Chapter 6: The Secret Marcus Buried

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Marcus caught my expression before I even spoke.

“What did he say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Because suddenly every conversation from the past six months felt different.

Every smile.

Every apology.

Every story Adrian told me about regret and second chances.

Maybe I had been listening for the words I wanted to hear.

Not the ones he was actually saying.

“Who was that?”” Marcus asked.

I looked at him.

“Someone named Daniel Brooks.””

His face changed.

A small reaction.

But I saw it.

“You know him.””

Marcus looked away.

“That’s not important.””

My heart sank.

“Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

The same way people do when they know they can’t hide something anymore.

“He’s my old attorney’s son.””

“Your attorney?””

“Yes.””

“The one who handled the adoption?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stepped closer.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Like he had been carrying a heavy box for years and finally had to put it down.

“When your biological father came back, I knew he would try to rewrite history.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His voice softened.

“Because every time I looked at you, I remembered the little girl who still believed her father would come back.””

I looked down.

“And you didn’t want to take that away from me.””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t want to be another person who hurt you.””

The words stayed between us.

Because that was Marcus.

Even his silence had been about protecting me.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a message from Denise.

*Please come back. You deserve the whole truth.*

I showed Marcus.

He nodded.

“Go.””

“You’re coming with me.””

He shook his head.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“You spent years protecting me from this. You don’t get to stand outside while everyone explains your life.””

For the first time that day, Marcus almost smiled.

A small one.

“You sound like your mother.””

“That’s not a compliment.””

“It is.””

We walked back inside together.

When we entered the bridal suite, Adrian was gone.

Only Denise remained.

She was sitting near the mirror, holding an old folder.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

“The truth.””

She handed me the folder.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Legal papers.

Letters.

The first page had Marcus’s name.

And mine.

I looked at the date.

Twenty years earlier.

My hands froze.

“He really tried to adopt me.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Marcus.

He didn’t speak.

“Why didn’t it happen?””

Denise looked toward the door.

“Because your father came back.””

My jaw tightened.

“And?””

“He threatened to fight it.””

“For what?””

Her eyes filled.

“For control.””

The room became silent.

“He didn’t want to raise you,” Denise said.

“He didn’t want responsibility.””

“Then why stop Marcus?””

My mother looked down.

“Because he didn’t want another man being the father you loved.””

The words hurt because they sounded exactly like Adrian.

Not love.

Ownership.

I turned the page.

There was a letter attached.

Written by Marcus.

I recognized his handwriting.

My hands shook as I read.

Maya,

If you ever read this, it means I failed at keeping my promise to protect you from pain.

But I need you to know one thing.

I never needed a piece of paper to make you my daughter.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Marcus looked away.

I continued.

The day you called me Dad for the first time was the day I became the luckiest man alive.

I covered my mouth.

Because I remembered that day.

I was five years old.

I had fallen asleep during a movie.

When I woke up, I called for him.

Not Marcus.

Dad.

And he cried.

I thought he had something in his eye.

Now I knew.

I looked at Marcus.

“You remember?””

He smiled sadly.

“I remember everything.””

Before I could respond, the door suddenly opened.

Adrian stood there.

His expression was different now.

No confidence.

No charm.

Just anger.

“You weren’t supposed to find those.””

The room froze.

I slowly closed the folder.

“What?””

Adrian stepped inside.

“Maya, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You listen.””

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked unsure.

“You came back because you wanted me.””

He said nothing.

“You came back because you missed your daughter.””

Still nothing.

I looked at the documents.

“Or because you found out Marcus was going to tell me everything?””

Adrian’s silence answered for him.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Maya.””

But I raised my hand.

No.

Not this time.

I needed to hear it from him.

I looked directly at the man who shared my blood.

“Why did you really come back?””

Adrian stared at me.

Then his expression changed.

And his answer was the one sentence I would never forget.

“I came back because I knew Marcus was about to give you something I could never take away.””

May you like

A pause.

“His name.””
