The Glove He Never Forgot / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Bracelet That Changed Everything

I looked at Caroline’s wrist.

The bracelet.

Old leather.

Faded metal.

The same one I remembered from years ago.

The one I thought belonged to her.

But Daniel’s words stayed in my mind.

It was yours.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Before Caroline disappeared, you gave it to her.””

I remembered.

A small piece of memory.

A night beside motorcycles.

A promise.

A bracelet.

But I never understood why she kept it.

“She told me it was hers.””

Daniel smiled.

“She wanted you to believe that.””

Caroline looked away.

And that hurt.

Because I needed her to deny it.

I needed her to say Daniel was lying.

She didn’t.

“Caroline.””

Her eyes met mine.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

Eli looked confused.

“Mom?””

Caroline immediately turned toward him.

“I’m sorry.””

The boy looked like the world had shifted beneath him.

I knew that feeling.

Because mine had.

The stranger near the SUV stepped forward again.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

He ignored the question.

“Daniel, we need to move.””

Daniel nodded.

Then looked at me.

“You still don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You understand that Caroline lied.””

A pause.

“But you don’t understand why.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

Daniel looked at the riders.

“At least now everyone gets to hear.””

I hated how much he enjoyed this.

He wasn’t exposing secrets.

He was performing.

“Years ago,” Daniel said, “our club was struggling.””

Marcus looked away.

Everyone remembered.

“We needed money.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You refused certain offers.””

“Yes.””

“Because you had morals.””

I didn’t answer.

“And I respected that.””

A pause.

“Until I realized morals don’t keep people alive.””

Caroline shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Daniel ignored her.

“I made deals.””

The riders went silent.

“Without telling anyone.””

Marcus whispered:

“You betrayed us.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I saved us.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You used us.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

I stepped between them.

“Keep going.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Caroline found out.””

I looked at her.

“And?””

“She found the records.””

“The ledger.””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“She thought she could expose me.””

Caroline’s voice was quiet.

“I thought I could stop you.””

Daniel smiled.

“You couldn’t.””

A silence followed.

Then I asked:

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s the question you should have asked twelve years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“I did.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You asked where Caroline went.””

A pause.

“You never asked why your own memory of that night was incomplete.””

The words hit me.

I felt something shift.

Because he was right.

There were pieces missing.

A conversation.

A moment.

A reason.

I looked at Caroline.

She looked terrified.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want you to remember.””

My voice dropped.

“Remember what?””

She opened her eyes.

“The accident.””

Nobody moved.

“What accident?””

Her voice broke.

“The night you found me.””

My heart raced.

“I didn’t find you.””

“Yes, you did.””

I stared.

“No.””

“You did.””

The gas station disappeared around me.

The motorcycles.

The road.

The people.

Everything.

I only heard her.

“You came after me, Bear.””

My breathing changed.

“You were there.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Caroline stepped closer.

“You were there when Daniel tried to take the ledger.””

My hands went cold.

“You were there when everything went wrong.””

I looked at Daniel.

His expression was unreadable.

Then Caroline said the sentence that changed my entire understanding of the past.

“You didn’t forget because time passed.””

A pause.

“You forgot because someone made sure you would.””

The stranger near the SUV suddenly looked toward the road.

“We have to leave.””

Daniel ignored him.

I looked at Caroline.

“Who?””

She stared at me.

And whispered:

“The person who saved your life.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from inside Daniel’s jacket.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

For the first time all morning, Daniel looked afraid.

He lowered the phone.

And looked directly at me.

“Bear.””

May you like

A pause.

“You need to see who just arrived.””
