Chapter 7: The Grave Beneath the Lie
The shadow behind the cemetery gate did not move.
It simply watched.
Bear stared through the rain, his phone still glowing in his hand.
The warning message remained on the screen.
STOP DIGGING, OR YOU’LL BURY YOURSELF NEXT.
For years, Bear had faced men who wanted to hurt him.
Rivals.
Enemies.
People who hid behind weapons and threats.
But this was different.
This was someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.
His past.
“Bear: Who else knows we’re here?””
Nobody answered.
Bear slowly turned.
“Bear: I asked a question.””
Marcus looked at Caleb.
Caleb looked at Elias.
That was enough.
Bear’s face hardened.
“Bear: All of you.””
The accusation hung between them.
Elias stepped forward.
“Elias: Bear, listen.””
“Bear: No.””
His voice was quiet.
That made it more dangerous.
“Bear: For twenty years, I carried the name of a traitor in my head. I buried someone I hated. I destroyed friendships. I watched my club fall apart.””
He pointed at the grave.
“Bear: And every single one of you knew there was another story.””
Elias looked away.
Bear nodded slowly.
“Bear: That’s what I thought.””
Caleb stepped forward.
“Caleb: I didn’t know everything.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: You’re starting to sound like everyone else.””
Caleb accepted the anger.
“Caleb: But I know enough to tell you this.””
He pointed toward the grave.
“Caleb: Whoever is buried there was never supposed to be found.””
The figure outside the gate moved slightly.
Bear noticed.
“Bear: Who is that?””
Caleb’s expression changed.
“Caleb: Someone who wants the truth buried again.””
The unknown person stepped closer.
The rain covered their features.
Bear reached inside his jacket.
Elias immediately stopped him.
“Elias: Not here.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
The words hurt.
Elias didn’t argue.
Instead, he looked toward the grave.
“Elias: Open it.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus stared.
“Marcus: Elias.””
Elias kept his eyes on Bear.
“Elias: He deserves to know.””
Bear studied him.
“Bear: Why the change?””
Elias took a slow breath.
“Elias: Because I spent twenty years watching my brother live with a lie that wasn’t his.””
The rain fell harder.
Bear looked at the grave.
Then at the others.
Then back at the stone.
He walked forward.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Walter followed.
“Walter: Bear…”
Bear didn’t stop.
“Bear: No more secrets.””
They reached the grave.
The old earth was soaked.
The headstone was cracked at the bottom.
Caleb pointed.
“Caleb: There.””
Bear looked.
A small metal ring was hidden beneath the stone.
Not part of the grave.
Something placed there.
Waiting.
Bear pulled it.
A hidden compartment opened beneath the headstone.
Inside was a leather folder.
Untouched.
Protected from the rain.
Bear stared.
“Bear: How?””
Caleb looked away.
“Caleb: Someone wanted this found.””
Bear opened it.
Inside were documents.
Old photographs.
Club records.
Names.
Dates.
Evidence.
His hands moved faster as he searched.
Then he stopped.
One photograph caught his attention.
Three brothers.
Younger.
Standing together.
But written on the back were four words.
*THE NIGHT WE LOST EVERYTHING.*
Bear flipped through the papers.
His eyes widened.
“Bear: This isn’t possible.””
Elias stepped closer.
“Elias: What?””
Bear held up the document.
A membership record.
Three names.
Not two.
Three.
And the third name was Caleb’s.
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: You were part of the club?””
Caleb nodded.
“Caleb: Before you were old enough to lead it.””
Bear’s confusion grew.
“Bear: Then why did nobody tell me?””
Marcus answered.
“Marcus: Because your father ordered us not to.””
The world seemed to stop.
Bear slowly looked at Marcus.
“Bear: My father?””
Nobody moved.
The rain continued.
“Bear: My father died before I joined.””
Caleb’s expression turned cold.
“Caleb: That’s what you were told.””
Bear felt the ground shift beneath him.
Every person he trusted.
Every story he remembered.
Every piece of his life.
Suddenly had a question mark.
A sound interrupted them.
A branch snapping.
Everyone turned.
The shadow at the gate was gone.
But something else remained.
Footprints.
Fresh footprints leading toward the grave.
Bear followed them with his eyes.
They stopped exactly beside him.
Then continued away.
As if someone had been standing behind him the entire time.
Caleb whispered:
“He was here.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: Who?””
Caleb stared at the footprints.
“The man who started all of this.””
Bear tightened his grip on the documents.
“Bear: Give me a name.””
Caleb hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Caleb: Your father.””
