Chapter 4: The Mother They Erased
Daniel finally sat down.
For the first time since Vincent had known him, he looked small.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like the weight of what he had hidden was finally heavier than his ability to carry it.
Vanessa remained standing.
She refused to look afraid.
But Vincent noticed something.
People who were innocent usually wanted answers.
People who were guilty wanted control.
Vanessa wanted control.
“Start talking,” Vincent said.
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“Claire was struggling after Lily was born.””
Vincent listened carefully.
“Struggling how?””
“She was tired. Overwhelmed.””
“That happens to mothers.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Daniel looked up.
Vincent’s voice softened slightly.
“You know what people told you. That’s different.””
Daniel looked away.
The silence told Vincent he was getting closer.
“Claire loved Lily,” Daniel said.
The statement surprised him.
“Then why did you tell her she wasn’t her daughter?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
“Children don’t hear intentions. They hear words.””
Daniel lowered his head.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You’re making Daniel the villain without knowing the whole story.””
Vincent looked at her.
“Then give me the whole story.””
She hesitated.
That hesitation said everything.
Vincent walked closer.
“Where is Claire?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
Then closed.
Daniel answered.
“She’s in a care facility.””
Vincent stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked miserable.
“She had an accident.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
Vincent felt his stomach tighten.
Six years.
The same age as Lily.
“An accident caused by what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“I don’t know.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know?””
Daniel stood suddenly.
“I was told she lost control of the car.””
“Who told you?””
Another silence.
Vincent looked at Vanessa.
And this time, she looked away.
That was all he needed.
He walked back to the trunk.
Inside was the photograph.
The one turned face down.
He picked it up.
Nobody stopped him.
He turned it over.
The picture showed Claire holding baby Lily.
They were smiling.
Happy.
Alive.
Vincent stared at it.
Because he knew that smile.
It wasn’t the smile of a woman planning to abandon her child.
It was the smile of a mother who believed she had a future.
“Why was this hidden?””
Daniel whispered.
“Because Vanessa thought it was better.””
Vincent slowly turned.
“Better?””
Daniel looked desperate.
“She said Claire couldn’t be around Lily.””
“Why?””
“She said Claire was unstable.””
Vincent looked at Vanessa.
“And you believed her?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
The answer was obvious.
Vincent felt anger rising.
Not loud anger.
The dangerous kind.
The kind that made him quieter.
“You allowed someone else to erase your daughter’s mother.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Losing Lily.””
Vincent stared at him.
“You were so afraid of losing your daughter that you let her believe she had already lost herself.””
Daniel looked broken.
For a moment, Vincent saw something human in him.
Regret.
But regret did not erase damage.
It only admitted it existed.
From the other room came a small sound.
Lily.
Vincent immediately turned.
He walked toward the doorway.
Before he reached it, Vanessa spoke.
“Vincent.””
He stopped.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
Slowly, he turned.
Vanessa’s face was pale.
“What?””
She looked toward the trunk.
Then back at him.
“Claire didn’t just disappear.””
Vincent waited.
“She tried to come back.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“After the accident.””
Vincent felt his heartbeat change.
“Why didn’t I know that?””
Neither Daniel nor Vanessa answered.
And suddenly, Vincent understood.
They hadn’t just hidden a woman.
They had hidden a mother.
They had hidden a child’s connection to her own past.
They had hidden the truth from him.
All these years.
Vincent stepped closer.
His voice was almost a whisper.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
Because now she knew.
The man standing in front of her wasn’t just angry.
He was searching.
And Vincent Ashford had spent his entire life finding what people tried to bury.
Behind him, Lily waited.

Behind Vanessa, the open trunk revealed more secrets.
And somewhere, six years of lies were finally beginning to fall apart.
