Chapter 8: The Evidence They Buried
Nobody slept that night.
The Ashford estate had always been a place of celebration.
Tonight, it felt like a battlefield.
Vincent sat in his office with Claire, Daniel, and Vanessa separated around the room.
He had spent years building this space.
A room filled with awards, photographs, and memories.
Now every object felt different.
Because memories could lie.
People could lie.
Even family could lie.
“Start from the beginning,” Vincent said.
Claire nodded.
“The day Lily was born, Vanessa started getting involved in our lives.””
Daniel looked down.
“She helped.””
Claire looked at him.
“At first.””
Vincent noticed the word.
“At first.””
Claire continued.
“She wanted to be around Lily constantly. She said she loved her like family.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“I did.””
Claire looked at her.
“Until you realized Daniel’s company was failing.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vincent turned.
“Your company?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I had debt.””
“How much?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Vincent’s expression hardened.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
Claire continued.
“Vanessa offered help.””
Vincent looked at her.
“And in exchange?””
Claire answered quietly.
“She wanted control.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked ashamed.
“She said she could fix everything.””
Vincent stared at him.
“And you let her?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I was trying to save my family.””
Vincent shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at him.
“You were trying to save your comfort.””
Daniel looked away.
Because he knew it was true.
Claire continued.
“When I found the records, I realized Vanessa wasn’t helping Daniel.””
She paused.
“She was owning him.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You have no proof.””
Vincent looked at her.
“You’re still worried about proof?””
Her expression changed.
Because she knew.
The question wasn’t whether he believed Claire.
The question was whether Vanessa could still escape.
Then Vincent remembered the trunk.
“The evidence.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The trunk.””
Claire’s face changed.
“The trunk?””
Vincent nodded.
“It was filled with your things.””
Claire looked confused.
“I never had that.””
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“I never packed a trunk.””
That stopped him.
Because the trunk was not Claire’s.
It was planted.
A message.
A story someone wanted people to believe.
Vincent stood.
“Where is it?””
Daniel pointed toward the ballroom.
They walked together.
The trunk was still there.
Waiting.
Vincent opened it again.
This time, he looked deeper.
Not at the objects.
At the details.
The blanket.
The clothes.
The photograph.
Everything carefully arranged.
Too carefully.
“This wasn’t hidden,” Vincent said.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“It was staged.””
Claire stepped closer.
“You mean someone wanted you to find it.””
Vincent nodded.
“Yes.””
He picked up the photograph.
“This was never about hiding evidence.””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“It was about creating a story.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Vincent continued.
“A story where Claire abandoned her child.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small envelope taped beneath the trunk.
His breathing stopped.
“What is that?””
Vincent removed it.
Inside was a single item.
A key.
And a note.
Daniel grabbed it.
His face changed as he read it.
“What does it say?”” Vincent asked.
Daniel couldn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
Slowly, Daniel handed him the note.
Vincent read the words.
His expression changed.
Because the message was not from Claire.
It was not from Vanessa.
It was from someone else.
Someone who had been watching.
Someone who knew the truth.
The note said:
I know what happened that night. If anything happens to me, the Ashford family needs to know.
Vincent looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Claire stared at the key.
Then suddenly whispered:
“I do.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Her face had gone pale.
“That key belonged to my sister.””
Vincent froze.
“Your sister?””
Claire nodded.
“She was the only person who believed me.””
A long silence followed.
“Where is she now?”” Vincent asked.
Claire looked at the key in his hand.
“She disappeared.””
The room became completely still.
Because now Vincent understood.
The secret was bigger than Daniel.
Bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than Claire.
May you like
Someone else had been protecting the truth.
And someone else had been trying to bury it.
