Chapter 5: The Prince’s Hidden Bloodline

The message from Aurelian felt heavier than the paper it was written on.

Prince Adrian stood beneath the broken cathedral doors, surrounded by thousands of people who had just witnessed the fall of one king’s greatest secret.

But all he could see was the final sentence.

*Your father knew about Elara before you ever met her.*

The words repeated inside his mind.

His father.

King Roland of Aurelian.

The man who had taught him that honesty was the foundation of leadership.

The man who had sent him to Veyron to create peace.

The man who had looked him in the eyes and said:

“Marry Princess Elara. Our kingdoms need this alliance.””

But now Adrian wondered.

Was it really an alliance?

Or had he simply been another piece moved across a board?

“Adrian?””

Elara’s voice pulled him back.

He looked up.

She was watching him carefully.

Not like a princess.

Like someone who understood what it felt like to discover that the people closest to you had been lying for years.

“What did the letter say?”” she asked.

Adrian folded it slowly.

“My father wants me to return to Aurelian.””

Elara looked at the paper.

“And me?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered before his words did.

Her expression changed.

“He wants me to come with you.””

Adrian looked away.

“He wants you alive.””

The crowd around them became silent.

Everyone understood what those words meant.

Alive.

Not safe.

Not protected.

Alive.

As if she were something valuable to be captured.

Queen Mara stepped closer.

“You cannot go back.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You think my father will hurt her?””

Mara’s expression was painful.

“I think your father has known about her existence since the day she was born.””

Adrian tightened his jaw.

“And you know this because?””

“Because Lucian did not act alone.””

The answer settled over them.

Adrian looked toward King Lucian.

The former king stood surrounded by guards, but he no longer looked powerful.

He looked cornered.

“What are you saying?””

Mara lowered her voice.

“Your father helped him erase Elara.””

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Too quickly.

Mara studied him.

“You want to believe that.””

Adrian said nothing.

Because she was right.

A part of him refused to accept it.

His father had been his hero.

His example.

The person who taught him that crowns meant responsibility.

Not control.

Mara continued.

“Twenty years ago, when Lucian needed someone outside Veyron to recognize his claim, your father was the first ruler to support him.””

“Why?””

Mara looked at Elara.

“Because Lucian promised him something.””

Adrian looked at the king.

“What?””

Mara answered quietly.

“The throne of Veyron.””

A cold silence followed.

Adrian understood.

Two kingdoms.

Two rulers.

One secret.

The marriage between him and Elara suddenly looked very different.

Not a peace agreement.

A chain.

A way to connect two powerful families while keeping the real heir hidden.

Elara stepped closer.

“Why me?””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

“Why would your father care about me?””

Her voice became smaller.

“Why would two kings spend twenty years trying to hide one girl?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Tomas, the former captain, spoke.

“Because you are not just the heir of Veyron.””

Everyone turned.

Tomas looked at Adrian.

“You are also connected to Aurelian.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Tomas glanced at Mara.

She nodded.

“Your mother.””

Adrian froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“What does my mother have to do with this?””

Mara took a slow breath.

“Your mother was from Veyron.””

The world seemed to tilt.

Adrian stared.

“That is impossible.””

“No.””

Mara shook her head.

“It is simply another truth you were never told.””

Adrian stepped back.

His entire life suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“My mother was from Aurelian.””

“That is what your father told you.””

The words hurt because they sounded exactly like something Lucian had done.

A simple sentence.

A complete replacement for reality.

Adrian looked at the king.

King Lucian said nothing.

And that silence confirmed everything.

Elara looked at him.

“You didn’t know.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

For the first time since they met, she reached for him.

Not as a princess.

Not as a political partner.

As someone who understood.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words almost broke him.

Because she was the one person in the room who had the least reason to comfort him.

She had lost her identity.

Her mother.

Her childhood.

And still she was worried about him.

A sudden shout interrupted them.

“Your Majesty!””

Everyone turned.

A soldier ran toward King Lucian.

His armor was covered in dust.

“There are forces approaching from the west.””

Lucian looked relieved.

Finally.

A way out.

“Whose forces?””

The soldier hesitated.

Adrian noticed.

“What?””

The soldier lowered his head.

“King Roland of Aurelian.””

The crowd erupted.

Adrian went still.

His father had not waited for him to return.

He had come himself.

Mara’s face became serious.

“He came quickly.””

Too quickly.

Adrian looked toward the cathedral entrance.

Outside, banners appeared through the fog.

The golden eagle of Aurelian.

His father’s army.

His father’s symbol.

The people around Adrian began moving away.

Not because they hated him.

Because they did not know what he was.

A prince.

An enemy.

Or another victim.

The cathedral doors opened.

And King Roland entered.

He was older than Adrian remembered from the last time they spoke, but he still carried himself with absolute confidence.

A king who believed every room belonged to him.

His eyes immediately found Adrian.

Then Elara.

Then Queen Mara.

For a moment, his face revealed something unexpected.

Fear.

Only a flicker.

Then it disappeared.

“My son.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You knew.””

The words came before any greeting.

King Roland stopped.

The entire cathedral watched.

“Knew what?””

“That Elara was the true heir.””

Silence.

Roland looked around.

At the crowd.

At Mara.

At Lucian.

Then back at his son.

“Who told you this?””

Adrian laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the question itself was an answer.

“You didn’t deny it.””

Roland’s expression hardened.

“Adrian, you do not understand the situation.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His father stepped closer.

“You understand what they want you to understand.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Did you know?””

The king remained silent.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Elara stood beside Adrian.

Watching.

Waiting.

Finally, King Roland spoke.

“Yes.””

The word fell like a stone.

The crowd reacted.

Adrian did not move.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You sent me here anyway.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

King Roland looked toward Elara.

And his answer was not what anyone expected.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Elara’s eyes narrowed.

“Protect him?””

Roland looked at her.

“No.””

He took a breath.

“Protect both of you.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The king looked toward Queen Mara.

Then toward King Lucian.

“You think the secret is that Elara is the rightful heir.””

Nobody spoke.

“But that is only half the truth.””

A chill moved through the cathedral.

Roland continued.

“The reason Lucian feared Elara was not because she could take his throne.””

He looked at Adrian.

“It was because if the world learned who Elara truly was…”

His voice lowered.

“…they would also learn who you truly are.””

Adrian felt the room disappear.

“What are you saying?””

King Roland looked at him with a sadness Adrian had never seen before.

Then he spoke the words that changed everything.

“Adrian…”

“You and Elara were never supposed to marry.””

A pause.

“You were supposed to find each other.””

Nobody breathed.

“Because you are not strangers.””

May you like

Roland looked at the two young royals.

“You are brother and sister.””
