Chapter 9: The Last Person Who Knew
Vincent stared at the key in his hand.
A small piece of metal.
That was all it was.
But somehow it carried the weight of years of pain, secrets, and unanswered questions.
Claire sat quietly beside him, staring at the floor.
“My sister’s name was Emily,” she said.
Nobody spoke.
“Emily knew something was wrong before I did.””
Vincent looked at her.
“What did she know?””
Claire took a slow breath.
“She knew Vanessa was manipulating Daniel.””
Daniel looked away.
“You knew Emily?””
“Yes.””
Vincent turned toward him.
“And you never mentioned her?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“She was angry with me.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Emily blamed me for what happened to Claire.””
Claire looked at him.
“She should have.””
The honesty in her voice surprised everyone.
Even Daniel.
Vincent studied the room.
The pieces were coming together, but there were still missing parts.
“Where did Emily go?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“When was the last time you saw her?””
“The day after my accident.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.””
Claire looked down.
“After I woke up, I couldn’t remember everything. I was confused. I didn’t know where Lily was.””
Her voice cracked.
“Emily was the one who found out Daniel had taken Lily away.””
Daniel flinched.
“I didn’t take her.””
Claire looked at him.
“You kept her from me.””
Daniel had no response.
“Emily told me she was going to fix it,” Claire continued.
“She said she had proof.””
Vincent looked at the key.
“What kind of proof?””
Claire shook her head.
“She never told me.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed softly.
Everyone looked at her.
“You all sound so convinced.””
Vincent turned.
“Because you’re not denying anything.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I’m denying that Claire is telling the truth.””
“Then tell us yours.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at Vincent.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
Vincent almost smiled.
“Everyone says that right before they explain why they destroyed it.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Claire was unstable.””
Claire’s eyes filled with anger.
“I was injured.””
“You were unpredictable.””
“I was a mother trying to get my daughter back.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You were going to ruin Daniel’s life.””
Vincent caught the words.
Not Claire’s.
Not Lily’s.
Daniel’s life.
That was the priority.
“Because of the money,” Vincent said.
Vanessa went silent.
And silence was confirmation.
Daniel looked sick.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
“How long did you know she was after the money?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Daniel—”
“How long?””
His voice cracked.
For the first time, Vincent saw Daniel truly angry.
Not afraid.
Angry.
Vanessa looked away.
“Since before we got married.””
The confession landed like a blow.
Daniel stepped back.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still…”
He couldn’t finish.
Vincent watched him.
Because this was the moment when Daniel finally realized the truth.
Vanessa had never loved the family.
She loved what the family provided.
Power.
Security.
Status.
Daniel sat down.
“I ruined everything.””
Vincent looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer was painful.
But necessary.
Daniel looked up.
Vincent continued.
“But admitting it is the first honest thing you’ve done in years.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire noticed something.
The key.
“Wait.””
Vincent looked at her.
“What?””
“That key.””
She pointed.
“Emily didn’t give it to me.””
Vincent looked down.
“She gave it to someone else.””
“Who?””
Claire’s face changed.
“Someone she trusted.””
A cold feeling moved through Vincent.
“Who?””
Claire swallowed.
“Your old security chief.””
Vincent froze.
“Marcus?””
Claire nodded.
“Emily said he was the only person who could get the truth to you.””
Vincent immediately reached for his phone.
Then stopped.
Because he remembered.
Marcus had retired five years ago.
Nobody had heard from him since.
But Vincent knew something.
Marcus never disappeared.
Not without a reason.
He looked at the key again.
“Find him.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You think he’s alive?””
Vincent stared at the note.
“Yes.””
His voice was certain.
“Because whoever left this wanted me to find it.””
Two hours later, Vincent stood in front of an old storage building outside the city.
The key opened the door.
Inside was darkness.
Dust.
Silence.
And evidence.
Boxes lined the walls.
Documents.
Photographs.
Records.
Everything carefully preserved.
Claire walked in behind him.
“Oh my God.””
Vincent opened the nearest box.
Inside were copies of financial records.
Emails.
Documents.
Proof.
But then he found something else.
A video camera.
An old one.
And a note attached.
For Vincent.
His hands tightened.
He turned it over.
Inside was a recording.
The last message from Marcus.
Vincent pressed play.
Marcus appeared on the small screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Vincent, if you’re watching this, it means the truth finally reached you.””
Vincent stood frozen.
Marcus continued.
“I should have told you years ago.””
The recording shook slightly.
“I failed Claire. I failed Lily. And I failed you.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Marcus looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.””
Vincent felt his chest tighten.
“She had help.””
The screen flickered.
Then Marcus said the one thing nobody expected.
“The person who helped her was someone inside your own family.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Vincent looked around the room.
Daniel.
Claire.
The empty space where Vanessa had been.
Because Vanessa had left.
And suddenly Vincent understood.
May you like
The truth was no longer buried.
But the person who buried it was still running.
