Chapter 9: The Last Truth Before the Crown

The name did not belong to a stranger.

That was what made it hurt.

Everyone in the cathedral understood who Queen Mara meant.

King Edmund.

The old king of Veyron.

The man whose portrait still hung in royal halls.

The man remembered as a wise ruler who protected his kingdom through difficult years.

The man who was supposed to be a grandfather.

Elara stood completely still.

“My grandfather?””

Mara nodded slowly.

The word sounded impossible.

“He betrayed his own son?””

Queen Mara looked down.

“Yes.””

The cathedral fell into a painful silence.

Even King Lucian no longer looked pleased.

Because the truth had become larger than his own crimes.

Adrian watched Elara carefully.

He knew that expression.

The same expression he had worn when he discovered King Roland was not the father he believed him to be.

The feeling of having your memories taken away.

Of looking back at every happy moment and wondering whether it was real.

“Why?”” Elara asked.

Her voice was quiet.

Not angry.

Not yet.

“Why would he do that?””

Mara closed her eyes.

“Because he believed the crown mattered more than his family.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“He believed Alistair was too gentle to rule.””

Adrian frowned.

“Your own father tried to remove you?””

Mara looked at him.

“No.””

She looked toward Elara.

“He tried to remove his son.””

The words were painful.

“Alistair discovered that his father planned to change the line of succession.””

Elara held the birth record tighter.

“Because of me?””

“Because of both of you.””

Mara looked at Adrian.

“King Edmund believed the kingdoms could not survive under two young heirs.””

“So he chose Lucian?””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked toward the former king.

Lucian’s face remained cold.

But something in his eyes had changed.

A memory.

A truth he had carried too.

Mara continued.

“Edmund offered Lucian the throne.””

Everyone stared.

“Lucian was promised power if he removed Alistair and erased the children.””

Adrian looked at Lucian.

“And you agreed.””

Lucian did not answer.

He did not need to.

His silence was enough.

Elara stepped forward.

“And my mother?””

Mara looked at her.

“Your grandfather wanted you hidden.””

Her voice broke.

“But he did not want you dead.””

Elara frowned.

“Then why did everyone believe I disappeared?””

“Because Lucian went further than Edmund planned.””

The cathedral became colder.

Mara looked toward Lucian.

“He stopped caring about promises.””

Lucian finally spoke.

“You act like I was the only one who made choices.””

His voice carried through the room.

“Everyone here made choices.””

He looked at Roland.

“Your father chose ambition.””

He looked at Mara.

“You chose rebellion.””

Then he looked at Adrian and Elara.

“And now you both choose revenge.””

Elara stared at him.

“This is not revenge.””

Lucian smiled.

“Then what is it?””

She looked around.

At the people.

At the families.

At the lives destroyed by powerful people protecting themselves.

“It is ending this.””

For the first time, Lucian looked uncertain.

Because she did not sound like someone seeking a crown.

She sounded like someone seeking peace.

A messenger suddenly entered the cathedral.

His face was pale.

“Princess.””

Everyone turned.

“What happened?””

The messenger bowed.

“The city guards have arrested the remaining officials who supported King Lucian.””

A wave of relief moved through the crowd.

But the messenger was not finished.

“There is another issue.””

Elara looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The people are demanding an immediate coronation.””

The room erupted.

Adrian looked at Elara.

She looked overwhelmed.

“No.””

Everyone became quiet.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Mara stepped closer.

“Elara.””

“I cannot become queen because people are angry.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I spent my entire life being controlled by people who told me what I had to be.””

She looked toward the crown resting near the altar.

“I will not take another crown because people tell me I must.””

Adrian watched her.

And he understood.

The helmet had not only hidden her face.

It had stolen her choices.

Now she was finally taking them back.

Lord Cedric stepped forward.

“Princess, then what do you want?””

Elara looked at the crowd.

At the people waiting.

At the kingdoms watching.

“I want the truth recorded.””

The nobles looked surprised.

“Before any crown.””

She continued.

“I want every document from this day preserved.””

Her eyes moved toward Lucian.

“I want every person who suffered because of this conspiracy named.””

Then toward Roland.

“Even those who helped.””

King Roland lowered his head.

He did not protest.

Elara turned toward Adrian.

“And I want him beside me.””

Adrian looked surprised.

“Me?””

“You are the other heir.””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know if I deserve that.””

Elara looked at him.

“Neither do I.””

A small silence followed.

Then she continued.

“But maybe that is why we can do better.””

For the first time in years, Adrian felt something that was not anger.

Not confusion.

Hope.

But before anyone could answer, a sudden commotion came from the back of the cathedral.

A guard entered.

“Princess.””

His face was serious.

“We found someone.””

Elara looked confused.

“Who?””

The guard stepped aside.

An old man was brought inside.

He was weak.

His clothes were torn.

But Adrian recognized him.

So did Mara.

Queen Mara went pale.

“No.””

The old man looked toward her.

“Mara.””

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Father.””

The entire cathedral froze.

King Edmund.

The man everyone believed had been dead for years.

The man whose betrayal had destroyed the royal family.

He was alive.

The guards pushed him forward.

Elara stared.

“You survived.””

Edmund looked at his granddaughter.

His eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The old king looked down.

“Because I deserved to live long enough to confess.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You knew everything.””

Edmund nodded.

“Yes.””

“You allowed Lucian to take the throne.””

“Yes.””

“You allowed my parents to die.””

The old man closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost unbearable.

Elara’s voice shook.

“Why?””

Edmund looked at her.

“Because I was afraid.””

She stared.

“Afraid of what?””

He whispered:

“Of losing everything.””

A long pause.

Then he added:

“And because Lucian was not the person I feared most.””

Everyone became still.

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Edmund looked toward the shattered cathedral windows.

Toward the kingdom beyond.

Then back at them.

“The conspiracy did not begin with Lucian.””

Mara stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

Edmund’s eyes filled with fear.

“I was only one piece.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Then who started it?””

Edmund looked at the royal seal on the altar.

“The person who wanted both kingdoms under one ruler.””

A silence.

Then:

“The person who has been guiding events from the beginning.””

Elara looked around.

“Who?””

Edmund opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, an arrow flew through the cathedral.

This time, it struck the old king.

Gasps filled the room.

Adrian caught him before he fell.

Blood stained the old man’s clothing.

“Who fired that?”” someone shouted.

Guards rushed outside.

But Edmund grabbed Adrian’s arm.

His strength was fading.

“Listen…”

Adrian leaned closer.

The old king whispered a final name.

A name that made Adrian’s entire body freeze.

Because it was not a king.

Not a queen.

Not a noble.

It was someone they had trusted.

Someone who had stood beside them through every secret.

Edmund’s final words were barely audible.

“The person behind everything…”

He looked at Elara.

“…is the one who helped you open the helmet.””

Adrian turned slowly.

Everyone followed his gaze.

May you like

And standing near the altar, holding the royal documents, was the person nobody had suspected.

Queen Mara.
