork wasn’t the only thing your biological father tried to stop.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What else?””
May you like
Her answer was barely a whisper.
“He tried to stop Marcus from telling you who your biological father really was.””
