Chapter 14: The Truth Nobody Wanted
Nobody spoke after the recording ended.
Because the truth was worse than the lies.
The lies at least had a shape.
Someone was guilty.
Someone was hiding.
Someone was responsible.
But the truth was different.
The truth was that I had known.
Somewhere deep inside, I had known.
I looked at Caroline.
“Why?””
Her face collapsed.
“I didn’t want you to remember it that way.””
“That way?””
I held up the recorder.
“My own voice said not to trust you.””
She looked down.
“Because you recorded that before you knew the whole truth.””
I stared.
“Then explain.””
She took a breath.
And for the first time, she stopped hiding.
“That night, I found the ledger.””
Everyone listened.
“Daniel was making deals.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I was.””
Caroline looked at him.
“You were destroying everything.””
He looked away.
“I thought I was protecting it.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Nobody interrupted.
“Victor wanted the ledger because it contained evidence.””
I looked at the box.
“Evidence against him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did my recording say not to trust you?””
Caroline’s eyes filled.
“Because you thought I betrayed you.””
The words hurt.
“Why would I think that?””
She looked at Samuel.
Her father stepped forward.
“Because of me.””
Everyone turned.
Samuel’s voice was quiet.
“I changed the story.””
My expression hardened.
“What?””
Samuel looked ashamed.
“When you survived, your memory was damaged.””
I nodded slowly.
“And?””
“And Victor wanted you gone.””
Samuel continued.
“I made a deal.””
Caroline looked at him.
“Dad.””
“I know.””
He closed his eyes.
“I made him believe you had no memory of the ledger.””
My hands tightened.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“I thought I was saving you.””
I looked around.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had a version of saving me.
But nobody asked what I wanted.
“What happened to my memory?””
Daniel answered.
“I did it.””
Everyone turned.
My eyes narrowed.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“I helped remove the pieces that would lead Victor to the ledger.””
“You erased my life.””
“I saved it.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Daniel accepted the anger.
“I know.””
That made it worse.
Because he wasn’t defending himself.
He knew.
Caroline stepped closer.
“I was there.””
I looked at her.
“When?””
“The night you woke up.””
My breathing slowed.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you leave?””
Her tears fell.
“Because when you looked at me…”
She stopped.
“When you looked at me, you didn’t know who I was.””
The words crushed me.
“I thought I lost you.””
She nodded.
“I thought so too.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Eli walked forward.
“Bear.””
I looked down.
He held something in his hand.
A small piece of metal.
“What is that?””
He looked at Caroline.
“She gave it to me.””
My expression changed.
Caroline nodded.
“I kept it because I knew one day you would find the truth.””
I took it.
It was part of the old bracelet.
The one I thought belonged to her.
But now I saw the engraving.
My initials.
Not hers.
I looked at Caroline.
“You wore this for twelve years.””
She nodded.
“Because you gave it to me.””
A tear moved down her face.
“And because I promised I would bring you back.””
The moment was interrupted.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone dropped.
The metal box flew from my hand.
Victor’s men had found us.
The truth was no longer hidden.
And now they were willing to kill for it.
Marcus shouted:
“Move!””
The riders reacted instantly.
Motorcycles roared.
The quarry exploded with sound.
I grabbed Eli.
Caroline grabbed my arm.
For the first time in twelve years…
We moved together.
But as we escaped, I saw Victor standing beside the fallen box.
He picked it up.
And smiled.
May you like
Because he wasn’t trying to stop us.
He was trying to make us run.
