Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Walter was gone.

The realization hit Bear harder than the gunshot.

The old homeless man.

The man who brought him to the cemetery.

The man who carried the badge.

The man who claimed he wanted the truth.

Gone.

Bear stared into the darkness.

“Bear: Walter.””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked devastated.

Caleb looked angry.

Elias looked like he already knew.

Bear turned toward him.

“Bear: You knew.””

Elias shook his head.

“No.””

“Bear: You suspected.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Bear’s face hardened.

“Bear: And you said nothing.””

Elias looked down.

“Elias: Because I wasn’t sure.””

Bear looked toward the path.

“Bear: You’re never sure.””

The words hurt.

Elias accepted them.

A sound came from behind the cemetery wall.

Footsteps.

Walter emerged.

But he was different.

No fear.

No shaking hands.

No tired old man.

He walked with purpose.

In his hand was a small device.

Bear stared.

“Bear: You.””

Walter looked at him.

The sadness in his eyes was real.

That made it worse.

“Walter: I’m sorry.””

Bear stepped forward.

“Bear: Sorry?””

His voice echoed.

“You lied to me.””

Walter nodded.

“Yes.””

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew where Elias was.””

Walter looked at Elias.

“Yes.””

Bear’s hands shook.

“Bear: Why?””

Walter looked at the device.

“Walter: Because someone had to bring you here.””

Bear laughed.

“Bear: So this was planned?””

Walter looked at his father.

“Yes.””

Everyone froze.

Bear looked at his father.

“Bear: You planned this?””

His father looked away.

“No.””

Walter answered.

“Walter: He did.””

He pointed at Elias.

The cemetery went silent.

Bear turned.

“Bear: Elias?””

Elias looked stunned.

“No.””

Walter shook his head.

“You don’t remember.””

Elias stepped forward.

“Elias: Remember what?””

Walter looked at him.

“The night your brother disappeared.””

Elias froze.

Walter continued.

“You didn’t save him.””

The words hung there.

“You helped him.””

Bear looked at Elias.

“Bear: What does that mean?””

Elias’s face changed.

Fragments.

Memories.

Pain.

He touched his head.

“Elias: I…”

Walter stepped closer.

“You weren’t protecting him from death.””

A pause.

“You were protecting him from himself.””

Bear stared.

Nobody spoke.

Walter pressed the device.

A recording began.

Young voices.

Twenty years ago.

A conversation.

Elias’s voice.

His brother’s voice.

Bear listened.

His own past came alive.

Brother: “If Bear finds out, he’ll destroy everything.””

Elias: “Then he can’t know.””

Brother: “You’re willing to erase yourself?””

Elias: “I’m willing to save him.””

The recording ended.

Bear looked at Elias.

“Bear: You knew.””

Elias looked broken.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Bear: What?””

Elias swallowed.

“I knew your brother wasn’t betrayed.””

Bear stared.

“Bear: Then why let me hate him?””

Elias closed his eyes.

“Because your father asked me to.””

Everyone turned.

Bear looked at his father.

“Bear: You?””

His father stepped forward.

“I needed you angry.””

Bear froze.

The same words.

The same truth.

His father continued.

“Because anger kept you away from the organization.””

Bear’s voice became quiet.

“You destroyed my life to protect me.””

His father nodded.

“Yes.””

Bear looked around.

Everyone who loved him had lied.

Everyone who protected him had hurt him.

Then Walter spoke.

“Walter: There is one thing you still don’t know.””

Bear looked at him.

“What?””

Walter looked at the grave.

“The person controlling the organization…”

He paused.

“…was never your father.””

The cemetery went silent.

Walter looked at Bear.

“It was someone who learned from him.””

Bear felt cold.

“Who?””

Walter looked at the badge.

Then at Bear.

“The only person your father trusted completely.””

Bear slowly understood.

“No.””

Walter nodded.

“Yes.””

Bear turned.

Everyone followed his eyes.

The person standing closest to the evidence.

The person who had guided them.

The person who had always acted like an ally.

Caleb.

May you like

Caleb looked at Bear.

And smiled.
