Chapter 6: The Secret Adrian Found
Marcus Hale had spent years learning how to deliver bad news.
There was a certain way to do it.
Never too quickly.
Never with unnecessary details.
Give people enough information to understand the danger.
Not enough to make them panic.
But Adrian Mercer was not most people.
He didn’t panic.
He calculated.
That was what made him dangerous.
Marcus stood in the study while Adrian paced slowly across the room.
“Say it again,” Adrian said.
Marcus looked at the file in his hand.
“Claire Bennett wasn’t always Claire Bennett.””
Adrian stopped.
“What does that mean?””
“She changed her last name eight years ago.””
The room went quiet.
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because of her father.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Who was he?””
Marcus placed a document on the desk.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing at first.
Then Adrian recognized it.
His eyes narrowed.
“The accountant?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your company’s former financial controller.””
Adrian stared.
That was impossible.
Daniel Whitmore had been involved in one of the biggest scandals of Adrian’s career.
Ten years ago, millions of dollars disappeared from one of his companies.
The investigation showed financial fraud.
Evidence pointed toward Whitmore.
But before the trial could finish, Daniel disappeared.
His reputation was destroyed.
His family vanished.
The case became a story people stopped talking about.
Until now.
“Claire is his daughter?”” Adrian asked.
“Yes.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Did she know?””
“That’s unclear.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Unclear?””
“She was twenty-two when everything happened. She was living in another state.””
“Family stays connected.””
“Not always.””
Marcus looked at the file.
“Claire changed her name after her father disappeared.””
Adrian turned away.
The pieces were moving.
Someone watching the house.
Someone photographing Claire.
Someone interested in a woman who seemed completely unrelated to his world.
Except she wasn’t.
Not anymore.
“Does Claire have any criminal history?””
“No.””
“Any contact with her father?””
“No evidence.””
“Any reason she would come here?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian stared through the window.
Snow covered the ground outside.
Beautiful.
Quiet.
The same way lies often looked from a distance.
“Find her father.””
Marcus nodded.
“We’re trying.””
“No.””
Adrian looked back.
“Find him.””
The difference was clear.
One was a task.
The other was a demand.
Marcus left.
Adrian remained alone.
But he wasn’t alone for long.
The door opened.
Claire stood there.
She had heard enough.
Not everything.
But enough.
“Daniel Whitmore?””
Adrian froze.
“Claire.””
“Who is Daniel Whitmore?””
The silence answered before he did.
Her face changed.
She already knew.
Not the details.
But enough.
“My father.””
Adrian watched her carefully.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became quieter.
“I mean, I knew his name.””
She stepped inside.
“I knew people hated him.””
Adrian said nothing.
Claire looked at him.
“But nobody ever told me why.””
She laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“I spent my whole life thinking my father was the victim.””
Adrian studied her.
“And now?””
Claire looked down.
“Now I don’t know what to think.””
For the first time, Adrian saw something behind her anger.
Fear.
Not fear of him.
Fear of losing the version of her own life she understood.
“My father disappeared when I was young,” she said.
Her voice trembled.
“He told me one day he would explain everything.””
She swallowed.
“He never did.””
Adrian softened slightly.
“Claire.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked toward the door.
“Does Lily know?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Her answer came quickly.
“Keep it that way.””
Adrian nodded.
“She doesn’t need this.””
Claire looked at him.
For a moment, they weren’t employer and employee.
They were two people who understood what it meant to have someone else’s choices change their lives.
“My father hurt people?””
Adrian didn’t lie.
“I believe he did.””
The honesty hurt.
But Claire appreciated it.
“And the person outside?””
“We don’t know if it’s connected.””
“But you think it is.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
She already knew.
Claire took a deep breath.
“Then I need to know something.””
“What?””
“Do you still trust me?””
The question caught him.
Because Adrian Mercer trusted almost nobody.
But somehow, the answer came easier than expected.
“Yes.””
Claire looked surprised.
“Even after finding out who my father was?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian glanced toward the hallway.
Toward Lily’s room.
“Because my daughter knows who you are.””
Claire’s eyes softened.
“And you believe her?””
Adrian nodded.
“More than anyone.””
For the first time since the truth came out, Claire felt like she could breathe.
But neither of them noticed the security camera feed changing downstairs.
Neither of them saw the new image appearing.
A photograph.
Taken that same morning.
Claire walking beside Lily.
And behind them, reflected faintly in a car window—
May you like
A man watching.
A man who had been waiting years for Daniel Whitmore’s daughter to return.
