Chapter 4: The Kingdom That Remembered

The crowd outside did not scream.

That was the strangest part.

Prince Adrian had expected chaos.

Anger.

Violence.

Instead, thousands of people stood beneath the gray morning sky in complete silence, staring through the open cathedral doors.

As if they had been waiting twenty years for someone to finally open them.

The first person to step forward was an old woman carrying a faded portrait.

Her hands shook as she lifted it toward Princess Elara.

The portrait showed a younger Queen Mara holding a baby wrapped in white cloth.

And beside them stood a symbol Adrian recognized.

The royal seal of Veyron.

The same seal on Elara’s birth record.

The old woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Princess…”

Her voice cracked.

“We thought we would never see you.””

Elara stood frozen.

She looked behind her at King Lucian.

Then at the crowd.

Then at the portrait.

She had spent her entire life believing she was invisible.

A princess nobody wanted to look at.

A daughter who needed to hide.

But now thousands of people were looking at her as if she was the one thing they had never forgotten.

“I don’t understand,” Elara whispered.

Queen Mara stepped beside her.

“They remembered.””

Elara turned.

“Remembered what?””

Mara looked at the crowd.

“The truth.””

King Lucian walked forward.

His guards immediately formed a line around him.

“You are all being manipulated.””

The crowd remained silent.

The king raised his voice.

“This woman is a criminal who abandoned her responsibilities.””

A man in the crowd stepped forward.

He was older, with a scar across his face.

Adrian noticed several nobles recognize him.

The man bowed his head slightly.

“My king.””

Lucian looked pleased.

“Finally. Someone with sense.””

The man lifted his eyes.

“My name is Tomas Vale.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

“Tomas…”

One of the nobles whispered.

Adrian looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Mara answered quietly.

“Captain of the royal guard twenty years ago.””

Adrian looked back.

The former captain continued.

“I was the man ordered to arrest Queen Mara on the night she disappeared.””

The cathedral became silent again.

King Lucian’s expression changed.

“Tomas.””

The warning in his voice was clear.

But the old soldier continued.

“I was told she had betrayed the kingdom.””

He looked at Mara.

“I believed it.””

Mara said nothing.

The man lowered his head.

“I was wrong.””

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

King Lucian stepped forward.

“You expect them to believe a disgraced soldier?””

Tomas looked at him.

“I expect them to believe the documents you failed to destroy.””

The king’s face tightened.

Adrian noticed.

Again.

That small flash of fear.

Tomas reached into his coat and pulled out a sealed envelope.

“I found this hidden beneath the old royal archives.””

King Lucian’s voice became sharp.

“Do not.””

But Tomas opened it.

Inside was a stack of papers.

“Orders signed by King Lucian before Queen Mara’s disappearance.””

The crowd became restless.

Adrian looked at Elara.

She was watching everything.

But she looked less like someone discovering a secret.

And more like someone finally finding missing pieces of a memory.

“What happened that night?”” Adrian asked.

Mara looked at him.

Her eyes carried twenty years of pain.

“The night Elara was born, the royal council discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Lucian was not the rightful successor.””

Adrian frowned.

“But he was the king’s brother.””

“Yes.””

Mara looked toward Lucian.

“His brother was supposed to inherit the throne.””

The king interrupted.

“Enough.””

But Mara continued.

“When the rightful heir died unexpectedly, Lucian claimed the crown.””

Adrian looked at the king.

“And nobody questioned it?””

“They did.””

Mara’s voice lowered.

“But then my daughter was born.””

Elara touched her cheek.

“The mark.””

Mara nodded.

“The old royal sign appeared.””

Adrian understood.

“Meaning she had the stronger claim.””

King Lucian’s expression became darker.

“A child cannot rule a kingdom.””

“No,” Mara replied.

“But a child can grow.””

The words struck harder than any accusation.

Because everyone understood.

He had not needed to defeat Elara.

Only hide her.

Only wait.

Only make sure nobody remembered.

The king looked toward the crowd.

“You are all forgetting one thing.””

His voice grew louder.

“A kingdom needs stability.””

The people stared.

“Not legends.””

He pointed toward Mara.

“Not ancient symbols.””

Then toward Elara.

“Not a frightened girl who has never ruled anything.””

Elara flinched.

Adrian saw it.

The old wound.

The one created by years of being told she was incapable.

But this time, she did not lower her head.

She stepped forward.

“I have never ruled because you never allowed me to.””

The king stared at her.

She continued.

“You told me I was dangerous.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“You told me people would fear me.””

Another step.

“You locked away my face because you were afraid they would recognize me.””

The crowd listened.

“You did not protect this kingdom from me.””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“You protected yourself from me.””

For the first time, King Lucian looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

The princess everyone thought was powerless had just spoken in front of an entire kingdom.

A guard suddenly rushed toward the king.

“Your Majesty.””

Lucian turned.

“What?””

The guard whispered.

Adrian could not hear the words.

But whatever he said drained the king’s face.

“Impossible.””

The guard nodded.

“The northern provinces have already declared support for Princess Elara.””

Another guard approached.

“The eastern cities have done the same.””

The king looked around.

His kingdom was changing in real time.

Not because of an army.

Not because of a battle.

Because people had finally heard a truth they had been denied.

King Lucian turned toward Adrian.

“This is your doing.””

Adrian frowned.

“My doing?””

“You opened the helmet.””

The king stepped closer.

“You think you saved her.””

His voice dropped.

“But you have started a war.””

Adrian held his gaze.

“If the truth starts a war, perhaps the lie should have never existed.””

The king smiled.

A cold, dangerous smile.

“You sound like your father.””

Adrian froze.

“What did you say?””

But Lucian was already turning away.

Mara noticed.

Her expression changed.

“Adrian.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The promise I mentioned…”

“What about it?””

Before she could answer, a messenger rushed through the crowd.

His face was pale.

He carried a small black envelope.

“Prince Adrian.””

Adrian took it.

The seal on the front made his blood run cold.

It was the royal seal of Aurelian.

His father’s kingdom.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only three sentences.

*Prince Adrian, return immediately.*

*Your marriage has failed.*

*Your father demands you bring Princess Elara back alive.*

Adrian read the words again.

Then again.

Because beneath the message was something else.

A second line.

Written by someone else.

Someone who had added it after the letter was sealed.

A warning.

A name.

May you like

And a truth that made his hands go cold.

*Your father knew about Elara before you ever met her.*
