Chapter 9: The Enemy at the Table

Adrian Mercer had spent years believing betrayal was something you could see coming.

A rival company.

A hostile takeover.

A stranger with a hidden agenda.

Those were the threats he understood.

The ones that came from outside.

But Ethan Cross had never stood outside the gates.

He had been inside the building.

Inside the meetings.

Inside the conversations where Adrian discussed his fears, his plans, and his family.

That was what made the betrayal different.

It wasn’t just business.

It was personal.

Adrian stood in his office with Marcus beside him, reviewing every piece of information Daniel Whitmore had brought.

The evidence was undeniable.

Transactions had been altered.

Accounts had been manipulated.

Documents had been moved.

And every path led back to Ethan.

The man Adrian once trusted most.

“The police?”” Marcus asked.

“Not yet.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan knows we’re looking.””

“And?””

“And desperate people make mistakes.””

Marcus nodded.

He understood.

Adrian wasn’t interested in revenge.

Not anymore.

He wanted the truth.

He wanted to know how far this went.

Who else was involved.

How many years of his life had been built on a lie.

But most importantly, he wanted to protect Lily.

And Claire.

That was the part he still didn’t fully understand.

Somehow, somewhere between late nights helping Lily sleep and quiet conversations in the kitchen, Claire Bennett had become someone he cared about protecting.

Not because she was connected to Daniel Whitmore.

Not because she was useful.

Because she was Claire.

And that realization unsettled him more than any enemy.

Downstairs, Claire sat with her father in the library.

Neither of them knew how to begin.

Too many years stood between them.

Too many unanswered questions.

“I used to hate you,” Claire said quietly.

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“I thought you left because you didn’t care.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I left because I cared too much.””

Claire looked away.

“That doesn’t make it better.””

“No.””

The honesty surprised her.

Daniel looked older than she remembered.

Not just physically.

Something inside him had aged.

“I should have found a way to tell you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have trusted you with the truth.””

“Yes.””

“I failed you.””

Claire swallowed.

She had imagined this conversation for years.

She imagined anger.

She imagined screaming.

She imagined finally saying all the things she carried inside.

But now that he was there, all she felt was tired.

“I needed my father,” she whispered.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“I needed you when Mom died. I needed you when people whispered about our family. I needed you when I had to change my name because strangers looked at me like I was guilty.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

Claire wiped her face.

“And you weren’t there.””

The room stayed silent.

Then Daniel said something she never expected.

“You’re right.””

She looked at him.

“I don’t deserve forgiveness because I was scared.””

His voice shook.

“I made a choice for you without letting you make your own.””

Claire stared.

Because that was the first time anyone had said it.

Not an excuse.

Not a defense.

A truth.

Before she could respond, the library door opened.

Adrian stood there.

“We have a problem.””

Claire immediately stood.

“Lily?””

“She’s fine.””

Relief crossed her face.

“Then what?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Ethan knows Daniel is here.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because only a few people knew where I was.””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Then we have a leak.””

Marcus appeared behind him.

“Sir.””

Adrian looked over.

“The front gate cameras just went offline.””

The room went cold.

Claire’s heart raced.

“Is he here?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone knew.

Marcus moved quickly.

“Security team is checking.””

Adrian looked at Claire.

“Take Lily upstairs.””

She nodded.

Then stopped.

“What about you?””

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

“I’m staying.””

Claire understood what he meant.

He wasn’t staying because he wanted a fight.

He was staying because someone had threatened his family.

She reached for his arm before she realized she was doing it.

“Be careful.””

The words surprised both of them.

Adrian looked at her hand.

Then at her.

“I will.””

Claire released him.

She took Lily upstairs.

But halfway up the staircase, Lily stopped.

“Claire?””

“Yes?””

“Is my daddy scared?””

The question broke her heart.

Because Lily noticed everything.

Claire looked down at her.

“Yes.””

Lily frowned.

“But he’s always brave.””

Claire smiled sadly.

“Brave people get scared too.””

“Then why are they brave?””

Claire looked toward Adrian standing below.

“Because they protect people even when they’re scared.””

Lily thought about that.

Then she nodded.

“Daddy protects me.””

Claire smiled.

“Yes, he does.””

What she didn’t say was that Adrian Mercer had started protecting someone else too.

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

Adrian stood in the main hall.

Marcus moved beside him.

“Nothing yet.””

Adrian watched the doors.

“Where’s Ethan?””

“We’re locating him.””

Adrian almost laughed.

Almost.

After all these years, he was finally searching for a man who had been hiding in plain sight.

Then the front door opened.

Not forced.

Not broken.

Opened.

A man stepped inside.

Ethan Cross.

Older than Adrian remembered.

But still wearing the same confident expression.

The same calm smile.

“Adrian.””

The betrayal on Adrian’s face was impossible to hide.

“Ethan.””

Ethan looked around.

“Nice house.””

Marcus moved forward.

Adrian stopped him.

“Why are you here?””

Ethan smiled.

“Because I think we need to talk.””

Adrian stared.

“You have a strange way of asking for conversations.””

Ethan sighed.

“You always were dramatic.””

The words almost sounded friendly.

That was what made them worse.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You ruined a man’s life.””

Ethan’s smile faded slightly.

“Daniel told you his story.””

“He told me the truth.””

“No.””

Ethan looked around.

“He told you what he needed you to believe.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Leave.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“Before you make a mistake.””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“You already made yours.””

For the first time, Ethan looked uncertain.

Because he realized something.

Adrian Mercer was no longer searching for answers.

May you like

He already had them.

And now Ethan was the one trapped.
