Chapter 11: The Photograph That Changed The Past
I stared at the phone.
The image didn’t make sense.
My hand shook slightly.
Not because I was scared.
Because I recognized the moment.
The place.
The night.
Caroline standing beside me.
The old clubhouse behind us.
The same leather jacket I wore.
The same bracelet on my wrist.
But behind us…
A figure.
Someone blurred by the darkness.
Someone whose face I couldn’t see.
Marcus looked over my shoulder.
“What is that?””
I locked the screen.
“Nothing.””
He frowned.
“Bear.””
I looked at him.
“Not here.””
He understood.
Barely.
But he nodded.
I turned toward Samuel.
“You know about this.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“Who is behind us?””
Samuel looked at Caroline.
She looked away.
That was enough.
I felt anger rising.
Not at Samuel.
Not at Daniel.
At everyone.
Everyone had pieces of my life except me.
“Everybody keeps protecting me.””
My voice grew louder.
“But nobody thinks I deserve the truth.””
Caroline stepped closer.
“You do.””
“Then why didn’t I get it?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because the truth almost killed you.””
I stared.
“That’s not your choice.””
“I know.””
The honesty hurt.
She didn’t defend herself.
She just admitted it.
Samuel looked toward the road.
“We don’t have much time.””
I turned.
“Where is the ledger?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
It wasn’t just about Eli.
It was about something everyone was willing to die for.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Hidden.””
I looked at him.
“You know where?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
He smiled.
“You still think this is about finding something.””
“What is it about?””
He looked at me.
“Choosing who you believe.””
I hated that answer.
Before I could respond, a loud engine sound came from the road.
Not motorcycles.
Cars.
Several.
Marcus moved instantly.
“Bear.””
I nodded.
Everyone saw them.
Three vehicles approaching.
More people.
More problems.
Samuel looked at Caroline.
“Take Eli.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You know what happens if they get him.””
Her face changed.
“I’m not leaving Bear.””
The words surprised me.
After twelve years.
After everything.
She still said my name like she trusted me.
Daniel looked toward the vehicles.
“You’re out of time.””
The doors opened.
People stepped out.
Different clothes.
Same cold expressions.
The gas station was surrounded.
One man walked forward.
Older.
Expensive suit.
Calm.
He looked at Daniel.
“You failed.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I handled it.””
The man laughed.
“You exposed everything.””
Then he looked at me.
“Bear.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“The person who has been cleaning up your mistakes.””
I felt my anger rise.
“You don’t know me.””
“Oh, I know you very well.””
He looked at Caroline.
“She always did choose you.””
Caroline’s face changed.
I noticed.
“You know him.””
The man smiled.
“Of course.””
I turned toward her.
“Who is he?””
She whispered:
“Victor.””
The name meant nothing.
But the fear behind it did.
Victor looked at Eli.
“And there he is.””
I moved immediately.
“No.””
Victor stopped.
“You don’t even know what you’re protecting.””
I looked at the boy.
“I know enough.””
Victor shook his head.
“That’s exactly why you’re dangerous.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Victor.””
Everyone looked at him.
Even Victor.
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“This ends here.””
Victor smiled.
“You think you can stop me?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“But he can.””
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel nodded toward me.
“The only person you ever trusted enough to follow.””
I didn’t understand.
Then Victor reached into his jacket.
He pulled out something small.
An old recording device.
He pressed a button.
A voice came through.
My voice.
Twelve years younger.
My own voice saying:
“If anything happens to me, find Caroline.””
I froze.
Nobody spoke.
The recording continued.
“She has the truth.””
Then another voice.
Caroline.
Crying.
“Bear, don’t do this.””
My younger voice answered:
“I have to.””
The recording ended.
I stared at Caroline.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Samuel.
Then Victor.
The missing pieces started moving together.
Not enough.
But enough to hurt.
I turned to Caroline.
“What happened after that recording?””
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
May you like
And said:
“You died that night.””
