Chapter 5: The Father Who Chose Me

I left the bridal suite without thinking.

The wedding planner called my name.

The makeup artist asked if I needed anything.

Someone mentioned the ceremony schedule.

None of it mattered.

The only thing I could hear was Marcus’s voice in my memory.

The only thing I could see was that message.

I should have told you sooner.

I walked through the hallway of the venue, still wearing my wedding gown, still holding the invoice like it was evidence in a trial.

Maybe it was.

Maybe my entire life had been a trial between the people who said they loved me and the person who actually proved it.

I found Marcus outside near the empty garden entrance.

He was standing alone.

No anger.

No dramatic exit.

Just a man looking at the ground.

Like he was trying to convince himself leaving was the right thing.

“Marcus.””

He turned immediately.

And the first thing he did was look at my face.

Not the dress.

Not the invoice.

Me.

“Are you okay?””

That question almost destroyed me.

After everything I had said.

After everything I had done.

He was still asking if I was okay.

I shook my head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked away.

“I thought Denise would explain.””

“She didn’t.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Marcus sighed.

The wind moved through the trees behind him.

“I promised her.””

“Promised her what?””

“That I wouldn’t tell you until you were ready.””

I laughed sadly.

“Ready?””

I held up the invoice.

“I wasn’t ready to hear that you paid for my wedding.””

His eyes dropped.

“That wasn’t supposed to be a weapon.””

“I know.””

The words surprised both of us.

Because I meant them.

Marcus looked at me.

“I was angry.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice remained calm.

But there was something underneath it.

Something he had buried for years.

“I wasn’t angry because you chose him.””

I swallowed.

“Then why?””

He looked directly at me.

“I was angry because you thought I was only worth the things I provided.””

My eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“I didn’t raise you because I wanted credit.””

He paused.

“I raised you because you were my daughter.””

The word hit differently now.

Not because he said it.

Because he believed it.

“I signed those papers because when you were eight, your father came back asking to be involved.””

I frowned.

“He came back?””

Marcus nodded.

“He wanted visitation.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because he disappeared again before anything happened.””

I stared at him.

“He signed away his rights?””

Marcus looked down.

“No.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then what?””

“He changed his mind.””

The garden suddenly felt silent.

“He told me he wasn’t ready for that responsibility.””

My chest tightened.

“And you?””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“I was ready.””

The tears came before I could stop them.

I turned away.

Because I didn’t want him to see.

But Marcus had always seen.

Even when I thought I was hiding.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then I felt his hand gently touch my shoulder.

Not forcing.

Not demanding.

Just there.

The same way he had always been.

“I know you were looking for something you never had.””

I wiped my face.

“I thought if he came back, maybe everything would make sense.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s normal.””

“But it doesn’t.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Sometimes the people who leave come back wanting forgiveness before they understand the damage.””

I looked at him.

“What about the wedding?””

Marcus glanced toward the building.

“I don’t know.””

That surprised me.

“You don’t?””

He shook his head.

“Maya, I didn’t pay for your wedding so I could control your choices.””

I looked at the invoice.

“Then why?””

His eyes softened.

“Because you were happy.””

The answer was so simple.

So honest.

That it hurt.

“I saw you excited,” he continued.

“You were planning every detail. You were glowing. And I wanted to give you a beautiful day.””

I covered my mouth.

“I ruined it.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You discovered something important.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Marcus looked at it.

“Are you going to answer?””

I hesitated.

Then I picked up.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Is this Maya Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel Brooks. I’m calling about Marcus.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Marcus.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

The voice continued.

“I’m not sure how much you know, but I found something in my father’s old records.””

I gripped the phone.

“What kind of records?””

A pause.

Then the man said:

“Records about the adoption paperwork Marcus mentioned.””

I felt the world shift.

“What about it?””

His voice lowered.

“Because according to these documents, Marcus didn’t just try to adopt you.””

I stopped breathing.

“What do you mean?””

The man hesitated.

Then said:

“Your biological father fought to stop it.””

Marcus’s face changed.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not for himself.

For me.

The call continued.

“And Maya…”

I pressed the phone closer.

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

A pause.

“Your biological father didn’t come back because he missed you.””

I looked at Marcus.

May you like

Daniel’s final words came through the speaker.

“He came back because he found out Marcus was finally planning to tell you the truth.””
