Chapter 13: The Test That Changed Everything

The document on my phone made no sense.

I stared at the words until they stopped looking like words.

*DNA PATERNITY TEST REQUEST*

Requested by:

*Marcus Carter*

My fingers went cold.

I looked up at him.

He was standing across from me, watching my expression change.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Like he had been waiting for this moment for years.

“You did a DNA test?””

The room went quiet.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Marcus.””

He took a breath.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

My mother looked away.

Adrian, standing near the entrance, suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

“I need you to explain.””

Marcus nodded.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

His eyes lowered.

“I should have told you a long time ago.””

I looked at the document again.

The date was years earlier.

Not months.

Not recently.

Years.

“When?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Five years ago.””

The answer hit me.

“Five years?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you do this five years ago?””

He looked at me.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“A hospital record.””

My breath caught.

“The one Evelyn mentioned?””

He nodded.

I felt my anger rising.

Not because he had tested.

Because he had carried this alone.

“You knew there was something wrong.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I didn’t know how.””

I laughed quietly.

“How is that your decision?””

“It shouldn’t have been.””

The honesty stopped me.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting it.

“I found out your biological father had questioned something on your birth records.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

For the first time, there was no anger between them.

Only exhaustion.

“Your father wasn’t just trying to stop the adoption.””

Adrian looked down.

“He was trying to stop the truth.””

I turned toward him.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus spoke.

“The reason Adrian was afraid of the DNA test.””

The room became silent.

“He wasn’t afraid because I might not be your father.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“He was afraid because I might be.””

The world stopped.

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came automatically.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Marcus’s voice softened.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

Because suddenly every piece of my life was moving.

The hospital.

The adoption.

The fear.

The secrets.

“No.””

My mother began crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She covered her mouth.

“Maya…”

“What does that mean?””

The answer came from Adrian.

Quietly.

Broken.

“I wasn’t sure.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He looked older than he had all day.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“When your mother became pregnant, we were separated.””

The room blurred.

“There were problems.””

“Problems?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was not the only person in her life.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Adrian.””

But he continued.

“You deserved to know.””

I stared at my mother.

“Mom?””

She couldn’t look at me.

That hurt more than anything.

“Is he telling the truth?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

One word.

And my entire understanding of myself changed.

My mother sat down.

“I was scared.””

I looked at her.

“I was young. Confused. And I didn’t know what to do.””

“So you let everyone lie to me?””

“No.””

Her tears fell.

“I let myself believe that protecting you meant keeping you from pain.””

The same mistake everyone made.

Everyone thought love meant controlling what I knew.

Marcus stepped closer.

“But there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at him.

“The test results.””

My hands tightened.

“What did they say?””

He looked at the floor.

“I never opened them.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I requested the test.””

He swallowed.

“But I couldn’t open it.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared.

“Afraid of what?””

“That if it said I wasn’t your father, I would lose the only daughter I ever had.””

The tears came instantly.

Because that was Marcus.

Even the possibility of losing me hurt him more than knowing the truth.

“And if it said you were?””

He smiled sadly.

“I was afraid of that too.””

“Why?””

“Because then I would have to tell you something you might not be ready to hear.””

I looked at the document.

“You carried this for five years?””

“Yes.””

“Why now?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because Adrian came back.””

Everything became clear.

Adrian didn’t return because of regret.

He returned because he knew.

He knew there was a truth buried beneath everything.

A truth that could change who had the right to call themselves my father.

I looked at Adrian.

“Did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

“Did you know Marcus might be my biological father?””

His silence was enough.

My heart broke.

Not because he wasn’t my father.

Because he had known something this important and still tried to take Marcus’s place.

“You knew.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

“How long?””

“Since before I came back.””

I stepped away.

“So you came back knowing?””

“I wanted to fix things.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You wanted to control the story.””

He didn’t deny it.

And that was the moment I realized something.

For years, I had searched for a father.

But maybe the truth was more complicated.

Maybe I had been loved by two men.

And hurt by one.

The phone in my hand buzzed again.

A message from Daniel.

*Maya, there is one final page from the hospital file. You need to see it.*

I opened the attachment.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the final note was written by a doctor.

And it said:

*Biological father listed at birth: Unknown.*

I looked up.

“Unknown?””

Everyone froze.

Because that meant something.

Something nobody had considered.

If Adrian wasn’t confirmed…

And Marcus wasn’t confirmed…

Then the truth was still waiting.

And the only person who could reveal it…

May you like

Was the woman who had kept the secret for twenty-eight years.

My mother.
