Chapter 4: The Picture in the Snow

Adrian Mercer had spent his entire adult life understanding enemies.

That was what made him successful.

People thought power came from money.

They were wrong.

Money opened doors.

Information kept them open.

Adrian built his empire because he knew what people wanted, what they feared, and what they were willing to do when nobody was watching.

But the person outside his gate bothered him for one reason.

He didn’t know what they wanted.

And Adrian hated uncertainty.

Marcus stood across from him in the private security room beneath the estate.

The room was hidden from guests.

No family photographs.

No expensive decorations.

Just monitors, reports, and information.

A place where Adrian allowed himself to see the world as it really was.

“Anything else?”” Adrian asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“Not yet.””

“Not yet isn’t an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

Adrian stared at him.

Marcus didn’t flinch.

That was why Adrian trusted him.

Most people feared his anger.

Marcus respected the responsibility behind it.

“The person outside wasn’t aggressive,” Marcus said.

Adrian looked at him.

“Explain.””

“They stayed outside the gate. No attempt to enter. No attempt to contact anyone.””

“Then why take pictures?””

Marcus paused.

“Because they wanted something.””

Adrian leaned back.

“Or someone.””

The silence confirmed the thought.

Adrian looked at the security footage.

A figure.

A camera.

A moment frozen in time.

Not enough information.

Not enough answers.

He hated that.

“Find out who it is.””

“We’re working on it.””

“Faster.””

Marcus nodded.

Then he looked toward the door.

“Sir.””

“What?””

“There’s something you should consider.””

Adrian waited.

“The timing.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“The timing?””

“This happened right after Claire became close to Lily.””

Adrian didn’t respond.

Because he had already considered it.

And he didn’t like the conclusion.

Claire Bennett had entered his life quietly.

She wasn’t connected to his business.

She wasn’t part of his social circle.

She wasn’t someone who wanted anything from him.

That alone made her unusual.

People always wanted something from Adrian Mercer.

Money.

Influence.

A favor.

A connection.

Claire wanted none of it.

She wanted Lily to smile.

That was all.

And maybe that was exactly why someone noticed her.

Adrian left the security room and walked upstairs.

He found Claire sitting beside Lily on the floor, helping her color.

The sight stopped him.

It was ordinary.

Simple.

A thing that should have been normal.

But in his house, normal had become rare.

Lily looked up.

“Daddy!””

Adrian entered.

“What are you drawing?””

She held up the paper.

A family.

Three people.

Adrian.

Lily.

Claire.

His chest tightened.

“That’s beautiful.””

Lily smiled.

“She helped me.””

Adrian looked at Claire.

“I see that.””

Claire noticed the drawing.

Her smile faded slightly.

“Lily, maybe you should draw your mom too.””

The little girl became quiet.

Adrian watched carefully.

But Lily didn’t cry.

She simply picked up another crayon.

“She’s in my heart.””

The words were simple.

But they hit harder than anything.

Adrian looked away.

Because some pain was too private to show.

Claire gently touched Lily’s shoulder.

“You know she would love this picture.””

Lily nodded.

“She liked pink.””

Claire smiled.

“She did?””

“Daddy says she picked everything pink.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“I did.””

A small smile appeared.

A real one.

For a moment, they were just a family.

Then Marcus appeared at the doorway.

Adrian saw his expression immediately.

The moment ended.

“What is it?””

Marcus looked at Lily and Claire.

“Can I speak with you?””

Adrian stepped into the hallway.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“We found the photographer.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

Adrian waited.

“The person who took the pictures wasn’t trying to hide from us.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means they wanted us to find them.””

Adrian stared.

Then Marcus handed him a photograph.

Adrian looked down.

The image showed his mansion.

The gate.

The snow.

And a clear view of Claire holding Lily.

His stomach turned.

Because the photograph wasn’t focused on him.

Not on his wealth.

Not on his security.

Not on his business.

It was focused on the one thing he couldn’t afford to lose.

His daughter.

And the woman who had become important to her.

Adrian slowly looked back toward the room.

Claire was laughing softly as Lily showed her another drawing.

A peaceful moment.

A fragile moment.

Someone had seen it.

Someone had captured it.

And someone wanted Adrian to know.

Marcus watched his employer’s expression change.

“Sir?””

Adrian folded the photograph.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Find out everything about Claire Bennett.””

Marcus nodded.

“And if there’s nothing?””

Adrian looked through the doorway again.

At Lily.

At Claire.

At the two people who had brought light back into a house built around grief.

“Then find out who wants her gone.””

May you like

And for the first time in years, Adrian Mercer wasn’t protecting a company.

He was protecting a family.
