Chapter 7: The Brother Who Came Back
For twelve years, I imagined what I would say if Daniel Cross ever stood in front of me again.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined finally getting the answers that kept me awake at night.
But when he actually appeared beside that old roadside gas station, wearing the same calm expression he always wore, I felt something worse than anger.
I felt disappointment.
Because some people don’t become strangers.
They reveal they always were.
Daniel stood near the road, hands relaxed at his sides.
Older.
Grayer.
But still carrying the same confidence that used to make people follow him.
The same confidence that once made me call him my brother.
Marcus stepped beside me.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Bear…”
I didn’t look away.
“I see him.””
Daniel smiled.
“Been a long time.””
Nobody answered.
The silence was louder than any engine.
Finally, I spoke.
“You’re alive.””
Daniel tilted his head.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
My jaw tightened.
“You let us believe you were dead.””
A small smile disappeared from his face.
“I let people believe what they needed to believe.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked around.
At the motorcycles.
At the riders.
At the gas station.
Then at the van.
“You brought everyone.””
I stepped forward.
“They came because they trust me.””
Daniel looked amused.
“No.””
A pause.
“They came because they don’t know the truth.””
The words hit the group.
I felt the tension change.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at Caroline’s van.
“She always was good at making herself the victim.””
Caroline reacted immediately.
“Don’t.””
Her voice carried something I had never heard before.
Hatred.
Daniel smiled.
“There she is.””
I moved closer.
“You don’t get to talk about her like that.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Still protecting her.””
“Yes.””
The answer came without hesitation.
Daniel studied me.
“You really have no idea.””
“No idea about what?””
He took one slow step forward.
“About what Caroline did.””
The street went quiet.
I looked toward the van.
Caroline said nothing.
That bothered me.
“Caroline?””
No answer.
Daniel smiled.
“Ask her.””
I turned back.
“What did you do?””
The van remained silent.
My chest tightened.
Because I didn’t want to believe Daniel.
But I also couldn’t ignore Caroline’s silence.
Eli looked between us.
“Mom?””
Caroline finally spoke.
“Bear, don’t listen to him.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“That’s always been her answer.””
I clenched my fists.
“Enough.””
Daniel stopped.
For the first time, his expression became serious.
“Do you remember the night she disappeared?””
The question landed hard.
“Yes.””
“You remember where you were?””
I stared.
“At the clubhouse.””
“No.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You weren’t there.””
The memory flashed.
The phone call.
The empty parking lot.
The feeling that something was wrong.
“I was looking for her.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
He pointed toward the van.
“She wanted you to look for her.””
Caroline’s voice changed.
“Daniel, stop.””
But he continued.
“She knew you would.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Eli.
Then back at me.
“Because she knew you would protect him.””
My eyes moved to the boy.
Eli.
The boy who had only wanted to return a glove.
The boy caught in something much bigger than him.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Tell him, Caroline.””
Nothing.
“Tell him why you ran.””
I looked toward the van.
“Caroline.””
The door opened slightly.
Her hand appeared.
Shaking.
“Because I was scared.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Of who?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Of you.””
Everyone froze.
My face changed.
“What?””
Caroline’s voice cracked.
“Not because you would hurt me.””
“Then why?””
“Because I knew you would try to fix it.””
I didn’t understand.
Daniel did.
He smiled.
“She knew you would go after the wrong people.””
I looked at him.
“You’re saying I was protecting you?””
“No.””
Daniel’s smile faded.
“I’m saying you were protecting a lie.””
A sharp sound came from behind us.
A motorcycle falling.
Everyone turned.
One of my riders had dropped his bike.
He was staring toward the road.
“Bear…”
I followed his eyes.
Another vehicle had stopped nearby.
A black SUV.
Then another.
My stomach tightened.
Daniel looked calm.
Too calm.
“You took too long.””
I stared at him.
“What did you do?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Caroline.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Caroline’s voice became desperate.
“Bear, get Eli away from here.””
I stepped toward Daniel.
“Who are they?””
Daniel looked at the vehicles.
“They’re the reason Caroline disappeared.””
The doors opened.
Men stepped out.
Not wearing colors.
Not carrying signs.
Just watching.
Marcus moved closer.
“Bear.””
I nodded.
I knew.
This wasn’t about a missing woman anymore.
This was about everyone standing in that parking lot.
Daniel looked at me one final time.
And said:
“You wanted the truth.””
May you like
A faint smile crossed his face.
“Now you’re going to get all of it.””
