Chapter 2: The Eyes Outside

Adrian Mercer entered his study exactly the way he entered every room.

Calm.

Controlled.

Unreadable.

That was how people saw him.

A man who never lost control.

A man who built an empire because he refused to let emotions make decisions for him.

But Marcus Hale knew better.

Marcus had been Adrian’s security chief for eight years. He had seen him during hostile business negotiations, government investigations, and moments when enemies thought they could intimidate him.

He had never seen Adrian as shaken as he was tonight.

Marcus stood near the large window overlooking the Mercer estate, hands folded behind his back.

The snow outside covered everything in white.

Beautiful.

Quiet.

Deceptive.

“Sir,” Marcus said.

Adrian ignored him for a moment.

His eyes stayed fixed on the hallway leading upstairs.

Toward Lily’s room.

Toward Claire.

“You were awake,” Marcus said.

Adrian finally looked at him.

“So were you.””

Marcus nodded.

“I don’t sleep much when there are unanswered questions.””

Adrian walked toward his desk.

The room was filled with expensive furniture, old books, and family photographs.

But tonight, it didn’t feel like an office.

It felt like a fortress.

A silent alert had reached Adrian.

No phone screen.

No flashing message.

No visible evidence.

Just information.

The kind of information that changed everything.

Someone had been near the property.

Someone had been watching.

Marcus watched Adrian’s expression shift.

The warmth from upstairs vanished.

The father disappeared.

The businessman returned.

“What happened?”” Adrian asked.

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation told Adrian enough.

“Marcus.””

“We found movement near the east side of the estate.””

“How close?””

“Close enough.””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Define close enough.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Close enough that whoever it was wasn’t lost.””

The room went silent.

Adrian looked toward the ceiling.

Lily was sleeping upstairs.

Claire was beside her.

Two people who had nothing to do with the world Adrian lived in.

A world of threats disguised as conversations.

Enemies wearing expensive watches.

People who smiled while calculating exactly how much damage they could cause.

“Was it a break-in?”” Adrian asked.

“No.””

“A threat?””

“We don’t know yet.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

That answer bothered him more than a yes.

Because unknown threats were the most dangerous ones.

“Who knows about Claire?”” he asked.

Marcus studied him.

“Her?””

“Yes.””

“Everyone inside the house knows she’s Lily’s nanny.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Marcus was quiet.

Adrian turned.

“Who knows she’s the only person Lily trusts?””

That was the real question.

Because Adrian understood something Marcus did too.

Information was power.

And someone had information they should not have had.

Marcus looked toward the window.

“The person outside wasn’t trying to get in.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What were they doing?””

“Watching.””

The word hung in the air.

Adrian walked slowly toward the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

A wealthy man in a black suit.

A man who had spent years convincing the world that nothing could hurt him.

But the truth was simple.

Everything that mattered to him was upstairs.

His daughter.

And now the exhausted woman who had somehow brought his daughter back from a place he couldn’t reach.

Marcus noticed the change in him.

“Sir.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Whatever this is, we’ll handle it.””

Adrian finally turned.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Nobody goes near them.””

Marcus nodded.

“I’ll increase security.””

“Quietly.””

“Yes.””

“I don’t want Lily scared.””

Marcus understood.

That was the difference between Adrian Mercer the businessman and Adrian Mercer the father.

The businessman destroyed threats.

The father protected peace.

Marcus moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

“One more thing.””

Adrian looked at him.

“We found something.””

“What?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

“There was a camera.””

Adrian’s face went still.

“Where?””

“Outside the gate.””

For the first time that night, real anger appeared.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Something colder.

Someone had been watching his home.

Watching his daughter.

Watching the one place he believed was safe.

Outside the Mercer estate, beyond the tall iron gates, a figure stood in the falling snow.

The person lowered a camera.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then turned and disappeared into the darkness.

Inside, Adrian stared toward Lily’s room.

His eyes were no longer tired.

They were focused.

Dangerous.

May you like

Because whoever was watching his family had made one mistake.

They had reminded Adrian Mercer of exactly who he was.
