Chapter 7: The Lie Beneath the Lie
The room went silent after Vanessa’s words.
Ask Claire what really happened the night she disappeared.
Vincent had heard countless accusations in his life.
He had watched competitors twist facts, employees hide mistakes, and people rewrite history when the truth became inconvenient.
But this was different.
Because Vanessa wasn’t speaking like someone revealing a secret.
She was speaking like someone who had been waiting for the perfect moment to use one.
Vincent turned toward Claire.
Her face had gone pale.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
For a second, Vincent saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
And there was a difference.
“What is she talking about?”” he asked.
Claire looked down.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
That caught Vincent’s attention.
Because Daniel wasn’t defending Vanessa.
He was warning her.
Vanessa noticed it too.
Her confident expression slipped slightly.
“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent now.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I know what happened.””
“Do you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Do you really?””
The tension between them was immediate.
Vincent watched carefully.
Something was wrong.
For years, he had believed Daniel and Vanessa were united.
A team.
But standing there, he saw something else.
Two people connected by a secret.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
“Everybody is going to tell me the truth tonight,” Vincent said.
His voice left no room for argument.
“Starting now.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire took a slow breath.
“I did disappear.””
Lily looked up at her.
Claire immediately reached for her hand.
“Not because I wanted to leave you.””
Her voice shook.
“I need you to understand that.””
Lily nodded slowly.
Vincent stayed quiet.
Claire looked at him.
“The night of the accident, I was going to take Lily and leave.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vincent noticed.
“Leave where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“From who?””
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“From Vanessa.””
Vanessa laughed.
A short, bitter sound.
“Of course.””
Vincent looked at her.
“Why?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because I found out what she had been doing.””
Daniel looked away.
Vincent turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Daniel whispered, “Yes.””
The answer landed harder than any confession.
“You knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“Claire found financial records.””
“What records?””
Claire answered.
“Money being moved from Daniel’s company.””
Vincent’s expression changed.
“Fraud?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
Vanessa immediately spoke.
“That’s not what happened.””
Vincent ignored her.
“Daniel?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I made mistakes.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not mistakes.””
Her voice became stronger.
“Choices.””
The word cut deep.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I was desperate.””
Vincent stared at him.
“For what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“For Vanessa.””
The room froze.
Vincent looked at Vanessa.
She remained silent.
That was enough.
“Explain.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I forced him.””
“No.””
Vincent stepped closer.
“I’m acting like you know more than you’re admitting.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You always did think you could read everyone.””
“And I’m wrong?””
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Claire continued.
“I found the records. I told Daniel I was going to report it.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“And then?””
Claire looked down.
“Then my car was pushed off the road.””
Lily gasped softly.
Vincent turned.
“Pushed?””
Claire nodded.
“I don’t remember everything.””
Her voice lowered.
“But I remember Vanessa’s car behind me.””
The room became unbearable.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“You were there.””
“I was trying to help you.””
Vincent looked between them.
“Help?””
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about!””
And there it was.
The panic.
The loss of control.
Vincent had seen enough.
He looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
Daniel looked broken.
“I knew she was scared.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Daniel’s silence answered.
Vincent stepped back.
A lifetime of trust had collapsed in a single evening.
His own judgment.
His own family.
Everything he thought he understood.
But then Claire spoke softly.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vincent’s heart sank.
“What more?””
Claire looked at Lily.
Then at him.
“The reason I came back.””
A pause.
“Was because I found out Lily wasn’t safe.””
Vincent felt anger rise.
“What does that mean?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“It means somebody was trying to make sure she disappeared too.””
The words changed everything.
Daniel looked horrified.
Vanessa looked furious.
And Vincent understood.
This was never just about hiding the past.
It was about protecting the future.
