Chapter 6: The Man Who Wore the Patch
The figure walked through the cemetery gate.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned every inch of ground beneath his boots.
Rain rolled off his black leather jacket.
On his shoulder was an old biker patch.
The same patch Bear had spent twenty years protecting.
The same symbol that represented brotherhood.
Honor.
Family.
Except now it represented something else.
A lie.
Bear stared.
His breathing became heavier.
“Bear: No.””
The man stopped.
A small smile appeared.
“Man: You always did hate impossible things.””
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
That voice.
Older.
Rougher.
But familiar.
Too familiar.
Elias stepped forward.
“Elias: You shouldn’t be here.””
The man looked at him.
“Man: Neither should you.””
The two stared at each other.
Twenty years of anger.
Twenty years of secrets.
Standing in the rain.
Bear looked between them.
“Bear: Somebody explain what’s happening.””
Nobody spoke.
Bear’s patience disappeared.
“Bear: NOW.””
The man looked at Bear.
“Man: You really don’t remember me?””
Bear’s jaw tightened.
“Bear: I remember every person who hurt me.””
The man smiled sadly.
“Man: That’s the problem.””
He removed his gloves.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Walter immediately stepped back.
“Walter: Don’t.””
The man stopped.
He looked at Walter.
“Man: You still carry guilt after all these years.””
Walter’s face went pale.
Bear noticed.
“Bear: Walter?””
The old man looked down.
“Walter: I was there.””
Bear turned.
“Bear: Where?””
Walter’s voice shook.
“The night it happened.””
Silence.
Bear stared.
“Bear: You told me you didn’t know.””
Walter closed his eyes.
“I told you I didn’t know everything.””
Bear stepped closer.
“Bear: You lied.””
Walter nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
The man in the patch watched.
“Man: Everyone lied to you, Bear.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: Who are you?””
The man took a breath.
Then said:
“Man: The brother you never knew.””
The words hit like thunder.
Bear stopped.
Elias closed his eyes.
Marcus looked away.
Everything suddenly made sense and nothing did.
Bear shook his head.
“Bear: I only had one brother.””
The man looked at Elias.
“Man: You had two.””
The rain covered the silence.
Bear looked at Elias.
“Bear: You knew?””
Elias didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Bear felt something inside him crack.
“Bear: You knew I had another brother?””
Elias looked broken.
“Elias: I knew his name.””
“Bear: And?””
Elias swallowed.
“Elias: And I knew he was the reason I disappeared.””
The stranger stepped forward.
“Man: My name is Caleb.””
Bear stared.
The name meant nothing.
And somehow that scared him more.
“Caleb: Twenty years ago, they gave you a choice.””
Bear frowned.
“Bear: What choice?””
Caleb looked at the grave.
“Caleb: They told you one brother betrayed you.””
His eyes moved to Elias.
“Caleb: They told you one brother died.””
Then back to Bear.
“Caleb: They never told you there was a third.””
A cold feeling moved through Bear.
“Bear: Why?””
Caleb looked at the cracked badge.
“Caleb: Because one of us knew what really happened.””
Bear looked down.
“Bear: Who?””
Caleb did not answer.
Instead, he looked toward the grave.
“Caleb: Open it.””
Everyone froze.
Bear stared.
“Bear: What?””
Caleb pointed at the headstone.
“Caleb: The truth is under that stone.””
Elias immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Bear looked at him.
“Bear: Why?””
Elias’s expression changed.
For the first time that night, Bear saw real fear.
“Elias: Because if you open that grave…”
He stopped.
Bear waited.
“Bear: If I open it, what?””
Elias looked at him.
“Elias: You’ll find out who they actually buried.””
The cemetery went silent.
Bear looked at the grave.
At the badge.
At the three men connected to a secret that destroyed his life.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Walter’s phone.
Bear’s.
He looked at the screen.
One message.
One sentence.
From an unknown sender.
*STOP DIGGING, OR YOU’LL BURY YOURSELF NEXT.*
Bear slowly looked up.
May you like
And behind Caleb, standing beyond the cemetery gate…
another shadow appeared.
