Chapter 8: The King Who Never Wore the Crown
The name of the dead king remained in the air.
Not spoken.
Not repeated.
But everyone knew.
King Alistair Vey.
The ruler who was supposed to inherit the throne.
The man whose death had changed two kingdoms forever.
Prince Adrian stood motionless, staring at Queen Mara.
His entire life had been built around a single belief.
That he was the son of King Roland.
That his blood belonged to Aurelian.
That his future was connected to a kingdom he had been trained to serve.
Now, everything had been rewritten.
His name.
His family.
His purpose.
“I don’t understand.””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Mara stepped closer.
“You were born in Veyron.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I grew up in Aurelian.””
“Because Roland took you there.””
The words felt like another wound.
Adrian looked toward the man who raised him.
King Roland stood silently.
No denial.
No anger.
Only regret.
“Why?””
The question was directed at him.
“Why did you take me?””
Roland looked older than he had moments before.
“Because your father was dead.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“That does not answer my question.””
The king lowered his head.
“Because Lucian wanted you dead too.””
A cold silence followed.
Elara looked at him.
“He knew about Adrian?””
Mara nodded.
“Lucian knew there were two children who could challenge him.””
She looked at Adrian.
“And when Alistair died, you became the last remaining son of the royal bloodline.””
Adrian looked at Elara.
“Then why didn’t he kill me?””
Seraphine answered.
“Because Roland took you before he could.””
Everyone looked toward the former king of Aurelian.
Adrian’s expression remained unreadable.
“You saved me?””
Roland closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
A bitter laugh escaped Adrian.
“You want me to thank you?””
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
Roland looked directly at him.
“I do not deserve that.””
For the first time, Adrian saw something different in the man who raised him.
Not a king.
Not a ruler.
A father who had failed.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have protected your mother.””
“Yes.””
“I should have stopped Lucian.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“But you didn’t.””
Roland accepted it.
“No.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Because Adrian realized something terrible.
His father was not innocent.
But he was not the monster he had imagined either.
He was a man who made a choice.
And people died because of it.
Elara quietly stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both men looked at her.
She held the old birth record in her hand.
For years, she had dreamed of finding answers.
But now that she had them, they were heavier than she expected.
“We are fighting about who lied to us.””
Her eyes moved from Adrian to Roland.
“But the person who started all of this is still standing.””
Everyone looked toward Lucian.
The former king smiled.
“You sound exactly like your mother.””
Elara faced him.
“That is not an insult.””
The smile disappeared.
Lucian had spent twenty years controlling her.
Making her smaller.
Making her afraid.
But the girl he had hidden behind wood and iron was gone.
She stood before him now as the person he had feared.
The true heir.
“You lost,” Elara said.
The words were simple.
But they carried power.
Lucian looked around.
His kingdom was slipping away.
His secrets were exposed.
His allies were disappearing.
Yet he still looked calm.
“You believe that?””
Elara frowned.
Lucian walked toward the center of the cathedral.
“You think a crown belongs to whoever has the oldest blood?””
He looked at the people watching.
“Then what happens when that person is too young? Too inexperienced? Too weak?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Are you still trying to justify this?””
Lucian ignored him.
“I ruled for twenty years.””
His voice grew louder.
“I built roads. I defended borders. I kept enemies away.””
Mara’s expression hardened.
“By stealing a throne.””
Lucian looked at her.
“By doing what was necessary.””
The old argument.
Power versus truth.
Adrian had heard it his entire life in different forms.
But now he saw the danger.
People like Lucian did not believe they were villains.
They believed they were the only ones capable of making decisions.
The cathedral doors suddenly opened.
A group of nobles entered.
At their front was Lord Cedric, one of Veyron’s oldest council members.
He bowed toward Elara.
“Princess.””
Elara looked surprised.
“You served my father?””
The old man nodded.
“I served King Alistair.””
His eyes moved toward Lucian.
“And I failed him.””
Lucian’s expression changed.
“Cedric.””
The old council member ignored him.
“We found the final archive.””
Mara stepped forward.
“What archive?””
“The king’s private records.””
Adrian frowned.
“I thought they were destroyed.””
“They were almost destroyed.””
Cedric looked toward Seraphine.
“Your mother saved some.””
Seraphine nodded.
Cedric held a sealed book.
Inside was the royal journal of King Alistair.
The last days before his death.
Elara looked at it carefully.
“What does it say?””
Cedric hesitated.
Then he opened the book.
“The king wrote that he discovered a conspiracy.””
Everyone became silent.
“A conspiracy involving members of both royal courts.””
Adrian looked at Roland.
His father’s face changed.
Cedric continued.
“King Alistair believed someone close to him planned to remove him before he could announce his children’s existence.””
Elara whispered:
“Someone close.””
The council member nodded.
“He wrote one name.””
The cathedral held its breath.
Cedric turned the page.
Adrian expected Lucian.
He expected Roland.
But the name was different.
A name nobody had said before.
A name that made Queen Mara cover her mouth.
Because it belonged to someone she trusted.
Someone she loved.
Someone whose betrayal had never been suspected.
Cedric looked up.
“The person who betrayed King Alistair was…”
A crash interrupted him.
A window shattered.
Everyone turned.
A shadow moved across the cathedral wall.
A sharp object flew through the air.
Adrian reacted instantly.
He grabbed Elara and pulled her down.
The object struck the wooden floor.
An arrow.
Another message.
Seraphine picked it up.
Her face changed.
“What is it?””
Adrian asked.
She unfolded the paper.
Only three words were written.
*ASK YOUR MOTHER.*
Everyone looked at Queen Mara.
She stood completely still.
Because she knew.
Adrian saw it.
The fear.
Not fear of Lucian.
Not fear of losing power.
Fear of a truth she had carried alone.
“Elara,” Mara whispered.
Her voice trembled.
“There is something I never told you.””
Elara stared at her.
“What?””
Mara looked at Adrian.
Then at her daughter.
“The man who betrayed your father…”
She swallowed.
“He was not a stranger.””
The cathedral became silent.
“He was someone in this room.””
Every face turned.
May you like
And then Mara spoke the name that broke the last remaining piece of the old royal family.
“It was your grandfather.””
